Help. Winning time in sprint of 12-15 min at JWOC for men and women: how do I figure out how long the course should be? Do I calculate based on crow flies but going around buildings? How do I translate minutes to km?

Orienteering 20:00 [1]

Hanging controls for virtual O.
Here is a screen shot from today's program, delivered interactively by Google Meet.
Ethan was the runner. The kids had a planning session and then talked to him to tell him where to go. Ethan did not have a map, and he was muted the whole time. Keegan followed him with a camera. The kids really loved that. I learned some things; for example, I always assume the students can just read the map. By slowing down, and having students plan in pairs, we were able to have every student engaged.

Orienteering 30:00 [1]

A couple of outings, first to hang controls then to retrieve them. Very excited to have done our first program in months. It was Google Meet orienteering, in which two classes of fifth graders provided instructions to Ethan, who was out in the world without a map. We have our second session Tuesday.

What do people recommend for nearby sprint maps? I'm working on the JWOC training week for the junior team members here. Thanks!

My "retirement" project is to formalize Henry Street Farms and create a kids-grow-food project. 147 kids have signed up; at least 136 of them have gotten seedlings, and many are recording growth data.

I hurt my toe/foot a couple weeks ago in a stumble down the stairs. It's still bothering me but I think slowly getting better. For a while I kept reinjuring it, but I'm trying to be more careful.

Navigation Games workers are partially furloughed until we can get more programs going. We are meeting several hours a week on outreach, lesson plan publication and planning. We have an actual program on Monday and Tuesday: a virtual orienteering trip. The Morse fifth grade classes will guide Ethan around Cambridge; they'll have a map but he won't. How many controls will he find in 90 minutes? Can't wait to see how it goes! The two classes will alternate between planning and telling him where to go.
