PTOC event at Watkins Mill, red course
What fun for me, to finally run on this map! We've used it for three years, but I kept missing each event, for some reason or other. So nice to have a new map, that I didn't know at all. Unfortunately, it was typical western MO terrain, with lots of thick stuff and thorns. I figured it was good practice, and makes me tougher. (Edit: I should note, that the terrain for our A meet, in eastern KS, is much better :)

There were a few places that were flat and open. It makes one feel fast (even if you aren't) to run through these areas; that was fun.

I messed up 2, and took a terrible route choice to 4: I never saw the trail to the west. Wonder if I folded my map over it? But ironically, my bad route choice meant I approached the control from a funny direction, and thus I saw the (misplaced) marker from below. Mike was not so lucky; he gave up after searching for a bit.

I thought 11 was misplaced, but it was just that the map is a bit funny in this area. The whole map is a bit funny; the contours definitely need to be updated to Lidar.

Tonight's torture move: side plank with arm elevated straight up from shoulder. And holding a 10 lb kettle ball. My wrist was the weakest link.

Orienteering practice at Clinton. I have noticed that I have difficulty attacking controls where I have to go up or down a hill on an angle. I tend to go straight up or down, instead. This can be OK it here is a catching feature, such as a trail, but it can be bad if I'm trying to go right to the control (such as control 3 at the Night O champs).

I also wanted to practice coming across a flat area and dropping down into the correct reeentrant system. SO I drew a course at Clinton. I took it very easy, and walked the whole way. But I tried to keep up the concentration and focus. It is evident that I need to practice this technique. Went straight up the hill at 3. But then I did better on 4, 5 and 6 (maybe shorter legs helps?) Glad I did this training today.

Spent some time exploring the map and the quarry after 7, just for fun. I hadn't been on this second of the map in many years.
