Veldhuizen, 6.0km. Again my ankle didn't want to cooperate. A few times I hurted it by putting pressure in the wrong way, and now it's a bit swollen again. No orienteering for some time to let it heal properly, because it's a shame to waste time like this. Also going to try some new exercises to make my foot/ankle stronger.
Splits
The race itself was a lot of fun. I came through pretty clean, but still had some annoying mistakes. Especially the end (with only contours) was unsatisfying because of the many mistakes. I had a pretty good speed in the forest though, which surprised me.
1) Easy first control.
2) Hesitated a bit in the last part, but couldn't really help it as the forest was more dense west of the ditch than shown on the map. 10".
3) Good compass work. Easy.
4) Map was off in the final part of the leg, but I was confident that I was going in the right direction. Again some hesitation in the very last part, but saw the control from a distance. Some 20" lost.
5) No pacecounting, which made me very insecure and looking around trying to spot the control. Spotted it eventually a bit further than I expected. 30".
6) Decided to cut through the forest, but the forest was more dense also here. This made me drift off route a bit, but I corrected well. Should haven taken the trail, now I lost around 40".
7) For training purposes I decided to go straight here too. Not smart, but enjoyable anyway. Frustrating to get stuck in some 'jungle' very close to the control. Again the map didn't show that, so I had to turn around and choose a different route. 1'20" lost.
8) Good speed on the road.
9) Took the trail around as I expected it to come back into the 'window'. Good guess :) Annoyingly I still made a mistake by sticking to the trail too long. 20".
10) Started running straight, but then saw the trail around. Bad route in the end which had the worst of both options combined. 30" lost.
11) I knew this was going to be a hard leg, so I focused well on keeping direction. that worked alright, until I caught up with someone and started doubting. Drifted to the road and relocated from there. Punched the control right after the one I caught up. 30" lost.
12) Easy.
13) Simplified well.
14) Didn't read the map at all, just focused on moving fast. This resulted in lots of hesitation already halfway. 20" lost.
15) Should've learned from my mistake at 14, but instead I did exactly the same thing... 20" lost.
16) Left the control in completely the wrong direction, no idea why. Didn't check compass and only when I started checking I corrected myself. 40" lost.
Good focus in general throughout the course, but really annoying to lose time in places where I shouldn't have. Also I wasn't that agressive today as I could have, probably holding back a bit because of the ankle.
