Note
A good day. We got the contract to complete the 3-week orienteering units at all 12 Cambridge elementary schools, for grades JK, K, 1, 2 and 3.
Monday we worked with Needham PE teacher on a grant to work with them for 5 weeks in May, fingers crossed. They'll be purchasing SPORTIdent. I think we're responsible now for at least 4 SPORTIdent sets purchased by schools.
Walking 50:00 [1]
Drove to the Cape in the morning; got in a walk mid-day and late afternoon.
Ethan, Charlotte and I taught the third of four classes in our orienteering workshop (part of the international Association for Experiential Education conference). This time we did an information dump on a bunch of games and activities.
Ethan and I met with Phil, the PE teacher at Morse school. I am sad that Lukas will not be there for the orienteering unit. We had advocated for working with Morse in the fall, and for me, putting Morse first was just to get to Lukas if possible before he left. But that did not work out; bureaucratic delays. In the end it works out well because Peter Zakrevski is interning with us right now and he'll be able to walk there (it's just a couple blocks) to do the programs. Ethan was great in the meeting, addressing a lot of logistics and summarizing how the unit has changed from last year, both in terms of content and logistics (3 weeks instead of 2; JK through 3rd grade instead of just 3rd grade; remote in addition to in-person). He talked about how we're working toward having the teachers be able to deliver the content independently of us at some point.
Ethan and Charlotte have been teaching at the MLK school; this was their second week.
We have been having good discussions including NEOC and sometimes CSU about working with town recreation departments. Today I need to get back to Hingham to continue our conversation about mapping their parks and putting on events and training their summer camp staff to deliver orienteering programming.
We applied for a grant to work with Elevate Youth, who create meaningful outdoor experiences for underprivileged kids. Next week we're doing some programming with kids in the Dorchester Boys & Girls club.
