Note

It's nice having Dave home. And Isabel too - she just arrived last night. Mind you, she is not home this very minute; she is hanging with a friend.

Had a short but good conv with Erin and Dave today.
Always inspiring.

Andrea sent me a description of the orienteering teaching she has been doing this summer. Super cool.

Am talking with Ethan about the possibility of him staying on in the fall.

Summary of Navigation Games money to date:

$5800 raised and spent on athlete travel & competition this year (3 events).
$8100 income since inception last year in grants and program fees; all spent on supplies, equipment, teachers, etc.

So we're running at about $0 balance, but that's so much better than many 1000s in the hole!

Most of the teaching, including all of my time, is volunteer. I do expect to always have lots of volunteers - but with more paid staff than we currently have. Dave and I are providing room and board for Marina and Ethan without reimbursement; also not super sustainable once I stop getting my current salary.

However, I'm really happy that we've brought in so much, and are roughly breaking even so far. And of course, the main point is that we have touched so many kids' lives. [AND WON JV IS CHAMPS, AND CAME IN 2ND FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL IS CHAMPS, tee hee]

Not included in that accounting is around $15,000 worth of programming this summer; that money went from the city directly to the kids for the most part.
Also not included was a grant from NEOC to City of Cambridge to pay for after school orienteering teachers.

Note

Yesterday's woods training went well. It was designed by Ethan, and challenged all the kid regardless of their level (which ranges from white to green). There was a regular course, orange level, and line-O, and relocation exercise.

Today they will work on projects, do a poker-O in Cambridgeport, and then prepare the final presentation to be given next Monday night at an event showcasing the work done by all nearly 1000 teens this summer in the Mayor's Program.
