orienteer 1:03:00 [3] *** 3.8 km (16:35 / km)

Local meet at Blue Springs, orange course. Crappy woods, beautiful weather, nice company.

Not a very good day in the woods. I should know, whenever my overwhelming feeling on the way to the meet is "I want to take a nap", it's not going to be a good day. Meet workers were surprised that I was doing Orange. But I'm terribly out of shape. And, as discussed elsewhere, I often use local meets as practice, rather than competition. I don't always have a plan (for the perfect practice) but I usually practice some skill along the way. Today, after I messed up the first control, and was tripping over my feet as I plodded through the long grass towards 2, I decided to practice how to recover during a bad run. "Suppose this was an A meet: what would you do ?" Slowed down, looked at the map much more often, didn't fight my compass when I didn't believe what it was telling me. Helped get me through the course, slowly, with fewer mistakes. And made me want to finish the course, instead of cutting it short, as I had been tempted to do.

erg 30:00 [2]

Note

Since Valerie is willing to bare all, so must I.
Here is my day one US Champs mess. On the way to 1, I was convinced that the contour lines before the control were _down_, so I stopped when I hit the hill. (I know, totally dumb.) Finally figured it out when I crossed by marker 8. The long error at number 7 was just brain dead about where I was when I climbed the hill.

Day two was a lot better.
I forgot to charge my FR, so I ran out of battery around my mistake at 10. After I found 10, I was clean to the finish (including the infamous 12, which I saw as a depression)

walk warm up/down 20:00 [1]

orienteer race 1:35:34 [4] *** 5.4 km (17:42 / km)
13c

Day two in WI went much better. I was moving slower since my legs were so tired. But I kept better contact with the map. And I remembered my strategy for those times when things didn't make sense: stop and count to ten. Allows my brain to get some oxygen.

One lapse on a parrallel trail cost me about 5 minutes. Some small bobbles along the way but pretty minor. I was pleased.

Many thanks to BDG for a great event. I especially loved Saturday's course. It was the best I've seen in while. Also had a great time visiting with so many friends.

walk warm up/down 20:00 [1]

orienteer race 1:55:44 [4] *** 5.1 km (22:42 / km)
13c

Goal was to walk cleanly through the course. No expectations since I'm out of shape and out of practice.

I was excited to see our long first leg. Read the map well in the beginning but then got the up and down mixed up. Wandered for too long before I stumbled on control 8. I least I knew where I was, finally.

Next few controls went fairly well. Was moving OK, keeping contact.
Until I got tired climbing the hill to 7. Didn't think clearly , wandered too long. Finally figured it out. Very tired the rest of the course. Stumbled my way in.

Disappointed to be dead last on the course. I never wanted to be back here again. At least I know what it will take to improve.

Beautiful woods, excellent course design, nice weather and good company helped make it a good day, overall.

Nice walk on the model map. The woods were so beautiful and open , especially compared to last weekend.

walk warm up/down 10:00 [1]

run/walk 20:00 intensity: (4:00 @1) + (16:00 @3)

jog/walk at Clinton. Between the wet ground and decaying leaves, the woods smelled really bad, like urine, or New Jersey.

Note

Time to celebrate tonight. After four months of trying, I finally made it through 21 consecutive (work) days complaint-free! I decided to limit it to work, because that's my most challenging situation. It was really hard. Mostly I had to learn to keep my mouth shut (which is almost impossible for me!)

I think I read somewhere that navigational ability declines sharply at age 47....

Beautiful day for a walk at Clinton. I am SO ready for next weekend; I'm going walk all over the other slow pokes.

Local O meet at Weston Bend. I walked the Orange course.

Some good things I can say about today's meet:
--the weather was perfect (48 degrees)
--I talked to some friends
--I talked to some newcomers
--I burned some calories
--Premarked maps!
--I thanked the volunteer meet workers (as always)
--Navigation was rusty but not too bad
--I worked out some early season O bugs (remember to look at compass often and ignore other folks always)
--there were Godiva chocolates waiting for me at the finish (thanks Nancy!)

run/walk 25:00 intensity: (5:00 @3) + (20:00 @4)

I took a "mental health" vacation day today, so I was able to get outdoors in the day time. Went to the far end of Clinton and explored the trails. The old map is still very accurate out there (as far as trails are concerned; vegetation and man-made features have changed). One new set of trails was a mountain bike skills area which looked pretty cool. They ask you to sign a waiver and leave it in the box before you go on the course. Interesting.

Did 5 sets of 1 w/4 j. Felt really good. Some folks might be afraid of tripping, but I glided over the rocks and limbs as if they weren't even there.

walk 20:00 [2]

Walk at lunch time since I have a commitment after work. I was really flying! I didn't wear my GPS, but I think I hit 4 min/k. Felt f*#@ great!

Did you know the Giants have a lifetime winning percentage of 0.588 over the Redskins?

Exploring points on the west campus map with Fritz's girlfriend, Tracy. Slower pace than I planned but interesting company

4X (2w/3j)

Legs were tired, and I was sleepy, so HR was pretty high. Chilly, windy day at Clinton. Mike did some field checking while I explored the trails using the basic map.

run/walk 18:00 intensity: (3:00 @1) + (15:00 @3)

on the trails at Clinton. 3X (1 walk/5 jog)

Ice and ibuprofen afterward. I felt some pain after the run on Tuesday, and tonight, I felt a tweak or two during the run. Decided to be safe. I think I'll tone down the running and up the walking for a little while.

Bought a "new" car today. Never before had such a young 'un (2008 Corolla, 24K miles). Never before had 4 speakers that work. Never before bought from a commercial establishment. Never before spent more than $8000. Can you tell I'm not a car person? I'm enjoying the quiet engine, and the warnings that the keys are inside or the lights are still on (I need those warnings!)

Anyone want a 97 Corolla with 210K miles?

Note

Only exercise today was walking from the parking lot to the stadium, and then jumping up and down, cheering the Giants to victory. Great game, great weather, great company.

First local meet of the fall season, at Landahl. It's too early to be in the woods, but it was better than I expected. Of course, I walked the orange course (just for Valerie:) and stayed on trails 90% of the time. Nice weather, good company, as always. I'll post my route as soon as I remember how to export from SportTracks to QuickRoute to AP.

1 walk/4 jog
on the trails that Mike flagged on west campus. Just the right kind of loop for me at this time.
