Wednesday May 31

jog 40:00 [3]
ahr:150

Jogging around the fields at SMP after work.

Sunday May 28

walking (warm up/cool down) 30:00 [2]
trails 1:05:00 [3]
ahr:155

Another PR for continuous jogging. I went to the river trails in Lawrence today. It was nice not to have to run laps around PNS for a change. And when I got to the half way point, it felt better since I knew it was (figuratively) all down hill from here.

It was tough today. My legs were stiff when I awoke (who knows why; the most strenuous thing I did yesterday was walk around the grocery store) and they took a while to warm up. Maybe the heat added some stress, also. I kept looking at my watch every thirty seconds or so during the last five minutes. My legs were really dead at the end.

I figured out why my HRM has been acting up lately: I've actually lost enough weight that I had to tighten the strap. Pretty cool!

After the jog, I drove around Lawrence vetting controls for the urban score O. It felt good to sit.

Weight = 0.933 M

Slow jog on the trails at SMP after work.

Tuesday May 23

treadmill 25:00 [3]

Just a few minutes on the hotel treadmill--this was as long as I could stand.

What's wrong with this picture? Mike is on a business trip to San Jose CA, and I'm on a business trip to Ft. Dodge IA. He flew, I drove. I need to be more selective in choosing my next job...

I've seen alot of Missouri in the last few days. The first drive, back from St Louis, went very quickly, thanks to Sharon's entertaining company. Today I was on my own, and there was not much entertaining going on. The corn has just sprouted, for those who are interested. There is a tourist center for the bridges of Madison county (also the birthplace of John Wayne), for those who are interested. Can you tell it was an exciting trip????

Sunday May 21

orienteering race 1:34:00 [4] *** 5.8 km (16:12 / km)
ahr:159 13c

Team Trials at Hawn. I was by myself today, which meant it was harder to push myself to keep jogging. Plus, this was the third day in a row of competition, which is pretty tough on my body right now.

Navigation was OK; one bobble on #3; one big, ten-minute mistake on #6. I stopped concentrating along the way, thought I had relocated on a fence, wandered a bit along the stream to the east, finally relocated, found the control and moved on. Bummer to have had that first mental lapse, but I managed to admit I had to relocate, and was able to put the mistake out of my mind to finish the course cleanly (although slowly).

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the weekend. I can see some improvement in my speed through the woods, and my fitness. Still need to work on the map reading, as always. But three decent days in a row; I'll take that.

Great weekend all around, in terms of courses, weather, company. One glaring exception: no Lisa. Otherwise, I couldn't have asked for anything more.

Saturday May 20

orienteering race 44:00 [4] *** 3.6 km (12:13 / km)
ahr:160 13c

Team Trial at S - F. One of my fastest (min/k) woods runs ever. I started in the middle of the pack, and lots of faster runners passed me. I decided to try to keep up with them as long as I could. Due to the flat terrain, and my recent training, I was able to go relatively fast. I was with other green runners for about half the course.

In addition, my navigation was pretty clean. One small bobble on #5 (drifted down the hill) and some temporary confusion on the trail near 11, but that's it. So, overall I was pretty pleased today.

Green/Brown - Splits

Friday May 19

Event: US Team Trials

orienteering race 31:00 [4] *** 2.6 km (11:55 / km)
ahr:173 18c

Sprint at UMSL. I did OK whenever I was reading the map. I had watched the Team Trials runners first, and thought I knew exactly how to get through the controls around the train tracks. So I put away my map and kept jogging. Just as I was approaching the train underpass, I saw a control out of the corner of my eye. I almost ran right past #5! That will teach me to assume anything...

I managed to jog a lot of the course. My legs got tired towards the end, especially on all the stairs. Overall, I was pleased with my run. I don't think the HR reflects my effort; 10 bpm must be due to the heat.

Sunday May 14

jog/walk (warm up/cool down) 20:00 [3]
trails 55:00 [3]

Another long jog at PNS, another PR. It was tough to keep my pace today, since my HRM was acting up (forgot to spray Static Guard on my shirt). According to the watch, my HR was either 0, 80 or 193.

My legs felt dead this morning when I woke up, but then they were fine during the run. I got a little bit tired at the end, but no more than would be expected.

There were a lot of people out today, including another jogger on the upper trail, which hardly ever happens.

Saturday May 13

Note

Walked around KU and Lawrence for 3 hours today, checking locations for the score o event next month.

Saw an interesting example of symbiosis: college guy, staring at the mess of beer cans on the front yard, starting to clean it up. Along comes a homeless man with a sack, who asks if he can have all the cans. Yes! Both folks are happy.

PTOC had a sprint event at Sar-Ko-Par park. I did a brisk walk, and tried to complete the course without any errors. Made one slight error when I missed an overgrown trail junction, but otherwise I hit everything cleanly.

Found a $20 bill on the course, so I treated Mike to a free dinner after the event.

Friday May 12

jog 25:00 [3]
ahr:151

Jogging round the cross-country course at Bonner Park. It was a little bit tough tonight, because I'm tired from a week of work, and the course covers some gently rolling ground (I've been sticking to the flats for most of my training).

Still, it was a beautiful spring evening out in the park.

Wednesday May 10

jog 40:00 [3]
ahr:146

Shuffling around the fields at SMP.

Sunday May 7

orienteering race 1:57:00 [4] *** 5.95 km (19:40 / km)
ahr:147 16c

Day Two at West Point: Another OK day, which meant I succeeded on my goal of having two decent days in a row. I was still slow, and far from perfect, but no huge blowups. First time this year I have put together two days in a row (sad but true). Maybe I hit rock bottom at the relays, and now I can start the long climb back to the level of orienteering I had achieved three years ago.

Saturday May 6

Event: West Point A meet

orienteering race 1:40:00 [4] *** 4.95 km (20:12 / km)

Day One at West Point: I had an OK day. No disasters, some small bobbles, even managed to spike a few controls. The beautiful sunny weather helped.

orienteering 20:00 [3] ***

Sprint Course at West Point. I walked to the few controls around the camp (none in the woods). My legs were OK after the morning's run, but there was no sense in pushing too hard with one more day to go.

Green Y - Splits

Monday May 1

jog/walk 50:00 [3]
ahr:131

Once last training on the big hill at Wyandotte before the West Point meet.
