Day one at Texas. I was "competition" rusty; felt disorganized in the morning, lack of routine leaving controls, distracted by other runners. But it was my first meet in more than three months...
Weather was warm (50s) but rainy. Perfect.
Overall, not a great day. Physical was good; I pushed as hard as I could, ran quite a bit. Navigation was so-so. Not so good at reading ahead; pretty good at planning routes.
My main goal for the year is to be consistent, and not lose big chunks of time on single controls. I missed 4 on the first pass, and went almost down to the lake. Made myself stop, look at the map. I pretended to relocate, but I just wandered some more. Finally admitted I was wandering, went back to the lake and really, truly relocated. Once I KNEW where I was, I set right off towards the control. I estimated that I last 4 or 5 minutes; splits show that I lost more than 8 minutes. Uuggghhh! Exactly what I did not want to do.
Missed 11 (but I relocated well this time) and lost some time due to bad route execution on 12.
Third of three on F45. Badly beaten by the youngsters and men.
Must comment on the course: excellent use of the terrain, great variety of legs in skill and distance. Both Anna and I thought the same thing when we saw the long trail run in the middle of the course: there will be lots of control picking at the end. And there was. Fun.
Note: bad day for consistency (24.9) and time lost (21.1)
