orienteer 50:00 [1]

Training Day: Mike, Paul, Dick and I led an O skills workshop today. We had 9 people sign up, one had to cancel this week, and 3 didn't make the long drive over the slushy roads. So the 5 participants that showed up got very personal attention! I'm logging part of the time I was out in the woods.

Morning woods session: contour only map and route choice exercise. Note to selves: allow more time for contour only training at future events.

Afternoon woods session: map folding exercise; corridor O; 1 k test course to practice everything learned today.

Started and ended with map review and discussion (indoors). Needed to warm up after being outdoors most of the day; temp was steady at 25.

Very successful workshop, I think.

Sprint training night. Started with warm up exercises in the basement, then headed over to west campus for the running. I did 5 x 1 min "run as fast as you can without loosing form". This is very hard: hard to judge effort, hard to do 5 reps. I had to stop a bit early on most reps. And really early on the 5th. Surprisingly, I felt pretty good as I pushed it tonight.

Local PTOC event at Blue and Gray. Wonderful day, 55 degrees and sunny. Also fun to bring two new international visitors from Lawrence. Met Tom from the Netherlands and Jenny from Finland for the first time today, as we gave them a ride to the event. Fun conversations during the drive, plus at lunch with Gene after the run.

My plan to day was to take it easy (I have a slight cold) and concentrate the whole time. I give myself a C. Was trying to act cool in front of other folks as I breezed in and out of 2, and promptly went off in the wrong direction. Fortunately I caught myself pretty soon.

Was fairly confident of where I was as I approached 4, but was thrown off when Gene and I reached a big gully and there was no marker. I should have stopped and re-considered; I couldn't be that far off, since I was very confident just a few seconds before. But instead I did my usual jump to conclusion that I had gone too far, and I back tracked. Then wandered some trails for awhile, before coming to my senses at the top of the hill. Complete bone headed move.

Did OK on the rest of the course; it helped that the course was pretty easy today . route
