run long 4:39:39 [3] 34.5 mi (8:06 / mi)

The Tahoe Rim Trail "50K" (really 34.5 miles), aka the Road Runners Clubs of America Trail 50K National Championships. Elev. 6800-9000', something like 6900' climb, mostly winding single-track. The race went great, and I broke the previous course record by 14 minutes. But believe it or not, that wasn't enough to win! Paul South of Boulder, CO beat me by 2 minutes. But he's very good (we won the real trail 50K national championships--the USATF one--last year at the Headlands race near San Francisco), so there's no shame in losing to him, especially by this small margin. He absolutely took off out of the start and had over 10 minutes on me after 1.5 hours. I slowly reeled him in to a gap of just 2 minutes at the highest point on the course with 45 minutes to go, but I couldn't catch him on the long downhill that ends the race after that point.

run 21:26 [2] 3.0 mi (7:09 / mi)

Short easy jog, to stay loose before the big event tomorrow!

Thursday Jul 14, 2005 #

run 41:15 [2] 6.0 mi (6:53 / mi)

Easy recovery run. Feel pretty good, and optimistic about Saturday.

Wednesday Jul 13, 2005 #

run tempo 43:21 [4] 7.0 mi (6:12 / mi)

West along ditch trail. My last harder run before the race on Saturday. I was planning on only a ~6:25 pace, but I was feeling pretty good, so I pushed a bit more.

Tuesday Jul 12, 2005 #

run 41:41 [3] 6.0 mi (6:57 / mi)

Switching to getting up early and running in the morning, in preparation for the race early on Saturday. Today felt just a little harder than usual, likely due to the short recovery from last night's run.

Monday Jul 11, 2005 #

run hills 1:50:40 [2] 11.0 mi (10:04 / mi)

From Mt. Rose Pass (elev. 8850') up to the summit of Mt. Rose (elev. 10776'). It was my first time up there, and the views were quite amazing.

Sunday Jul 10, 2005 #

run 29:11 [2] 4.0 mi (7:18 / mi)

Easy jog to test my knee, which felt completely fine during the run, but was slightly sore afterwards. I'll ease back into things.
