orienteer 1:23:25 [3] 4.99 km (16:43 / km) +93m 15:18 / km

There was supposed to be a PTOC event today but they postponed it because they thought it would be too cold. Puh! I went out any way.

Couple of goals today: keep moving and avoid trails. I also gave myself only one chance to "find" the control. I made a choice and moved on, with no hunting around. I walked most of the way, just getting over my cold. And while I tried to keep moving, it may look like I stopped when I went up hills because I was moving so slowly! I did actually stop twice to tie a shoe and remove a thorn from my sock.

Didn't do too well on 2, and I kind of knew it at the time because the trails after didn't make sense. But I didn't figure it out when i "found" the control.

I missed 4 also. I can forgive myself for picking a different thicket, because there were lots of new trees and thickets in the field. But I should have picked the correct one based on where it was relative to the field edges.

This was fun training.

My trainer rescheduled our workout for Friday. I intended to come home and do some exercise, but then I didn't. Just relaxed at home with Mike and a glass of wine.

Travel day home. Left Mountain View, drove to Oakland, nonstop flight to KC, drive to Lawrence. Seems like a short trip (3 hour flight) but it took 9 hours. I had window seat and could enjoy the view, when I was awake. I definitely have a cold, so I slept a lot.

Kathleen and I headed down past San Jose. I dropped her off and she rode her recumbent bike to Calero Park, while I drove there and went orienteering. It has been years since I orienteered in the Bay Area. I had thought this would be a navigational training but I quickly decided this was going to be physical training.

I plodded my way through the grass (dried thistles) and the woods (tons of oak moths) and tried to keep on contours. I had a decision to make from 4 to 5 and decided to contour around. I wonder what a local would have chosen? Seems like I missed 6.

When I got to 7, I received a text from Kathleen that she had arrived, so I quickly ran back down hill (wwhhheeeee!)

Drove home, and met sister Susan and Mom for a Super Bowl Sunday at Kathleen and BJ's house. Susan made Cosmopolitans (my first ever) and we ate wings and chips. It was great. At some point, we watched a bit of the game on the computer, but it kept freezing up. We figured out who won, eventually. We were happy.

Started coughing that night, perhaps the beginning of a cold?
