Note

The main activity at Nav Games today was preparing lesson plans for Thursday and Friday. After considering how last week went, they decided to really focus on fun activities, such as obstacle course - and then connect them to orienteering in discussion afterward. (As opposed to forcing strictly orienteering activities.)
8 PM

Teaching 1:30:00 [3]

Conversation over dinner with Ed, Alex, 4 teens from the program, my friend Liz, Marina, Ethan. Topic: how to start an interscholastic high school league in the Boston area.

Some good ideas and questions from Ed and Alex both.

It seems that the next steps include laying out how a school team would prepare, probably with the following seasons: indoor training, outdoor training, competitions, and championship.

Liz made the point that culturally, many urban kids do not see the woods as a wonderful, safe place to be. We tend to assume that attitude, because it is ours. We should not be blithe about that when thinking about how to get more kids to orienteer.

We will interview Bog Forgrave today and our Newton Country Day School contact tomorrow.

While everything is going well, I am struggling a little. I can't have both time and money at the same time, and it feels like I need both to keep this effort alive. And there are so many unknowns. Bringing in more people is great, but then I lose track of what was working well for me, and my own train of thought. I want to build on the opportunities that I already have made, and definitely have - but many of the ideas go in a different direction. How to stay steady, find people to staff current opportunities, and then make a concerted effort on some new projects?

Note

Went to massage therapist this morning. It was great, but the back still hurts.

Met with Liz & the teen team interested in building a school league in Boston. We made a list of people to talk to about the idea, including Alex and Erin, as well as a sympathetic XC coach and our contact at Newton Country Day School.

The main activity for today (for which I was not present) was Ed Despard teaching course setting. The teens set courses and then went and tested them out. @ Danehy.

Note

My lower back hurts a lot. It hurt yesterday, and I ran anyway. It still hurts and vitamin I isn't helping.

Ethan took the teens to the Blue Hills where they did a regular and score-O course.

Time is approximate. 5k race with O shortcuts: Forest X. Great format. Thanks, Alex & Ed!

Note

I think you run around the circle and when the leader calls "STOP" then you orient the map and point to where you are.

Gardening 2:00:00 [1]

Gave it a 1 instead of 0 because it was hot.

Dealt with the fly traps, cleaned the chicken coop, pulled bolted lettuce (gave to chickens); planted new seeds; gave plant food to the lower garden. The bean plants will blossom this week, and so we should have beans the following week. We are starting to get Sun Gold cherries and a couple small plum tomatoes; we are a couple weeks away from ripe large tomatoes. The peppers are big (Carmens) but not yet reddening. Herbs doing well.

Going through my head the whole way: "JOEY HADORN!!!"

Note

We are planning to start a Navigation Games newsletter. If you'd like to receive it, sign up here. I'd appreciate it very much. We'll have news and information about our programs (teaching, coaching, games, resources, funding travel, training, interscholastic teams, opportunities to volunteer).
Thanks

Note

Today the teens taught three classe and worked on projects. The projects are laying the groundwork for an Interscholastic league in the Boston area, a couple of videos, kits for schools, and making maps.
