walked to Holcom and used the bike. Planned to use the ellipse, too, but I was kicked out when a class started. So I walked home and did some weights in the basement.

Note

Thought I should comment on the movies I saw yesterday, before the Oscars begin.

From my favorite to least favorite:

1. King's Speech: wonderful characters and great story and acting. My overall favorite of all 10 movies.

2. Black Swan: got better on second viewing. Bizarre movie, but very different kind of story and very interesting.

3. Winter's Bone: grim story but so unexpected and wonderful.

4. Social Network: interesting story, made me wonder about the true story. But I wasn't totally enthralled.

5. Inception: I'm just not into this genre of film, so it didn't grab me.

Clinton Test Loop. Upper 30s and foggy to start, heavy thunderstorm at the end. Up to 3 inches of wet mushy snow on the ground. I decided to hike this course today, give my sore muscles a break and not push for time. Still disappointed that I didn't pay attention and took a round-about route to 2. Although the rest of the course was spot on. Started to get wet and cold on my way to 6. Then around control 7 I noticed it was getting darker in the woods. At 8 I heard the thunder. Left the course after 9 and jogged a bit to keep warm and try to beat the rain. Of course, I didn't. But a kind soul stopped and gave me a ride the last bit back to the car (fun to look at the rate change at the end, before I turned off the Forerunner.)

Shoveled the other half of the drive, so Mike could make it into the garage when he comes home this afternoon.

Then a bit of rowing, so get some exercise before heading off to round two of my movie marathon.

Weights is actually shoveling, which is usually Mike's job. I only shoveled my half of the driveway so I could go to work.

Got some training in at various times of the day as I was working at home. Had an electrician in to do some work, including installing a light switch. So nice to finally be able to turn off the light at both the top and bottom of the stairs. Why don't people think of these things when they build a house???

a trail run at Clinton tonight. Felt surprisingly good. Felt a twinge in the hamstring once or twice but it's much better. Didn't see a single other creature out there tonight.

Wanted to run in the woods to enjoy the 70 degree temps. Wanted to practice moving quickly and reading well. So I went to Rockcrusher and re-ran the New Year's Eve training (the tapes are still out). I thought it would be fun to see how much time I could drop from my first attempt.

That was the plan, any way. You know it's a bad sign when you get to the park and realize you left the map at home (fortunately, it's only 10 minutes from home, so back I went). So many other mistakes out there today. Left one heading 90 degrees off; was too high on 4, missed 7 completely. And while I tried to push the pace and make myself move through the terrain, I took longer today than in December. A total bummer day. Surprised to be so out of shape and to have huge brain lapses. I don't like this recent trend....

Note

Here's how I would rank the movies I saw yesterday (Note: the acting was superb in all, so no need to compare on that point):

1. True Grit: not the most original story, but great characters. Scenery was fantastic and they put down Quantril's Raid :) Did anyone else notice the striking resemblance between Hailee Steinfeld and Anna S-S?

2. Toy Story 3: good plot, made one cry, good pacing. My favorite TS, I think.

3. 127 Hours: I had read the book and wondered how it could be translated to film. It worked great, with flashbacks and hallucinations. Really enjoyed this movie.

4. The Fighter: Yawn. Why do people make boxing movies any more? I could have predicted the whole plot before I even saw it. Fabulous acting and the fact that is was a true story were the only saving graces.

5. The Kids Are Alright: again, the acting made it slightly worthwhile. The plot was absolutely nothing new. As someone else Tweeted yesterday, this movie belongs in the "I'm just happy to be nominated" category

getting in a little bit of exercise at home today. Heading out soon to the Best Picture Showcase. Not sure how my body will deal with sitting all day, but I'm looking forward to the movies. Only downer is I'm missing the PTOC meet on a new map (the O meet was rescheduled, and I had already bought my tickets to the movies).

Now back in my seat and ready for

A nice walk at lunchtime.

Great OK club dinner and meeting tonight. Participants ranged from George and Gene (who founded the club) to Mary Ann ( who is an O newbie). Great food, company and conversation.

A 70 degree day in February seems really weird to me, but I couldn't let it pass. Only had a short time for a jog around the JCCC campus at lunch. I carried the O map, but never looked at it. Felt a few tweaks in the hamstring, but the knee felt fine.

Checking out one of Mike's loops for the March 5th race. Just a quick walk around Dad Perry Park. So nice to be outside without a coat on (although I still needed the neoprene socks as I walked through the melting snow)

Wyandotte test loop. Temps had warmed up into the 40s, so it was great to be outside. The melting deep snow made it a bit tough going uphill, but boy it was lots of fun to run down hill :)

Spiked O shoes were perfect for the late afternoon conditions. Wonder what ebuckley, Mean Gene and eelgrassman wore this morning during the PsycoWyco run?

Enjoyed myself for the first 6 controls. Then everything fell apart. I always have problems hitting 7 exactly (tend to stop at the upstream junction) so I was trying too hard. And I lost my mind. Thought I hit 7 fine, thought I left along the correct reentrant. Was surprised to see a road junction, but decided I had just hit the junction west of 8. Went to 8 (there was a tape there) and then began to notice that things didn't look right. Did that fact make me stop and evaluate my situation? No, of course not. When I convinced myself as was at 9 although it never looked like this before, did I stop and evaluate? No, of course not. Did I notice that the contours were way off? No, of course not. When I hit the road and it didn't look right, did I stop and evaluate? No, of course not. Long story, finally relocated at the road junction near 12. How embarrassing and discouraging.

Went to 12 and 13, then decided to head in, since I had been out long enough and the sun was beginning to go down.

An outing on the trails at Clinton. I walked and jogged whenever I felt, with no real plan. Temps in the 20s and dropping. But crystal clear skies and perfect trail conditions (2 inches of fresh powder on a packed base). Time passed quickly. Hamstring and IT band acted up a bit, but only towards the end.

Lots of problems with my HR strap moving around and giving funny readings, so I estimated my effort tonight.

Practice at Rockcrusher, running the same course that Mike did yesterday (plus some extra at the beginning and end). I wore his headcam, which made me concentrate better, I think, since I knew it was capturing my every move.

Although it didn't help me at 2. I thought I was at the correct spot, until I was on my way to 3 and the trails didn't make sense. (No markers or tapes out there today).

So, I have ultimately come to the realization that many of my recent aches, pains and injuries are not due to over-training (if anything, I'm scared to push through even the slightest pain now). It's clear my muscles are out of whack, in the sense that some are stronger, or weaker, than they need to be. And some are doing more or less work than they are designed to do. Trouble is, how to get that assessed, and find proper exercises to remedy the situation? I would love to go straight to a physical therapist, but in KS and MO you need a prescription from an MD first. Tried searching for places that would do an assessment (sports clinics, personal trainers. etc) but they are not obviously identified as such in a Google search. If anyone else has had any luck with this, please let me know.

Finally decided to go to a chiropractor (I have a bias against them, which I know is not shared by everyone. And I know that my bias is irrational, since it is based on assumption, not actual experiences). This one has helped MeanGene (yes, Dr Jones) and specializes in treating athletes. I figured I had nothing to lose.

He was just what I needed. Thankfully (for my bias) he did not try to "adjust" my back. He just watched me walk, and lunge. And he assessed muscle strength in my legs. And actually listened to my medical and training history. And he diagnosed that my glutes and core are weak, leading to IT band, hamstring and patella femoral issues. Solution: a few visits, to learn various exercises and stretches (plus daily repeats at home). I'm really hopeful that this is all I need (at the moment. I'm a realist about growing older :)

And maybe I'll learn to recognize my own symptoms and treat myself in the future (same as I learned the parts of a car, each time something broke and needed to be repaired).

The temp was -13 this morning, but it warmed up to a balmy 20 degrees by evening, so I decided it was time to play in the snow. Walked up to Holcom, and then skied around a few laps. The snow was perfect. Not the usual mushy stuff we get around here. And it was a crystal clear night, so I could see the stars. Very nice.

Blizzard conditions outside meant I was definitely training inside today. Winds are very strong. JJ will have a hard time keeping the driveways clear; as soon as you shovel some away, more blows in. Also expecting frigid temps for the next few days.

Spent the day at home. Unfortunately, I had to burn a vacation day. But I was able to do a lot of sewing and reading, almost as if it were a Saturday :)
