Nordic track 30:00 [2]

A little something in the basement.

Our Mongolian “cousin” Ideree is visiting. We had a nice conversation tonight while drinking some wine. I enjoy having a drinking buddy. But I’m not sure Mike enjoys two extroverted drinking buddies.

Sandy, Mike and I drove up to Leavenworth today. It was cool and overcast. It had rained in the night but we made it through without getting wet.

It was a score O so we got to choose our own route. We all picked a similar route, I started first, and saw Mike near 15. Sandy caught me around 17 and we were together until 9. Then she easily pulled away from me on the street O section (she is much faster).

I warmed up on the way to the first few controls and felt OK for most of the race. Got tired slogging up the hill to 2.

It was nice to spend the drive time in good conversation with Sandy.

It was a long day at work and I just wanted to relax, but the weather was picture perfect fall weather. So I printed a nice O map from Susie Madden of Donald Park, and drove out there for a run. It was beautiful old farmstead, mix of grass paths through the prairie and dirt paths through the woods. Even some huge rock features for interest! It was a nice run.

Greenbush day 2, Green course

I brought my brain with me today, for the most part. It was pouring rain when I started but it let up sometime during the run. It was hard to move through the woods due to lots of downed trees and vegetation hiding the downed trees. It was also hard to see the markers through the vegetation. Twice I was within 20 feet and couldn't see the marker.

I was really glad to have the trail system at the beginning so I could start to make sense of the contours. Most of the time I was still guessing. I would be saying things like, "it will either be a small spur or a small reeentrant" and I would be prepared to see something up or down when I got there. I think my problem was that the up/down tick marks were spaced far enough apart that I didn't always see them; I learned to look far left and right for the tick mark and that helped.

I had a decent day, reading fairly well. I moved very slowly but that was fine by me. I had a really good leg going to 9 and I knew I was going to spike the control (I even knew if it would be up or down :) When I got there, I said, now don't get cocky. So I was cautious to 10. At one point I thought I saw a flash of orange but then it disappeared with the next step, so I ignored it. Soon I wasn't entirely sure where I was, so I made the smart decision to bail out to the trail. When I attacked again, I came to the spot where I had seen the flash of orange. Doh!

Another hesitation on 15 where I couldn't read all the contours close together (I thought it was one big hill but it was actually up, down, up again). And then some nice trail running to end the course.

So happy to have a decent navigation day on this challenging terrain. It was fun!

Greenbush day 1 (Kettle Moraine State Park)
Green course, DNF

I was so psyched to come back to Kettle Moraine Park. I really enjoyed the 2009 Champs, and I came back her with Disorienteer and Linear Ice for a training camp a few years later. This place is hard and it kicked my butt the first few times, but I loved the challenge and the open woods.

I was a bit cocky coming into this event, figuring I had 10 years experience under my belt. Even so, I promised myself I would walk slowly and carefully to the first control (I messed up the first control in 2009).

I tried in the beginning but I was distracted by two other starters. And the fact that I could not make sense of the contours. I walked very slowly, around and around the first control, I relocated to the start triangle three times. It didn't help that the vegetation was thick and the visibility was low. But I still could not understand what was up and what was down. In hindsight, I didn't realize that the contour interval was 3 m. But still. I was about to give up on 1 when I saw the marker out of the corner of my eye. By now I had been out for 26 minutes, and I only wanted to be out about an hour today.

I looked at the rest of the course, and decide to go from 1 to 11 and then the rest to the finish.

I walked slowly towards 11, checking off features. Thinks were making a little bit of sense and then suddenly they were not. I tried a little bit but then decided to give up and head out to the trail. Of course, I stumbled upon 11 while I was doing that.

I decided to keep going and try to salvage the day. I was still surprised sometimes to see something was up when I expected it to be down, etc. but I went slow enough that I manged the short legs without any more disasters.

I still had fun because I love this park, and I appreciated that the Badger group was hosting us. I stuck around to help with marker pickup (but only the beginner course, I didn't want to get lost again!) and to help with results.

Nice dinner that night with Chiori and Shin.

run race 17 [5] 0.1 km (2:50 / km)

KS Senior Games, 100 meters 17.29

Another hot day for the Senior Games track event. I was surprised when I pulled up and there were plenty of parking spaces. And then the stadium was empty and there were more volunteers than competitors. Guess this is what happens on off years (even years are qualification races for Nationals).

There were only 3 women running 100 meters (in all age classes from 50 to 100). I hadn't felt very good as I warmed up. And then I stood around a bit before I started. I got a good start, but then felt completely tight for the last 20-30 meters and really had to push.

I was not happy with this race, but I shouldn't have been surprised. I haven't been training for sprints, I had a stressful week, I was not motivated, and it was frickin' hot with a brisk headwind.

Took a break then came back in the heat for the 50 meters. I warmed up in the shade under the stands. I heard them announce that the race would be starting 10 minutes early. That was unusual and something new to get used to. I think that is why I still run these races. It's too late in the season and too hot to try for a PR. But I like the practice and learning to be prepared for anything.

Only 3 of us again. I got a good start and felt OK but not fast. And then I was done and went home.

Note

Another day with no training. I had expected to do something but then found out that my elderly aunt was in the hospital, 2.5 hours away. We are the closest relatives, so I drove up there for a visit today. Lots of driving, but otherwise a good day (she looked better than I feared).

I asked my trainer to go light on the legs this week since I have two sprint races on Sunday. I didn't think he'd go all-in on the arms, though! Tough day.

Tonight's set:
1) arm push-outs with band. Start with both arms straight out in front. Keep one stationary, move the other one in and out 15X. Repeat with other arm. Then both arms 15X.
2) Lat pull down with hands spread far apart on the bar. 10X unknown weight.
3) Half squat then push weights overhead: 10x with 20lbs
4) plank hold (20 sec? 30 sec?)

Keep intending to work out, but my mind is not agreeing with my body this week. Tonight I came home and had a glass of wine before we went out for dinner, where I had two more drinks. I blame work and travel stress. But it was very nice to celebrate anniversary #22!

I took today as an extra vacation day. This is a luxury I can enjoy these days since I have much more vacation time than Mike. So nice to ease back into the real world after a lovely O trip. I'm with Cristina: who's ready for the next O trip already? Join me in Greenbush.

Notes on the weekend:

My comments on the lack of organization this weekend. There were several things that are not expected at a US Nationals:
1. start crew not prepared on Middle: they were understaffed and poorly organized. They did get more staff and semi-fixed things eventually, but it messed up many starters and may have impacted their mental state.
2. Buses: not enough and not clear on timelines. They were waiting at the parking area for starters instead of picking up finishers. Long delays.
3. Results: Unclear results each day (multiple screens, some with starts, some with results). Not clear who was US eligible and who was not.
4. Relay: not a good sign when they ask if anyone can help with the software only 30 minutes before the relay started. The have not yet figured out the results.
5. Course printing: numbers were not always placed optimally for reading. One of mine was in a section of three close controls, and the number was overprinted in an out-of-bounds area, and I couldn't read it. Other times, the number was pretty far from the circle.
6. Course setters: when you have to ask someone to set the sprint and relay course 3 weeks before the event....
7. Volunteers: overall, they were understaffed. It seemed like the number of BAOC competitors were more than the number of BAOC volunteers. They will need to change this, and get help from other clubs, for NAOC.
8. (edited): Middle White course had two controls flipped. Fail.

I will say that the maps were good, the course designs were very good, the markers were all in the right place. They got the key things right.
EDIT: I forgot about he White course on Friday. They flipped two controls. This was a major error.

And high five to Erin for his remote sprint and relay course setting.

US Nationals Sprint, Cabrillo College, F55 course 3

The meet notes were very confusing as they described the multi-layer mapping, but in the end, they kept us on well mapped and clear sections of the map. This was a great sprint location and the course was very good. I had a lot of fun!

Other than the first control, again. We had to go up the stairs right away to get to the start triangle. Somehow I forgot that I could look at the map already. I was winded when I turned it over, got confused and decided I had to go up around the first building, instead of turning left immediately. I ran past a long building and was surprised when I got to the end. I thought it was the building with my first control, so I thought I had gone too far. Back and up the stairs, running around like crazy, finally acknowledged that nothing made sense. Stopped and looked at the map, and figured it out after I got some oxygen in my brain. Lost 2 minutes here. The only positive thing is that I knew the race was lost already, so I could slow down to an appropriate pace and run cleanly for the rest of the course.

And I did enjoy the rest of the course. It was a really good navigational challenge and a cool campus. Nice arena set-up, too.

Sprint Relay, Cabrillo College, 8 pt club.

Ran with Mike and Dave as an official OK team. Mike ran the first leg and I ran second. I felt OK and ran at a reasonable pace. The biggest issue was that the control codes were not printed next to the control circle (as the meet notes said they would) so I kept unfolding my map to read the codes (and there were a lot of controls). I definitely did not want to mis-punch in a relay. Although it didn't matter in the end since they couldn't figure out results.

I was working hard and moving well. It helped that the course was pretty easy (no tricky levels to look for). I was happy to see that Dave started in the mass start on leg 3 and was not waiting for me. I had a slight bobble on the second to last control, and lots of slow downs to read the map and make decisions. but other wise this was a clean run.

I didn't plan to sprint all out in the finish chute (four races in three days is a lot) but the atmosphere and the adrenaline kicked in and I just took off. That was fun!

US Nationals Long, Big Basin, F55

Today's course was only 0.4km longer than our Middle, so I was afraid of the climb. In the end, it wasn't so bad. The winning time was a bit fast. Overall, I liked the course design a lot and I'm glad we got some longer route choices. I walked most of this course.

It was fun to turn over the map and see a long leg to 1. I kept trying to see a way to use the road, but I couldn't see much (my compass was covering the start triangle, duh!). I took the trails and stream bed, which was the best choice. Executed this one cleanly, which was a nice way to start.

I stood at 2 for a minute trying to decide the route to 3. Once again, I tried to find a way to use the road, but all I saw was that it went way out of the way. I never saw that it joined up with a nice big trail, which was definitely the best route choice. Kudos to Lisa and anyone else who saw/took that route.

I had a good plan and went to the left to avoid the steepest sections. I got to the big hill and knew I was looking for a spur off a flat area. No marker, lots of wandering. Kept thinking I had stopped and relocated, but not really. Finally went all the way back to the hill, then looked very closely at the map and realized I had to go down to the next flat area. Really mad that I wandered for 15 minutes here. Should learn to read the map.

Getting from 3 to 4 was really tough, physically. Hard to avoid green or steep. Rest of the course was easier and flatter. I felt a little better about today's effort but still disappointed in my big mistake. I was happy with my physical fitness, especially after 2 tough days. I was a bit tired, but not wiped out. That is good progress.

US Nationals Middle, Big Basin State Park, F55 Brown

It still feels weird to run Brown. The course distance seemed short when it was announced, but of course, I was really glad it was that short while I was out there!

Nice map, OK course. Tough terrain: soft footing, some thick vegetation, and very steep hillsides. I don't like steep places: I get very scared.

Big mistake on first control. I seem to have issues with settling into maps. I ran past it and was heading back to relocate at the start triangle when I saw someone leaving the marker. Lost almost 3 minutes here.

I didn't have a clear plan going to 3 other than "follow the stream bed". Which was not so easy to do, since there was no water in the steams. I finally found the stream bed and started going along, following other footsteps. But it was very difficult and VERY steep and quite terrifying. There was one point where I was trying to climb up to a slightly flat spot and I got stuck clinging to the side of the hill, spread out, with no purchase for hands or feet. I thought to myself "they shouldn't be putting Brown runners on this hill". Did that thought make me stop and wonder? No, it did not. Not until I could see the stream junction, with no marker in sight, did I stop and take a closer look at the map. Classic parallel error. Only some blue course runners had taken this route and they agreed to was a crazy steep hillside. Some how I made it up out of there and over to the correct stream system (much flatter) and found my control. Lost 7 minutes on this route. Definitely should have paid a lot more attention to where I was going as I left 2; poor route execution.

Another bad route execution to 6. I didn't have a clear attack after the clearings. I must have walked pretty close to the marker, but I didn't stop until I got to the stream. I couldn't make sense of where I was exactly (the hill seemed steeper than mapped) so I went back to relocate at the road. Lost about 4 minutes here.

I knew where I was going as I left 7, but when I got to the stream/gully, I decided it was too steep and I backed away. I went through a less steep, but much greener, section.

I was glad to finish. I was hot and tired and not too happy with my run.
