I read Educated: A Memoir, for book group.
Mostly I was struck by how hard it was to extricate herself.
From the outside of a family or relationship, particularly from a stranger's written story, it is so easy to see 'clearly' that it's a bad thing and you need to leave.
I also listened on the radio to an author talking about a book she wrote about her ex-husband who was an addict and died of an infection caused by using intravenous needles. Her teenage kids were still spending time at his house and there were lots of signs, but nobody really caught what was happening until he died. He wielded power over the family financially and, I guess, emotionally.
