Teaching 15:00 [3]

Talked with the kids - heard some of their feedback - thanked them - told them I want to start a team that would compete at the Interscholastics Champs, and laid out my vision for orienteering in Cambridge.

They gave me a nice picture of birds, and thank-you notes made in the shape of my Cat in the Hat orienteering hat!

"I admit I had fun at the Fells. I didn't think I would like it so much."

Let's see, other comments from this morning:
I saw a frog.
I liked being in the wild; I've read a lot of books about big cats in the wild so it was fun to actually go there.
I liked being timed when we raced.
I liked putting together the puzzle.
We were lost but then I heard my friend's voice. [--> Discussion about using all your senses in orienteering.]
I stepped in a rotting log and there were lots of insects.
I saw daddy long legs and I either ran away or stepped on them. [Commentary from me about all the creatures on the earth...]
There was lots of screaming.
A kid and a teacher had a different idea about where to go, and the kid was right but the teacher had them go her way. Discussion about how to share evidence and reach consensus on the right way to go.

Teaching 4:00:00 [1]

Field trip to the Fells. Set out controls starting around 8:30 with Geoff Pingree. Barbara Martin from NEOC volunteered to help and was great with her group of kids. Slowed them down, made sure they knew what they were doing.
We did a classic team mission, using the same course and maps that I use for the 5th grade at Morse, ending at a high point for lunch with a puzzle (from the team controls) that leads to a treasure (edible).
