Laramie Day 1 RMOF Granite Planite Middle course: Green

So nice to be back in Laramie. Since it was my first day at altitude, and I hadn't been on a Laramie map in three years, I knew I had to walk this course. I did jog a few times down hill, and from the Go control, but that was all.

I worked hard on my concentration, and I often talked to myself out loud (describing features I would see, which control number I was looking for, etc). And that worked very well. Small bobble on 8 and 17, and some hesitation as I approached 2 and saw two women talking/looking at their map as if they were not at the control.

Lots of fun on the course, and lots of fun talking with all my friends who I haven't seen in way too long.

Gene set a course on a map in progress of Sesquicentennial Park. I had not run on portions of this map in more than 20 years, I think. It was a good warm up for Laramie. I was running in unfamiliar areas and I practiced how to react when I made mistakes or got tired.

A lot of compass legs, which I screwed up. The vegetation is much thicker around 2 and 7. I chose to skip 5 because I know the area well and going up the hill just to turn around again did not appeal to me. Disappointed with the miss at 9 and picking the wrong feature (at first) when going to 13.

I planned to ride for an hour after work, but it was hot and windy and I was dreading the hills. So I changed the plan to only 30 minutes on the flat, then finished with some exercise in the cool basement while listening to podcasts. Much better!

Up early to catch the train into Darmstadt. Walked around the HQ and then sat in a conference room for a few hours. A very long day.

Walked around town a little bit in the evening, trying to find a good restaurant. Found one but all the outdoor tables were reserved. So I ended up back at my hotel. Food wasn't anything special, but I was able to sit outside on the plaza and watch some pedestrians and skateboarders.

Street O in Ottweiler Germany (my SILs hometown).

Mike made this map for me, and I drew a course. It was fun to run all around the hills. I thought the path a bit east of 6 might go all the way through, to help me get to 7, but the map said no. So I went all the way around. As I got close to 7, I did see the path came through, so I took it to 8 and back towards 9. It was fun to see all the different types of houses in this town.

Note

Walked around the Memorial Park in Berlin to see where the wall had been. It was a very moving exhibit.

Then flew from Berlin to Frankfurt, took a train to Ottweiler to visit my brother and sister-in-law.

A short shuffle along some side streets to an exercise path near the river, as recommended by the hotel clerk. I had to turn around as soon as I got to the river, in order to meet my manager on time for dinner. She praised my dedication to getting exercise but I had to admit that part of the motivation was being able to log some training from my first trip to Berlin. AP works in mysterious ways!

Finally back in Dublin! Spent a few hours walking all around my old haunts. Some may not know that my first O club was DUO. I didn’t orienteer today, but I did walk around my old neighborhood, campus and downtown. Most buildings are still the same, but Dublin has a lot more bikes, cars, tourists and ethnic restaurants now than in 1984. I had a great day reliving old memories.

I have plans to orienteer several times this upcoming week, but I'm on a work trip, and you never know what may happen. So I did a quick loop through the neighborhood this morning, just in case.

Putting out the markers for today's event.

We're getting a decent turn out of newbies, especially from Topeka. Who knew that was our target audience? Also, we are starting to see more women attend. I have been focused on marketing to women this year (and for the next two). So far, held women-only traininings. and every single event/Facebook post etc has to have a woman in the photo.

And suggestions for what we should try in 2019?
