Orienteering 4:00:00 [1]

4 hour program for 10 9-year-old kids at Brookline Rec nature camp, with Ethan. I made the map! We had a progression of activities starting with Animal-O and leading up to a score-O on the whole park map. We have two more sessions in August, but with slightly older kids who will be able to go round the park on their own.
Full activity list:

  1. Intros: superhero name
  2. Boundary run. We got this from Erin; gets the kids running, and shows the boundary of the animal-O
  3. Animal-O. First use of SI cards
  4. Name Card Hunt. Practice looking for things and giving other kids directions - leading up to a map as being a way of telling people where to go.
  5. Object Maps. Focus on relationships of objects and orienting the map
  6. Geometric Animal-O. SI again; map-reading, orienting the map
  7. Baseball-O
  8. Garden-O - we skipped this one because of time
  9. Score-O on full map

They loved the beeping. EasyGec makes it so easy for us. The kids quickly learn how to download and clear, and we can focus on teaching.
They had learned about compasses the previous day, and liked learning that they could figure out which way is north just from orienting the map. No compass.
