LAOC day 2. Right away this course was different, more technical and a bit rough (lots of deadfall on the early legs). I was not yet into the map, obviously, as I climbed the wrong hill on the way to 1, and took a while to admit it.

Still brain dead on the way to 2. How can one forget which reentrant you are moving along, and suddenly get it mixed up with another, smaller side reentrant? was almost at 2, convinced myself it was one reentrant too far, and I went back the way I'd come. Really? You would think I would get beyond such stupid self-delusional thoughts by now....

Three was a case of not reading the detail in the control circle, and that the control was not in the bottom of the reentrant, but up the hill.

After that I settled down a bit, but I was moving slow and hesitantly.

Was on track to 10, but I stayed too low, and spent too much time (again!) looking for the marker before bailing out to the trail.

10 to 11 was brutal. Was on all 4's a lot of the way up, and stopped often to rest.

Overall, I enjoyed this course more because it required more map reading than yesterday.

Thanks to LAOC for mapping this beautiful spot, and hosting a great event!

Day One, LAOC at Barton Flats. Nice to be in beautiful open woods, with cool temperatures. Not nice to be at altitude (7500 feet) and to make bone head mistakes. Courses were easy, due to so many trails. The map was very general, but I understand the club members had to step in at the last minute to update an inferior product from a paid mapper.

I was a little confused looking for clearings on my way to 1, and got suckered into looking at another control. Learned right away not to use clearings for navigation,as they were unreliable. Moved well for the next few controls, except for some momentary confusion on the way to 5, when I came upon the start and thought I was on the wrong road.

Did not see the easy route choice to 6 (down to first trail, follow trail to east). Instead I tried to go straight down and read off the trail junctions. Turned out to be a big mistake. The trails were hard to identify (saw more that I would have mapped) so I got very confused. Ended up near 9 (saw the marker, but never checked it since it obviously wasn't mine). Took WAY TOO LONG to relocate here; need to stop sooner and relocate. Not until I followed the trail to the west and saw the road did I finally figure out where I was. Lost about 12 minutes here :( But, on the other had, I had one of the fastest splits from 8 to 9, because I knew exactly where I was going :)

Tried really hard on the run in, but was beaten by 1 second (by two men). Some day....

Great location for the event, nice camp and social arrangements. Had a good long visit with disorienteer as we drove up to the camp on Friday, and lots of fun meeting new folks after the run on saturday. Good conversations all around.

stretch 1 [0]

erg 15:00 [2]

Squeezed in a bit of rowing between a hectic day at work (stayed late) and packing for the LAOC trip. Excited about orienteering in this cool area. And it's been a long time since I stayed in the camp on the map, which should be a nice relaxing weekend. Mike's not coming (I have more vacation time than him) so I'm looking forward to hanging out with disorienteer this weekend.
