PTOC event at Crowder State Park, 14C and light rain

Fritz, Gene and I drove 2.5 hours to Crowder, just to run at a different type of terrain. I had been here once before, and knew that the contours were awful on this map, but I had a good run last time and I was looking for a repeat.

I tried hard to navigate well, by paying attention to my compass, looking ahead, and having a picture of the control circle. I also tried to keep moving. Garmin says I "stood still" a lot, but that was just my pace up the steep wet hills :) I did walk most of the course, rarely jogging. Except for one or two patches of really nice woods where I got to say "wheeee" as I ran down hill. The trails were gloppy messes, so they were no help. I probably should have pushed the pace a bit harder. Gene beat me on the finish split :(

Biggest mistake was leaving 6. I was trying to find the trails along the western side of the spur, but I was just confused by the contours in this area, and I didn't figure out my mistake until I hit the park boundary. It probably would have been faster to go along the eastern side of the spur and climb at the end, but I decided I wanted to attack from above.

The hills at the end (12-13-14) killed me.

Nice to see Grafton Potter and Joe Barrett at the event, and to spend quality time with Fritz and Gene.

Note

A most excellent Friday night. Got our taxes done, followed by dinner and shopping at IKEA.

Note

Crappy day at work, dealing with one annoying co-worker (who influences the whole company). Good thing I had a facial scheduled for this evening.

erg 20:00 [2]

Rowing back and forth in the basement. A little boring and repetitive.

yoga 30:00 [1]

My trainer and his wife had a new baby last week, so he is taking this week off. Which meant I had to train myself. I didn't push as hard as he would, and I stuck to free weights and things I knew how to do.

Acting my age and dancing to the "80's Cardio" station on Pandora.

picking up some markers from the intro course at Rockcrusher

orienteer 15:17 [3] 1.36 km (11:15 / km) +43m 9:42 / km

Mike and I went to Rockcrusher to pick up the last of the markers. Very warm and very windy.

I decided to run the last three legs that I skipped yesterday, just to see what my time would have been. I figured it was decent test: I would have fresher legs, but I would have to stop at each marker, wrap it up, and pull the stand out of the ground. and then run to the next control with the whole thing in my hand. I also picked an intro course marker, on my way to my 7.

cycle 23:00 [3] 5.8 km (3:58 / km) +13m 3:55 / km

Such a warm day, I needed to get some more outdoor exercise. But the wind was insane, so I only went out for a short time, and stuck to the flat, wooded areas near home.
