cycle 20:00 [2]

This is exactly why I bought a bike. I felt the need to do something, for just a few minutes. So I hopped on the bike and went for a short ride in the cool evening.

So excited to be leaving for Yellowstone tomorrow. Due to all the house stuff, we haven't been on a vacation in two years. A whole week of rest and relaxation , with no schedule. Just me and Mike. Priceless.

There is limited to no cell coverage, so I won't post updates till we get back.

Note

Back to the podiatrist today. Since the first cortisone shot helped, but I still had some pain (after walking on Sat), we agreed it was time for a second shot. I told her about the pain I felt after the first shot, so she gave me a different formulation this time. Much better. Only slightly irritated at the injection site.

I was inspired by Colleen N to do my own version of a triathlon today.

I started with a walk at the arboretum, to see if I could handle being on my feet for 30 minutes. Felt a little tight at the beginning, but I stretched and took it slow until I warmed up. Felt fine during the rest of the walk. But later, the arch and heel were sore, but still much improved over a few weeks ago. I think the cortisone shot helped.

Then to the indoor aquatic center, where I jogged over the scuba divers.

Finally, Mike and I explored the west campus map by bike. I even tried a little stretch of gravel road. A little scary for me on the return (slight downhill slope). Need to practice this more.

erg 10:00 [2]

An unbelievably beautiful August day--cool, breezy and sunny. Mike and I went out for a quick ride to enjoy the evening and kick off the weekend.

First workout in our home gym. (We need to name the room: any suggestions, other than The Gym?) Nice to be in a finished basement.

aqua jog 20:00 [3]

The pools were all open again today, so I went to the HS pool to check it out. Much smaller than the indoor aquatic center, but also fewer people and easy access. I planned to go for 30 minutes, but I haven't done this in a while (edit since July 6th) and I got tired after only 20 minutes.

weights 20:00 [1]

Lots of work around the house, lifting, pulling, pushing, drilling, carrying.... Logging some time as weights.

I finally have a functional closet. Removed the carpet (dog urine) and mildewy particle board shelves, so it smells a lot better. New vinyl floor and many wire shelves makes it look nicer and have twice the storage. One last step to install a light fixture (instead of just a bare bulb!) and I'll be done.

cycle 45:00 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (20:00 @2) + (18:00 @3) + (2:00 @4)

My foot felt pretty good this morning, so I decided I could handle a bike ride. Explored the path towards Clinton Lake. I'm beginning to feel more comfortable on the bike (in terms of handling, and muscle strength) so I pushed the pace more than usual. And I made it up Kasold with one gear to spare :)

I'm also learning to look at the faces of people I meet when I'm out. I'm used to an anonymous life, but now that I live in Lawrence, I know people and people know me. So today I was able to recognize Grover (aka Mook's dad) just as we passed each other on the path.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Yeah, well, that was a mistake. Woke up this morning, feeling more pain than I have in weeks. It was definitely the tendon, not the fascia, so I suppose there is some hope. Kept the foot elevated all day, and it's starting to ease up. We;ll see how it feels tomorrow.

orienteer 20:00 intensity: (6:00 @1) + (11:00 @2) + (3:00 @3) 2.0 km (10:00 / km)

O at Bonner Park. My foot (tendinitis) had been acting up all day, but I was so desperate to move around on a map that I started walking on this course. After a while, my foot was hurting more and I was having a reaction to some vegetation, so I decided it was time to stop.

NIce dinner afterward with Mike and Pete.

cycle 20:00 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (5:00 @2)

My first bike ride with a purpose. Rode to the grocery store, bought dinner, rode home. I feel so eco-responsible.

I'm also "off the grid" tonight, in a sense. I left my iPhone at work, and I hardly know what to do with myself :)

Monday Aug 10, 2009 #

cycle 25:00 intensity: (13:00 @1) + (12:00 @2)
(injured)

Mike and I rode over to LHS tonight, so I could check out the route. It's the closest track, and the pool will be open for public sessions beginning next Monday. Nice to have Mike for the company, of course, but he's also giving me lots of "cycling in traffic" tips. A little nerve wracking crossing Iowa street, but I'll get used to it.

weights 10:00 [2]

Spent a lot of time tonight planing doors that stuck (or wouldn't close at all). Satisfying to have it done; how did the previous owners put up with these doors? My arms definitely got a workout, so I'm logging it as a few minutes of weight training.

Saturday Aug 8, 2009 #

cycle 40:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (20:00 @2) + (10:00 @3)

It's going to be a brutally hot day today, so I got out on the bike first thing. Explored the path to the terminus on Iowa. On the way home, I made it all the way up the Kasold hill without stopping, although I did need my lowest gear possible. Don't know if "granny gear" applies if you're not a granny? How about "wimpy" or "woefully out of shape"?

cycle 28:00 intensity: (18:00 @1) + (8:00 @2) + (2:00 @3) 4.0 mi (7:00 / mi)

Finally, some exercise. Pretty leisurely ride with Mike. Felt good to be moving again, and there was no stress (that I felt) on the foot.

Wednesday Aug 5, 2009 #

Note

MRI results:
--My plantar fascia is 7 mm (instead of 4 mm) thick over a 1.2 cm section (which is fairly large apparently)
--still have slight tendinitis, probably in compensation for the PF
--stress fracture is completely healed, but there is still slight inflammation of the heel, again, due to the PF

I probably started running again too soon (although the doc and PT both thought I was ready)

Next steps:
cortisone shot
recreational walking or cycling only
follow up in 3 weeks

The shot didn't hurt going in, but the next few hours were brutal! Ibuprofen and ice helped slightly. But it got better over time, and now it is just a little tight.

Have cortisone shots worked for anyone? Hard to find reliable reports on the internet. I'm just so frustrated and want this to be completely better.

Tuesday Aug 4, 2009 #

Note

More house stuff tonight. Mostly cleaning (used up a Magic Eraser, the best_product_ever) and some minor toilet repairs. Also, attached a blank switch plate to an outlet that was just bare wires. Why do people leave things like that? How hard is it to buy a 69 cent cover and put it on?

Still no training. I visit the podiatrist in the morning, to get the full results of the MRI. Will wait to see what she says before I start to train again. I figure a few weeks sitting around is better than doing too much, too soon.

Note

No training tonight. Not much unpacking either. Instead we had a nice evening with Ideree, our first house guest.

cycle 30:00 intensity: (18:00 @1) + (12:00 @2)
(injured)

A short ride to explore the bike paths near our house. They go all around town (we live just off Clinton Parkway and Iowa, on the south side of the KU campus).

Still have shifting issues Also, quads are not in shape for climbing hills. Although I did ride up our driveway!

Lots of fun.
