I drew a course on the Clinton contour map to practice rough compass, especially across fields or up and over a hill. The first part was on the mountain bike skills area, which has lots more trails and is filled with crappy woods. I struggled keeping a straight line, but I thought I had found 1, 2 and 3. As I approached 4, I realized I was pretty far off. Which immediately told me I must have missed 3.

After that I did better, and even spiked one or two. I did this whole exercise at a walk, because it was meant to be slow and accurate.

And then I downloaded my track and put it on the map. Boy, how embarrassing! I never got close to 2 or 3. I was SO off in my distance estimation, not to mention reading contours. Holy smokes! route

Short outing on west campus. Usually I see several deer out there, but tonight I only heard one and didn't actually see any.

One last day of the O-a-thon weekend. I went back to Kill Creek, to see how I messed up 3 and if I could do 8 better (compared to last week). Weather was quite different from yesterday: 30 degrees with a "strong breeze" from the north (I'd say it was a 6 on the Beaufort scale).

I tried a different route to 1 this time (it was slower but safer).
Found the trail junction (just past the stream) from 2 to 3, and saw how I had missed the one I wanted to take the first time . the I promptly forgot which cliff I was looking for, so I had to repeat the attack.

Missed the fence at 7 today (boy, I miss having markers in the woods :) but I finally understood the trail to 8 and hit the control cleanly.

Stopped at another control location (that I had picked out in advance) then 13 then into the finish. This last bit was rough, heading right into the wind. I used my map to protect my face. But I was rewarded with my first bald eagle sighting of the year as I crossed the dam.
