Ft Leavenworth event. I decided to do the long (Olympic) orienteering, mostly because I wanted to go to new places and challenge myself with having to read the USGS map (30 years old) part of the time. Had an adventure punching #4 (hanging off a cliff, had to pull it up to punch). Did a few more controls on the O map, then switched to the USGS. It was difficult, made me switch gears. I had also forgotten to bring the clue sheet for this section, so I slowed down a lot in the circle, not sure what I was looking for. I was bummed that I had been to these sections before (just hadn't recognized that before I went) I had only planned to be out for 90 minutes, so I had to hustle back, double-tracking areas I had already been. Bad route planning today.

Lots of people earned their jerseys today. Great turn out. Sandy lost her phone on the course, asked to borrow my phone so she could call it and try to find it. We went home, and she called an hour or so later and said she had found it! fell out of a big new hole in her pocket.

She came over for dinner and a movie tonight. I sewed up her pocket, she cooked dinner, and we watched Hidden Figures. It was good but a bit slow and predictable.

Note

Severe weather season has arrived in Kansas. Yesterday, the roof at work was damaged in high winds. Knocked an AC unit loose, which hit a gas line, which led to us evacuating the building for 24 hours. Also had to shut down the servers, which stopped our manufacturing lines. Not good.

Tonight there are heavy thunderstorms in the area. Mike advised that I drive home a different route to avoid them. 99% of the drive was dry. As I arrived in Lawrence, I passed through a tiny but intense cell. One second, there was light rain. Next second, total blindness in the wind and rain. I slammed on my brakes (I was on a highway) and somehow steered toward the side. Could not see anything until I made out some grass under my tires. Sat there until the storm cell passed (which took only about 2 min). That was scary.

Found my HR strap and replaced the battery. Wasn't sure if the HR would work, but I really wanted to track my cadence, ground contact, and vertical oscillation. And they all worked! It was so nice. I had forgotten what it was like to have the data.

It was very windy tonight, so I ran alongside the alternative school building, using it as a windbreak.

cycle 1:00:00 [3] 15.73 km (3:49 / km) +31m 3:47 / km

Hot, hot, hot. And windy. But nice in the shade, and good to get out after work. Saw a few other riders, several families walking the dog and one runner. And a hawk with a snake in its mouth.
