cycle 30:00 [2]

Magnus's mom lent me a bike to use during Oringen. I haven't ridden in 10-12 years, so this was a real workout. I felt it in my legs right away--different muscles than running, obviously. We rode to the event center and back.

This bike is as old as me (or older) and weighs a ton. It reminds me of the Wicked Witch of the West's bike!!

Two sessions at Lunsen today. The first was a leisurely map hike with Mike, who helped me make sense of the Swedish mapping style, and point out when I was standing in a "marsh".

Then, this eveing, I did part of the course that Magnus set up to imitate Soderhamn. I walked it, but tried to imagine it was a competition. I did OK, although I'm not sure I really found the dot marsh next to the dot knoll. It was fun to move around on this beautiful, detailed map. I'm getting excited about the competition beginning on Sunday.

Made it to Uppsala yesterday. Went for a short map hike by walking off Magnus and Sanna's back porch onto a map. Very cool.

Today Mike and I played tourist in Stockholm, as Mike showed me some of his favaorite haunts. We alternated walking around museums with sitting for awhile, so the legs wouldn't get too worn out.

One more day, and I should be over the jet lag.

Note

Off to Sweden for the 5 days. I'll be running D40kort; Mike is in H40 and Magnus and Sanna are running H/D35.

All of my training this year has been in preparation for this event. I feel fitter than I have in years, although I have a long way to go. However, I hope my improved fitness will allow me to complete 5 courses without making mistakes due to fatigue.

My goal for the 5 days is to hit all my controls cleanly (less than a 5 minute mistake). This may seem pretty easy to accomplish, but not for me. First, I need to stay concentrated through 60+ controls; that will be hard. Second, if I should happen to stray off course, I need to admit it and relocate quickly. This has been my downfall in the past, and I hope to do better at this event.

Back to the Swedish forests, good friends, cool temps and thousands of orienteers in the woods--this is going to be fun!

Weight = 0.900 M :)

Moving around on the cross country course at Bonner. I felt some twinges in my knee at the end of the run yesterday, so I wondered what would happen today. I felt another twinge or two in the beginning, but they went away. So I kept on running.

Last training before Sweden. Now my knee and ankle will get a rest for a day or two.
