Bicycling 1:40:00 [2]
To Winchester and back in the rain for Isabel's soccer game. They lost. She made some nice plays. She can win duels with a flair.

Walking 40:00 [1]
Walked with David to school. It's walk-to-school day, officially. I offered to carry his backpack, which weights 18 pounds and hits me right behind my kidneys. Ouch. We kind of had a fight on the way because he was complaining about how there was nothing good about walking to school. He was cold. One of the things we fought about was whether he'd wear my really warm down gloves. My hands were warm, his were cold, and the gloves are excellent. But he thought that they'd look funny. They're not even pink or anything, just tan and black. Eventually after I had a fit he wore them. I guess wearing them was less embarrassing than walking with me as I had a fit. After that he cheered up and was a lot less cold. I don't remember how we got into it, but he was wondering how people figure out how to make medicine. So I gave him a short version of target-based drug development and then he asked what role I play in that, so I described that as well.

Yesterday morning we got up super early to go to the school grounds and finish his tree identification project. There has been a lot of homework and homework involvement by me this week. Yesterday evening he actually had finished (or so he claimed) his homework, so we played a few games of Khet, a really cool game with lasers and mirrors. He beat me most of the time and laughed at how I'm clueless about Khet the way that he's clueless about his homework - our roles are reversed. Then he said he was surprised I couldn't draw well (I'd told his art teacher yesterday morning I couldn't draw nearly as well as he could) and I said, I can draw just fine, and we ended up having a drawing contest complete with a bunch of trash talk about how we were each better than the other person, until we'd gotten a ways into the actual drawing and then it devolved into each of us saying how the other person's drawing was so good and way better than our own. Maybe I'll post the drawings at some point and you can decide who won.
Running 5:00 [2]
When we got to school (a) there was a fire drill going on and (b) Dave was just dropping off Isabel, Amisi and Fidel. I guess they missed the bus. So I got a ride back with Dave instead of running as planned, but at least I ran from where he dropped me to Dunkin Donuts.

I've decided the time is not ripe for a diet yet. Going to try actually exercising first.

Note
Lego robot club watched a short promo video about the whole lego robot enterprise, which was founded by Ka_an (inventor of Segway). It was slightly inappropriate in that it seemed more of a sell to parents ("these kids will go on to amazing creative inventions that advance mankind and make a lot of money" or whatever) - at one point Ka_an was saying a lot of these kids, by the time they're 10 or 12, have the idea they're going to be in the NBA or go to Hollywood, and those are the only options they know. There was a pause as the kids on our team exchanged with really puzzled looks. Then one of them turned to the screen and asked him, "WHAT are you TALKing about?"

So, anyway, that was pretty funny.

...

The kids found a really big praying mantis outside the other day. Dave had just the thing to put it in (a big empty aquarium), and they set up a little ecosystem for it. The mantis is 4 inches long or so, and really just terrifying. In the spirit of Halloween, I will post photos of it devouring some prey, but any other time of year the pictures would be too gory.

Note
Excellent movie. Named something like Placid Lake. Australian? New Zealand? (Sorry. I'm sure that's a rude confusion to make.) Recommended.

Isabel went to her second synchronized swimming lesson today. She missed a couple due to traveling and scheduling snafu. It turns out there is a good program all the way through high school, very well-coached and supportive - more "serious" than "competitive". Having said that, the older girls have made it to national competitions twice! I like those off-beat sports where you have a chance of making it to national competitions... :-)
