Note

Spending all day today and tomorrow teaching 66 9th grade girls orienteering. Skills today, forest mission tomorrow.

Actually, today we are ALSO coaching a middle school team, and heading to CSU's park orienteering race.

Had a skype call this morning with Marie and Tomas, orienteers from the Czech Republic who will arrive next Tuesday evening to replace Juan and Pavla.

It was hot and muggy.

I am exhausted.

Orienteering 30:00 [1]

A full day of teaching orienteering. Woke at 5 to finish prep; left house at 8; set up, taught from 9 to 2:30 with Ethan, Pavla and David. Then we went to Edmands Park with the 66 girls for a white course and some more direction finding exercises. Tomorrow, the Fells.
Then we went to VLUS to coach that group of kids for the first time. Small group, but great.
Meanwhile, Ethan taught two K-5 classes.
Then we met up at CSU park-O.

Updated press release

Also, here is our Airbnb owner's review of our group: “Barbara's group was great! they were all friendly, considerate and neat. Would welcome them back anytime.”

Note

Yesterday Ethan, Pavla and I went to try and recruit kids for the VLUS after-school team. It was a little disappointing to only get 4 kids, and be ignored and told no by so many. Anyway, you gotta try. By just being present, and showing up, eventually things get rolling.

Today I got a message from the Vice Principal. She asked whether we could do a program with all 100 6th graders on May 24th at Danehy. We get them for at least 2 hours, maybe more.

Note

CRLS won Junior Nationals! Gold - Bronze - Gold.

I was thinking it might be useful/interesting to publish the story of how the team trained, including the exercises and training schedule. The team split once CRLS's spring season started, into those training officially through the school with Ethan, and those training with Navigation Games. Plus, Vilppu and Keegan are on the JDT, getting weekly emails and having monthly phone calls with Greg Ahlswede.

Draft press release - hoping to generate interest to grow participation locally.
