orienteer 1:00:00 [2]

First training of the camp, at Hawn. Joe B and I went out together. We alternated leading into each leg; one had the map with the control, the other had a blank map. Most of the time, we discussed how to approach the leg, or what we would see, or how we were relocating. Other times, we didn't say much. It was good training to have to explain yourself to someone else. But I think Joe was frustrated with my slow pace :)

Mini training. Mike set up a three-control course around the parking area, with only flagging tape. I watched several others run the course (and search everywhere for #3). I decided to see how fast I could go, without even looking at the map. Too long for me to sprint all-out the whole way, but I was pushing it.

Later, Tom showed us all how it really should be done.

Second training at Hawn, yellow/orange course. I tried to practice moving quickly and smoothly from control to control. Passed through a few sections of forest that were so beautiful I questioned if I was truly in Missouri in August. Why did I leave St Louis, and move to KC???? (Oh yeah, I remember :)

Third training, at Cliff Cave. The woods were thicker here, so I stayed on the trails the whole time. Started OK, but then I got tired, and decided to walk to 5, and then cut the course short.

Just for you, Tom.

run/walk 2:00:00 intensity: (32:00 @2) + (1:28:00 @3)

Mike and I went for a long run at Smithville Lake this morning. I did my usual 8/2 repeats. Felt pretty good (cool temps and recent light training schedule certainly helped). Legs a bit tired and heavy at the end.

Thank goodness the Olympics are ending; I can finally get enough sleep. Ever since le Tour, and then the Olympics, I have been staying up too late. Good thing the US Open finals are played early in the morning :)

Note

Some maps and a photo, for those who are interested. US Champs day 1 and day 2 quick routes. And the Jones family (minus brother Patrick) in Halifax. My sister Kathleen is to my right (when looking at the photo). The other women in the back row are sisters-in-law. Parents, niece, nephew, sister and brothers in the front row.
