I took it easy yesterday, made sure I sat down a lot. Also went for a short walk with Erin to stretch the legs. But I must not have drunk enough water, because I got a bad charley horse in my right calf during the night. It was still tender to the touch this morning, so I I iced it and took ibuprofen. Then headed to the race.

I had to walk a few blocks from parking, and my calf felt better and better as I moved. It was a cool scene inside the stadium: real press photographers with giant lenses; race replays on the big screen; kids shouting encouragement to parents and grandparents; amazingly fit older adults. It was fun to be part of it.

I wasn't super nervous at the start, which may not be a good thing. I didn't feel I was pushing as hard as I could at the start. I got tired in the middle, which is not good, and was losing form at the end. Bummer.

I need to figure out how my body needs to warm up for these races. I think I need to do more.

Amazing time for the winner in my age class : 14.09

Erin was cheering me on and posting photos to Facebook : how nice! We sat and watched a few more races, then decided to go orienteering. My calf started to stiffen up, just in the short time we were sitting. That was weird because I didn't feel it during warm up or the race.

MNOC was hosting an adventure race in Willow River park in WI today. They very nicely let Erin, Robin and I crash for the "rogaine" section. I started off with some jogging, but my calf was tight, and it was hot and sticky, so I ended up walking a lot. Plus the woods were pretty thick. I wouldn't have gone through these woods at home, but somehow, it was easier to make myself go through the woods in a new area. But some of the grassy areas were a pain; I decided to just wave at 29 rather than cross the field.

Big mistake on 33. Gave up and started in (since I thought I would be late to meet Robin and Erin) but then realized where I had been, and that I was passing the correct location for 33, but I didn't have the energy to look for it again.

Fun outing. Also fun to see the surprise on the MNOC folks faces when they saw me. Nice chatting with Justin, Mike, Julia, et. al. at the finish.

Mike set some courses for me on campus. First up, just a few controls on sidewalk junctions. I really don't think I took that route from 5 to 6. The I walked up the hill to the start of the second course.

orienteer 13:54 intensity: (2:57 @1) + (9:53 @2) + (1:04 @3) 1.58 km (8:48 / km) +28m 8:05 / km

Line O on campus, Hard to contour around between the stairs (I went more straight). I know I went around the tree just west of Potter's Lake. Only mistake was near the very end, when I couln't tell if I was supposed to be on the sidewalk or the grass.
