A much better race today. Maybe not mistake wise, but feeling was better and that's what counts for me. Legs were tired, so warm up was slow. Kept the pace a bit down on purpose, because the course was quite long.

1) Compass straight out of the start. Bit insecure in the end. +5".

2-3) Ok.

4) Slightly off, relocated fast. +10".

5-8) Ok.

9) Bit slow and hesitating. +5".

10) Good execution.

11) Ok.

12) Going well, having a good attackpoint, until I spotted a control out of the corner of my eye. Ran to it, punched it and then saw the codes didn't match. Relocated fairly quick. +40".

13) Drifted a bit off course in the first part, wanted to follow the western narrow ride after crossing the two trails.

14) Good compass bearing, but started following the wrong line of tree roots, even though I knew they were leading slightly in the wrong direction. Fast relocation though. +20".

15) Ok.

16) Wanted to hit the trail west of 15, so got confused when compass and trail didn't match up. +20".

17) A bit around on purpose. Maybe not the fastest, but quite safe.

18) Ran off without good bearing and plan. Hoped to get lucky but halfway I started hesitating and had to relocate. +50".

19) Again sloppy. Didn't notice I had drifted and relocated very late. +15".

20) Kept a good bearing, but again I started doubting and missed the control. Course planner Peter told me he thought going to the trail south of 20 might've been the fastest. +30".

21) Route choice a bit chaotic. Wanted to follow the small trail in the open area, but the extra meters of climb made it just as slow or slower as the heather. +15".

22-25) Good. Executing my choices well. Suffering a bit physically.

26) Sloppy in the circle, didn't have a clear picture of where the control should be exactly, hoped to see it in the final part. +5".

27) Bit straighter would've been nice. +5".

28-29) Ok.

30) Exiting 29 my compass told me something different than my feeling and that doesn't happen often, so was a bit confused. Following the trails a bit too much instead of cutting the corners. +15".

31) Trail route on purpose, so I could run fast and also check the heather to decide the route choice to 32.

32) Trail looked much faster, splits prove that.

33) Careful to not waste unnecessary seconds.

34) Came out onto the open and spotted a control, took me a bit to realise it wasn't mine. +10".

Splits
Map part 1 & 2

Terrain and course setting were great, the atmosphere in the arena as well. Too bad I couldn't enjoy my race as much as I wanted to. Was annoyed by my sloppiness, the steep hills, the branches on the ground, etc. Had a rushed feeling and was always a bit behind with the orienteering. Not that many big mistakes but just not a satisfying race.

1-5) A good start, feeling well and enjoying it. Took the road to 5 on purpose, seems to have been a good choice.

6) Picked up another (unmapped) indistinct trail, but realised it was the right one. Relocated when I hit the bigger trail. Better choice was south through the white corridor probably. +50".

7) Good.

8) Sloppy exit out of 7, bad last part into 8. No clear attackpoint, not focused enough. +20".

9) Hesitating in the final part, had to stop for a bit. +15".

10) 'Compass bearing'. Had no idea where I was going, eventually relocated on the trail. +25".

11-13) Ok.

1b:

Failed to pick up my map correctly while running past it, so had to stop. Annoying.

1) Not sharp while leaving the start. Saw the control was the one we'd already been to two times, so figured I'd know how to get there. Nope. +1'30".

2) Ok.

3) Drifted a bit south. Misread control descriptions. +15".

4) Ok.

5) Chaotic route choice, but splits show it wasn't such a bad one. I think I still lost some time though. +10".

6) Hesitating in/near the circle. Didn't have a good AP. +45".

7) Rushed route choice. West around the green would've been better. +15".

8) Ok. Tried to 'restart' my race here.

9) Misread contours in the final part, but realised quickly. +15".

10-F) Good. Weird route to 12, but I believe it was the fastest. To 15 I had enough of trusting my compass and just opted for the trail route. A bit straighter might've been faster, but I'm not sure.

Splits

Fun race, reminded me of the 3 days of Holland in 2007 that started with a night sprint on the same map. Didn't run full speed, always had a little bit left. Made quite a few mistakes, a combination of being unfocused, running in the dark and the tricky course setting. Good start of the weekend :)

Long run just before departing for home again. Small warming up, then controls 1-4 of this course. Continued on 1:50k map up the Zschirnsteine and back down to take the other two hills near Schöna.
Beautiful morning, great views, nice trails and almost nobody in the forest :) Surprised to not even be that tired after 18k of running. Cold almost over as well.

Plan was going up Decinsky Sneznik, but felt quite strong so I added an extra tour with some climbs east of Decin. Rain started and ran out of food while going up Sneznik, so stopped at a cafe to get some food and heat up again. Nice downhill on small forest roads back home after that.

GPS died, last part here.

Hike with mom through the Affensteine area. Just as amazing as I remembered it from three years ago. Foggy at first, sun came out later. Last part missing, GPS died.
