I hadn't run in more than a week, so it was definitely time to get out there and remind my body what it felt like. Especially before I race this weekend.

But I had to wait when I got home, until the temp dropped below 100. Psychologically, I couldn't go out before then. Plus, it felt like it was getting "cooler" while I was running :)

Just a short jog, with three hill repeats thrown in.

Now to do a bit of packing, and then a one hour phone call with our event consultant.

See everyone in Laramie tomorrow!

Rode the usual loop, by myself this time. Some thoughts than wandered through my head: the unexpected ending of my last book; which weeds thrive in a drought and which don't; did we miss a new "Inspector Lewis" episode last night; the benefits of sun tunnels; how weird it is to see the leaves turning color in August; remember to email Corey; and I gotta fix the downstairs toilet. Tonight.

Frolicing in the ocean. It's been many years since I did this. Good thing my 8 yo neice was there to remind me of the basics. Fun.

After my workout, I joined eelgrassman, mean gene, Dick, Spike and Jenny (who had done a trail run) for a delicious burger at Dempseys. It was Pete's turn to feel the pain tonight.

Tomorrow, we're heading to Montauk, Long Island, for the Jones family vacation. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone. And daily high temps of 77 degrees.

Nordic track 30:00 [2]

Dinner tonight at Ed and Pam's to welcome our new Mongolian "cousin" to KU. Zorig will be studying aerospace engineering, just as Idree did. Zorig is really funny and engaging. It will be nice to have him around for the next four years.

I did some "circle" training at SMP tonight. I was tired from yesterday, and it was a humid 90 degrees, so I didn't push the pace as much as I had planned. Lots of folks out using the park, which is always nice to see.

Yeah, I'm finally seeing some progress on my long runs. I was able to jog up most hills, and my watch hardly ever had to remind me to speed up. And my legs didn't get tired until the last 10 minutes.

But I got another stitch. This is weird: no stitches for years, then 2 in a month. I'm not buying the "new runner" or "shallow breather" arguments, for me. I haven't changed my running style for years. My current favorite is the carbohydrate theory. Both times, I had fairly large breakfasts within an hour before running. And the stitch came right after I took a drink of Gatorade (which is diluted; but still, is mainly carbohydrate). I have been drinking Gatorade on all my runs, and I will continue to do so. But I will cut back on the pre-run breakfasts.

Nordic track 22:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (12:00 @2)

Just a little bit of tracking on a planned easy day.

The other day, I was giving Jenny a ride to the restaurant after O training. We were changing at the car, and talking about shoes, and I got distracted. I knew I had not taken my orthotics out of my O shoes and transferred them to my new shoes. But what I didn't realize until the next morning was that I had not put my O shoes into the car at all. I think I left them in the parking lot, near the driver's door.

Drove back to the lot at 7 am, but the shoes were gone. I have contacted campus lost and found, but I have little hope. I'm really mad about losing the expensive, custom orthotics. I've been very good about wearing them all the time over the last three years. Quite mad at myself that I didn't follow my usual procedure and move them to the next pair of shoes.

So today, I went and tried the Dr Scholl's thingy that tells you which of their inserts to buy. I stepped on the foot pads, and the lights were blinking but never settled. So the machine asked me: are you still wearing your shoes? I said no. It tried again. No luck. Then it asked: do you weigh less than 135 pounds? Made me smile, and helped alleviate a little bit of my sadness. Once I said, yes, the program worked fine.

Jenny B has arrived! Jenny is a student at Uppsala U who will be studying at KU this year. So we had a welcome event on campus tonight, and ran last year's Geo Awareness Week course. Good to see Gene, Fritz and Pete again. Nice dinner with everyone after.

Unbeleivable! It was 75 degrees today! In August! in Kansas! At the end of the day! And I rescheduled my usual Wednesday night training for Monday this week. At first I was bummed to be working indoors, but when I mentioned it to my trainer, he took some pieces of equipment up to the glass lobby, opened all the doors, and we worked "outside". It was great.

Did my own version of "trail O" today. I drew a course on the Clinton trails, and navigated from point to point (staying on trails the whole way). This was good practice for me, because I tend to space out on trails and lose track of where I am. I tried to concentrate today and keep contact on the map.

There was a kid's fishing clinic at Lake Henry today. It was great to see many folks outside. But because of the event, I had to park in a different location than I planned. I ran my course from 7-1-2-3-4-5-6.

cycle 36:00 [2] 6.44 mi (5:35 / mi) +26m 5:31 / mi

Another perfect summer evening, so I hopped on my bike for a ride along the usual route.

Bird sighting, not quite up to Gail-standard: I saw a yellow parakeet. In a cage. Hanging from the handlebars of a bike. The bike was moving, and the rider seemed to be in control.

Question: what is the proper bike trail etiquette? I said Hi to someone as I passed them on the way out. Do I have to say Hi again as we pass each other on the way back?

Very happy that Mike is coming home tonight. But I guess that means I have to stop sleeping in the middle of the bed :)

OMG, it was only 83 degrees today! Had to run outdoors. So I stopped at Kill Creek on the way home, and ran a sprint course that Mike had drawn for me. I pushed hard, but had to slow down sometimes just to think. No big errors. So fun to run after work again.
