Work is really stressful right now. Getting out helped, a little bit.
Wine helps more.

Re-run of a PTOC sprint from 2015. I ran hard, trying to make this feel like a race. I haven't been pushing lately, and I needed to get back in the groove.

The grass is not mowed this year, so I had to go around on 4, 6 and 7. I had to walk a few times, I am too out of shape. When I finished, I looked up my time from 2015 and was bummed to see it was 22:57. I thought I was moving better today.

Wanted along day on my feet but the trails would be too muddy, so I decided to do a line O on campus. Mike warned me about the inversion air quality, so I was prepared to stop if I had trouble breathing.

I started out pretty badly, but figured out my mistake in the middle of the field and corrected. The smoky air was not bothering me but my legs felt like dead weights. Another mistake at the far west end of the first big parking lot. I must have been distracted; I didn't know about the mistake until I did Quickroute.

We haven't updated the Daisy Hill map for several years and there has been major construction (and earth moving and building demolition). So I printed out a section of the the World's Largest O Map (attribution: This map was created by the o-map, the world's largest orienteering map. Join the community now at www.o-map.ch! © o-map, © Swisstopo, © Mapbox, © OpenStreetMap). This worked pretty well for the new buildings. but there is no vegetation, so I had to go around some hedges once or twice. Also, one fence around the ball diamonds and an unmapped major wall near the Burge Union caused some diversions from the line. I inexplicably drew the line down the middle of a major road sometimes; if no cars were coming I tried to stick to the line. Big mistake on the engineering quad when I mistook the road symbol for the wall symbol.
I was getting hot and tired now. I had planned to run most of this, but started walking a lot on this section.

I was getting really tired by now (even though I had planned to be out over an hour) and debated just heading straight home. But in the end, I finished the course. Much easier to go downhill. And I deliberately went through the secret passage in the Geological Survey building.

More bike O on West campus. I kept the "pavement only" rule. Part of the route from 4 to 5 was on an unmapped sidewalk.

I tried to make decisions on the fly but I did have to stop a few times. And I must have gotten tired at the end, because I made route choice errors getting to 12; and leaving 15 and 17.

I stopped on the way to 3 to answer a text from Sandy about plans for this weekend.

I needed a sense of adventure, so I headed to Lexington Lake for some O. I have only been to this park a few times and never in the summer. It was fun to see new areas, and I was pleased that my orienteering brain showed up too.

I wasn't sure what grass would be mowed and if the mountain bike trails would be in decent shape. There were fewer mowed areas than mapped, so I couldn't get to 2, 3, 4 or 7. The trails were in good shape, they cut down the vegetation on the sides.

I considered cutting through the woods a few times, but I only followed a deer trail to see if I could get to 7 and a dry stream bed to change trails on the way to 9.

By the end I slowed down to a walk because I was hot and tired. I also got distracted thinking about getting the flower "badge" and was looking for good sunflowers to pick. That's my only excuse for missing the finish.

Edit: i forgot to mention that I scared up a few deer. They all ran away quickly, like normal deer. The deer at Clinton are getting tame.

Sunflowers

I saw a lot of fishermen and dog walkers when I started. I didn't see any mountain bikers while I was out but there were lots in the parking lot when I finished.
