I love giving out candy to kids on Halloween night. I love when the candy corn goes on sale tomorrow :)

orienteer 49:00 intensity: (20:00 @3) + (29:00 @4) 4.4 km (11:08 / km) +2m 11:07 / km
ahr:64 max:123 12c (sick)

SLOC relays, leg 2 (green) of unofficial 4 pt team. I was removed from our official team, partly because I was sick, mostly because Dan was on the the team in the past, he's a much better orienteer, and he's now worth 2 points :) Time and HR zones are a guess, since my strap didn't work, once again, and I accidentally stopped my watch during the race.

Clean run, but a bit slow in places. It was so vague, and my goal was "no mistakes", so sometimes the best option was to jog towards the control, then slow to a walk and keep your eyes open for the flag. Made a mistake at 7 (got off my compass line; need to work on this) but I corrected quickly. Felt pretty good physically, although I could tell it was day three and I didn't have a lot of push left in my legs.

Fun area, great spectating, glad to be on a team with Pete, Fritz and Dave. Lots of fun visiting with others, and so happy to be able to drive and be unpacked at home by 7:30 pm. So jealous of the east coasters who get to do this all the time. A fun weekend.

Middle distance at SLOC. I was tired. I made mistakes. Not a good day in the woods. Followed by a delicious gourmo lunch and epunch training. Time to rest up for the relays. EDIT: manually adjusted HR training zones

Great fun at the annual OK banquet tonight. Fun to have so many of us together again.

Night O champs. My goal was move cleanly and briskly. I was worried about my cold, but it was a non-issue. I walked most of the course, and did OK on the navigation. I can tell it's early in the season, because I wasn't always confident that I was on track, and I second guessed myself a few times. Most of the time, I was on track and doing fine. Managed most controls well tonight; with some problems on 5 and 9. Really slowed down on the last part of the course, because I was tired and the vegetation was just as crappy as home.

New flexible HR strap seemed to have problems. No way my HR was this low. EDIT: I manually adjusted my HR training zones

Other (tennis) 15:00 [1]

This year, my "new" sport is tennis. I had my first park and rec class tonight. All adults, for a change. Mostly women, many in their 20s. It was fun, although I wish we had a little more instruction, rather than just drills. The class is a mix of beginners and intermediates, and I guess they want to keep us moving, rather than standing around listening. The class lasted an hour, but I'm only logging 15 minutes of activity.

(sick)

The gods are against me. I picked up a f*%#+*g cold from a coworker. Timing totally sucks, only one week till the relay. Lots of rest, coldeze and wishful thinking for me this week.

Tonight's torture move: side plank on one forearm, while the other arm lifts a 5 lb weight from mat to straight up in the air. 10 repeats. Each side. 3X. Oh yeah, right.

Some easy night O practice on west campus. The main goal was to get used to reading a map again with the headlight. I had to adjust my head to be able to read through the map case and the magnifier. Walked around tonight, just because I didn't feel like running, for some reason. HR strap no longer sits flush against my chest, so the HR readings were totally wonky. I think I need to buy one of those super flexible HR straps.

ahr:132 max:165

Long distance at Clinton, with 7 jog/3 walk repeats. Since I had never gone out for this long before, I decided to take it very easy. Made myself jog slowly, and walk up even the slightest incline. It was a good strategy, since I was tired at the end, but not completely dead. Beautiful morning

ahr:156 max:178 12c

First PTOC woods event of the season. It was too soon to enter the woods, and they were pretty crappy. I took trails when I could. I concentrated on reading ahead, and moving smoothly without stopping. Although I stopped when I needed to, such as planning my route to 8. Mistake at 11 when I thought the control was on a single tree, rather than the pond. The clue sheet was on the map, and it was a pain to unfold it at each control. Ended up having the fastest time on the green course today. Last year, I ran a 6.6 K course here in 17 min/k. It's nice to be 2 minutes/k faster this year. My route

Waited till sundown to start my run, so I could use my headlamp tonight. Need to get used to it again, before the night O champs in a few weeks. Felt a bit tentative with the light, but the running felt good.

Woo hoo, I met my goal weight, plus one! And my weight hasn't had a "zero" middle digit since I was in college! I am so happy, mostly because I can now eat again and not be constantly hungry :)

Jogged and walked around Poet's Walk in Rhinebeck, while Mike, Summer and Pam walked. This was a small dirt track loop, with some open areas, and some woods areas. Beautiful view of the Hudson River at the end. It was hot, and my Garmin HR went really wonky. But I'm so glad I did something, to counteract all the eating and sitting we had been doing.

Note

Flying to NY for an Eglinski family event (FIL's 80th birthday). Bad timing in terms of O events, but perfect timing to see the fall colors. And enjoy visiting with my in laws and eating great food. I'm looking forward to racing around the woods with my nephew, and talking to my niece for the first time (she's 2 1/2).

We may have some time to squeeze in some O practice, too.

Went to Sar Ko Par to re-run a PTOC sprint course. Not the best O training, but I'm not sure I'll get another chance to O this week.

I was sleepy and didn't feel like pushing the pace. Turns out I ran this in May 2010, but 26 seconds faster. Interestingly, I took a few different routes tonight. I slowed down a bit in the second half of the course, though.

ahr:116 max:173 12c

New PTOC map. Thirty minute score O. When in the woods, we were restricted to trails or stream bed only. I went out with my friend Brandi (her first time) and her 5 year old daughter Erin. It was amazing to watch Brandi; I've never seen a beginner get it to fast. She oriented her map at each control (without a compass) and anticipated what we would see as we progressed on the trail. Good for her! It was great to see her and Erin have so much fun. Our route.

orienteer 23:30 intensity: (27 @1) + (2:07 @2) + (5:59 @3) + (14:57 @4) 1.5 km (15:40 / km) +50m 13:26 / km
ahr:160 max:177 9c

Then there was the option to go back on the map, with the same controls, but a short point-to-point course. I started out too fast, thinking about running instead of navigating, and I misread the circle number for 2 (went to 5 instead) Doh! Then I started up the ditch near 4, before I realized I was heading in the wrong direction. Back to the trail, then the stream bed. After that, I told myself to calm down and navigate cleanly, which helped. Finished second for the day (although the Barrett boys didn't run, and I wasn't as tired as the other folks who raced hard on the score O).

This was a lot of fun, in a challenging little park. It also helped that today was another picture perfect fall day. Followed by a nice lunch with Reta, Dick, Paul, Mike and Mike. My route.
