Orienteering race 1:47:00 [1] *** 5.0 km (21:24 / km)
10c

I walked most of the way and navigated very carefully. As a result, I only lost contact with the map on one leg (and thus started looking for the control too early). I also had about the fourth slowest time on the Green course. I also really enjoyed myself.

Orienteering 1:42:00 [2]

Lost contact with the map a lot, lost a lot of time, cursed the deadfall I had to constantly step over.

Event: Tahoe 3 Day

Orienteering (sprint) 36:00 [3] 2.2 km (16:22 / km)

Sprint at Northstar Tahoe. Not a campus or park sprint, so I didn't do particularly well. I think I totally blew at least one control. Lots of deadfall. Beautiful weather.

Road running 20:00 [2] 1.75 mi (11:26 / mi)

Ben gave me some nice Berkeley routes yesterday, and I even printed them out, but then I left them on my desk. So I designed my own route today. Went to Rose Garden and back. Discovered something called Rose Lane, or some such. Created in the 1950's, it's still the only pedestrian byway in town that was designed in an integrated fashion with the buildings alongside it.

Walking 12:00 [1] 0.8 mi (15:00 / mi)

Walk and slow jog during (a) the first 300m, and (b) while talking with an interesting guy named Ken I met on the Sawyer Camp Trail. I'd seen him walking with a backpack (a real backpacking backpack) on the sidewalk near my house and wondered what his story was. Was he on some weird trek like walking from San Jose to San Francisco? He was wearing walking shorts, hiking boots, and a wide brim hat. Then when I saw him on the trail I decided to ask him what his story was, since people on weird treks usually like telling their stories.

Turns out he's training for a climb up Mt. Whitney in August. It will be a five-day trek. He's about my age. We talked about staying fit while aging. I told him about orienteering and how there are all these great old people in the sport.

Trail Running 25:00 [2] 2.2 mi (11:22 / mi)

The rest of my "run" on the Sawyer Camp Trail. I took it easy today and I didn't time myself.
