run/walk 2:00:00 [3] 10.88 km (11:02 / km) +117m 10:28 / km

Out at Clinton enjoying the cooler temperatures.

I planned to jog/walk the whole 2 hours but my legs were completely dead. So I only jogged through 1.5 hours (4 min jog/1 min walk). Then I did a brisk hike for the last 30 minutes.

I saw 4 deer close to the trail who were in no hurry to move off. The last time I saw this, was when SMP was getting over-run with deer. I think it's time for a deer cull at Clinton.

Note

We have been having problems uploading our Quickroute maps to the Domo archive recently. It keeps saying the file is too big, even though we have loaded larger files in the past. The only way I can post it is to reduce the size and image quality way down (which is why this image from today's race is so bad).

This did happen right after we got a new printer/scanner, so I assume that is the problem. I am scanning at a low resolution to avoid monster file sizes, but that doesn't seem to help.

Any other ideas?

orienteer race 28:46 [4] 3.1 km (9:17 / km) +13m 9:05 / km

Sunflower State Games, Long course, Washburn University

I ran this unofficially, since I had glanced at the courses in advance, and mainly because I wanted the new-to-O and very enthusiastic 16 year old girl to win a trophy. But I also wanted to see if I could beat her. She did win the trophy and I did beat her :)

I was pleased with my run, considering I had been working at the event all morning and had no warm up. My brain wasn't into it for the first few controls, and my body started to die at the end. But I only made small bobbles (a silly 90 degree error late in the course, some hesitations reading the map)

We had a great turnout (more and more each year) and the weather was as good as could be expected in Kansas in July. Paul C had set some very nice courses. Thanks to MeanGene, Spike, rneuburger, possum and Mike Shiffman, Pat Slusher, Blair Sutton and George Pogge for all the help.

Lunch at the Burger Stand with the whole gang, followed by a peek inside Blair's used ambulance now becoming a camper van. Very cool!

Fun local event tonight. Mike set an informal score O course (print your own map) where you had to answer a question (multiple choice) about each location. We had a good turn out, including Fletcher visiting from Salt Lake City. I did well, except for fumbling at the first control with the map and pen, etc. Didn't have to go all the way to 3 before I could read the sign, and made a small mistake getting to 8 (ironic, because that is Mike's mom's house :)

Dinner with Blair and Mike after.

run race 17 [5] 0.1 km (2:50 / km)

Sunflower State Games
100m
17.52

They tried something different this year at the SSG track event, with some events on Fri night and the rest on Sat morning to try to avoid the heat. A nice idea but we're in the middle of an excessive heat wave, so it was still 36c when I ran.

I felt weird coming into this race, not as prepared or excited as usual. Don't know why. I also haven't been sleeping well lately. Guess my bad result is not a surprise.

Warm up went well, since I had written down the times from last year to help me gauge when I would start. Warmed up while all the young kids sprinted (there were 3 heats each of boys and girls under 8 for instance). By comparison, there were only 8 women, total, over age 30. This event definitely draws a younger crowd.

I was prepared for the chattiness before the start. This event seems to draw that, so I joined in. Definitely not my usual game face before the race, but I still started well.

And then I ran out of steam. This time it was about 60-70 meters. I even thought for a fraction of a second about stopping my sprint form and just running (at least my legs were asking me to do that). But I saw another woman catching up to me, and then passing me, so I tried desperately to push and hang on. Which never works, of course. I finished second in my heat (only woman in F50-54).

My last three races have all been in very hot conditions, and in all three I have gotten tired before the end of the race. The heat is going to always be there, so I just have to learn to deal with it. The getting tired part is harder . Is it lack of training? Or is my age finally catching up with me?

I was working at home today and thought it would still be OK to run at 10:30 or so.
It was not. Temp was already 36C.
I shuffled around in bits of shade at Holcom and I felt terrible the whole time.

OK event at Overlook. Not too hot this morning

Worked registration and gave beginner's briefings before heading out on Gene's "confusion" course. Many markers, had to pay attention. I made more mistakes than I wanted, usually because I mis-remembered the control number or ran too far. Saw I could just make it under 39 minutes (10 min/k) if I pushed hard from the last control. Nearly killed me but I made it. This was lots of fun (I rarely get to run along the shoreline) and he did a good job of giving us the hills in the beginning and the confusing trails later.

Two loops with map exchange. Second course is hand-drawn on this map.

I stopped by the Corps office this morning to finally meet the ranger (Samantha "Sam" Jones) who helps us with all of our event permits. We had a good discussion about getting women involved in outdoor sports (she runs a program aimed at women in MTB) and how OK and the Corps can continue to work together. So glad we have this good relationship!

Since I was at the Corps, it was easy to go for a run right after the meeting. It was getting hot already, but the shaded trails were really nice. Trails are hard-packed already this summer; it's been very dry.

My legs are super tired from the past three days of exercise and really sore for some reason. So I decided to take it easy on the legs today. Mike drew me a control picking course on his newest map (which is still in progress) and I did a brisk walk. I tried to keep moving the whole time and to practice identifying three things in/near the circle. I did OK, but one lack of focus going to 11
