Last warm night this week, and last week before it's dark after work. Had to go for a bike ride while I could (I'm a fair-weather biker; no cold, dark rides for me). There were a ton of folks out tonight, mostly joggers,

Well, this wasn't a good plan. We got home late-ish last night from the Night O, and then had to be up early-ish (for me, very early for Mike) for our MTB O in Lawrence this morning. Mike put out the markers and I worked registration.

After everyone started, I came home and decided what to do. I really wanted to nap. But it was a beautiful fall day, and I need to put in 5 hours this week, so I knew I should go for a run. I would regret it if I wasted this chance. But I was tired. But if I napped now, it was going to be in the 80s this afternoon, which would be a miserable time to run.

So I drank some tea (for the caffeine) and went to Clinton. My plan was 30 minutes out and back one direction, then another 30 minutes in the other direction. When I got to the halfway point, I was dragging, stumbling over my feet and un-motivated. I decided to push on for another 15 minutes. I made it another 5, and then started walking. Turned around and walked it in for a total of 45 minutes. Just not into it today, no surprise. Lack of sleep all week, on top of a long day on my feet yesterday. Not a good combination.

Started the orange course at Ft Leavenworth. It was tough because the map is a work in progress, and today's map was a copy of a print out. I got confused near 4, and thought the border of the parking lot was a fence symbol. And I just lost focus. Took too long to figure it out and relocate.

At this point, I was really hot (it was in the 80s) sand distracted by all the night O prep work I needed to do, so I just cut the course short. my route

Putting out markers for the night O. Realized pretty quickly that I had designed a course that was way too long. I had forgotten that the scale was 1:15. Also, Mike and I were hard pressed to get all the controls out in time. So we dropped 8 of the 20 controls. Which was just enough for one person to sweep in an hour, and everyone else seemed to have fun. It was great to pair with Ft Leavenworth Adventure Series to put on these two events. Both sides got better attendance than we would have by ourselves. And it split up the work. We will do this again next year.

Beautiful evening for a bike ride. Also fun to see everyone in a good mood, just because of a baseball team. Still seems surreal to say "Royals" and "World Series" in the same sentence :)

Fun day. Started by working registration at the mountain bike-O event. Nice to see three newcomers.

Then I met a friend for lunch and a movie. Came home to watch some football and hang out with Mike.

Then some delicious Mike-made pizza, and a bit or workout in the basement.

Will finish with some Inspector Lewis (or is it called Inspector Hathaway now??)

Local PTOC event. Too soon to go into the woods, so we stuck to fields and trails. Course was more like a sprint or a yellow course. Black overprinting (why???) made it hard to read sometimes. The first control was missing. I looked around a bit. Mike finally found it high in a bush. Navigation was fine but my legs were really tired from weights this week. Never felt good while running. Nice day, fun lunch afterwards.

Talked to my therapist about the set back last weekend (lots of painful moments when I would suddenly tweak my shoulder) probably due to inactivity, travel and skipped PT exercises. Also started new exercises to increase my range of motion behind my back, which hasn't improved much in recent weeks.

Updated log entries from the weekend with notes and routes. I still can't access my DOMA site (our router has blocked the site; who knew that routers could just decide to block a specific site, all on their own???) so I just have grainy jpg for now.

EDIT: I took down the map photos, because I couldn't 't figure out how to let you see them, but not all my other photos. I'll fix DOMA soon.

NAOC Sprint. I was nervous about screwing up today. I really wanted one clean race for the weekend. I had an early start, so I warmed up and arrived at the start about 10 minutes ahead of schedule. Only to find out that there would be a 30 minute delay. So I hung out, waited, and then warmed up again.

Got the map at the start, and it was huge (11X17). This was a long sprint course (too long; winning time was 18 min) so I knew I couldn't run all out for this distance. Settled in to a comfortable pace, and was able to hold that (for the times I was running)

Big mistake at 2, when I didn't see the gray wall and thought that the center of the circle was on the inside corner of the fence (which would have been a way cooler, and trickier, control location). When I missed it, it took me too long to decide how to relocate; need to practice that for sprints.

Huge mistake at 7. I saw the trail option to the control but once again I decide a straight line route would be OK. Not. Did not figure out which trail I hit first, kept thinking I was looking for a rootstock at the end of a thicket (instead, the whole green blob was the rootstock, which they had mentioned in meet notes).Wandered around and finally found a rootstock that was my 86. Punched and left. Hit a trail way too soon, and then the trail forked. Whoa, something is really wrong here! Go back and check that control code. It was 89 !!! Whew, I dodged a bullet here (yes, I know, I should have caught it the first time....) Ran back and finally found a few other folks who led me into 7. Total disaster, once again.

Rest of the course was fine. Pleased that I was able to run a steady pace, and pain free. But again, super mad at myself for such a huge, preventable mistake.

Enjoyed hanging out and chatting with everyone after the race. Spectating as the elites finished was also cool. Too bad we had to leave early, so we missed the team relays.

Thanks to Ottowa for a fine weekend.

Long course, NAOC

Slept a long time, but not restfully. I was anxious and nervous before the start today, and I had to work hard to get myself relaxed and focused. And I did a pretty good job at that.

Had a bit too much adrenaline at the start and did not see the trail past the marker, so I stupidly went through the woods and missed. Hit the trail and relocated just fine.

After that,I was more conservative with route choices, and took trails most of the way. I had a good run to 3, even though some of it was through the woods.

I worked hard to keep track of the trails as I left 5. Had some trouble with the small trails around 7, and then couldn't keep a straight line to 8.

But I was moving well and felt good and focused. I was shocked as I got near the finish and saw my time; this was fast! (It helped that this was a very short "long" course. The winning time was off)

I came in, quite pleased with my run. Then downloaded and saw "MP": I had skipped 6 !!!!

The last time I skipped a control was 2001. Why now???
I was so mad at myself. And disappointed. How hard is it to keep track of which number you're on? I know I planned a route from 5 to 6. My best guess is that I was using my magnifier to keep track of all the trails after 5, and since I wear it on my left hand, it probably was centered around 7. The attackpoint for 6 would also work for 7, so that's what I did.

Looking at Kissy's splits, I estimate that my time would have been 58 minutes on the full course, which would have been a good result. Oh well.

orienteer race 55:59 [3] 2.9 km (19:18 / km)

Middle course, NAOC. After shopping for clothes and getting a rental e-punch, I had to get my head into the game. I figured this would be good practice, to see how I could deal with strange circumstances. They had a long walk to the start, plus a great warm-up area with small map. Both of those helped me get focused for this race.

I took it really slow and easy to the first 3 controls, because it was hard for me to read this map (kept seeing things that were just under 2.5 meters, and therefore, not mapped). But I was clean.

From 3 to 4 I got cocky, and thought I could just wing it through the woods (instead of taking the safe route around on the trails). I wandered, slowly, crossed a trail (but didn't stop to consider) and finally stopped when I hit a hill. Stood still and began to guess where I was. Confirmed when I went around the hill and found my marker for 5. Duh! At least I could now follow the elephant trail back to 4, and then back to 5.

As a result of this huge mistake, I was too cautious later, and took the trail to 12 on purpose, to attack 11. Probably unnecessary.
Way down on the results today. Need to focus better tomorrow.

Since my Garmin had not yet arrived, I had to do the old-fashioned system: draw my course with a red pen. Not entirely sure where I went from 3 to 5, so that's a dotted line

Up early to travel to Ottawa. So excited for these races. 35+ women in F45! Again, my goal is three clean races. And have lots of fun!

Note

Travel woes continue. Unexpected long security lines. Was told to stay in line, all was fine with our flight. Not. Seats were given away. Rebooked on much later flight, arriving in YOW at 11:30 pm. Ugh.

Note

Survived our long layover in Newark. Will board for Ottawa soon, be in Arnprior about 1AM. Key question: will our luggage be waiting for us? (It left KC on original flight)

US Champs, Middle distance

I really wanted to get back into the groove, and have a clean race. Went really slow to the first control, and happily, things just clicked after that.

Small bobble at 9 when I stupidly got pulled off by others towards the powerline.

And a very silly bobble at 12, when I misread the feature as a boulder rather than knoll. There was a very visible statue, and I ran right to it. No marker! Where am I? Stepped out to the road to confirm I was at the right corner, looked at the control description and Duh! Back to the knoll.

Pushed into the finish and stood there catching my breath. After the heart rate slowed a bit and I started thinking again, I realized: that was a good run! I was so happy. Lately I have had real issues with middle courses. This felt good.

Until Kissy beat me my 19 seconds :)

Nah, it still felt good!

My route

Nice weekend, good course, good organization. Great to visit with Raymond and Jenny on Fri night, and Peter, Gail, Phil and Kris on Sat night. Fun but brief breakfasts with Carl and Ethan, and Eileen and Rick. Even got to chat with Valerie and Cristina for a few minutes. Real fun to catch up with Dan Ellsworth, who was so incredibly helpful to me when I visited Alaska in 1989. And 2.5 good races for me. Such fun.

Not so good today. Lost focus, and lots of time, on two controls. Was very tired by the end. Beautiful day to be out in the woods, though. Track, map and more details later.

Edit: My route

4: I planned to cut through the saddle to the north of where I actually ended up (couldn't figure out why I was in such crappy woods, and hit the trail further south than I expected. But didn't really get it until I downloaded my track). Left the trail to attack the control, but I couldn't differentiate the thicket from the rest of the green. Wandered around in the crap, and then took a good look at the map, and finally saw the little stream in the circle. So I looked for the stream and followed it into the control.

6: I was surprised that this was down, instead of up (this should have been a hint that I was getting sloppy). But I slowed down when I realized I didn't know exactly where I was. Stopped and looked around, and luckily saw a flash of orange to my left. At this point, another (fast female) orienteer passed by me, and she had missed the control. I felt smug that I had seen it and she hadn't. DING! Big sign that Mary is about to make a mistake.

7. I thought 7 was further away from the base of the hill, so I decided to just go straight at it. Duh! Wandered too far, finally had to go back to the hill and re-trace my steps. Saw lots of orienteers coming towards me, so I knew I was getting close. Finally made it to the big mucky marsh, but was rewarded with a person at the water stop who handed me a cup of water! How novel!

Rest of the course was OK, but slow. I was really tired at the end, stumbling over my own feet, and had a hard time keeping a straight line. Was pretty bummed at the finish, that I had two big mistakes, which I know are problems for me (wandering; and being affected by others) but I only seem to recognize AFTER the fact. Must learn to stop and adjust right after they occur!

Edit: My route. I had a few bobbles but I guess I kept a consistent speed throughout the race.

Easy day, getting ready for the weekend. I have no expectations for my own performance in terms of placing. My only goal is three clean races. Which will be very hard, given my recent track record. But I have been working on my focus, and techniques to deal with distractions. And now I'm ready to put them into action. So, we shall see.

One unexpected wrinkle: I may have to deal with fatigue. I had originally been booked on a 1:30 pm flight out of KC (yeah for sleeping in!) which went through Chicago onto Rochester. Arrive at 6 pm, with plenty of time to prepare for the weekend. But 10 minutes ago I got an email from Southwest: they cancelled my flight! Ugh! Only re-booking option for tomorrow (Fri options were too late) was to leave at 7:30 AM, and fly through Orlando! That makes it a 7 hour travel day, instead of 4. This sucks.
