Event: Briones

Orienteering race 1:26:55 [5] 5.1 km (17:03 / km) +285m 13:19 / km
shoes: Inov 8

Briones is always a great physical challenge but not much of a technical one. Today was no exception. I made one error of about 2 minutes on the first control. After that everything was pretty clean if you can call any run at Briones clean. There is so much steep hill walking and steep contouring, usually walking, that it always feels that so much time is wasted it's I could only run. There was a point approachng control 7 that I stood there at least a minute while I contemplated which dangerous Slope to descend. I asked myself if I wanted to die falling down this ravine or die sliding down the one to the left. I slowly crept down the one to the left and survived to risk my life again on subsequent controls.

Physically I felt quite bad the first part of the course. My chest seemed like it was about to burst going up several hills. But felt better as I progressed. I guess a clean run counts, as I won Green by 8 minutes over Steve Haas.

The most enjoyable activity of the day was buying my new pair of Inov-8
OROC340s from Joe. Can't wait to try them out next week in the Maryland woods.

Running 48:19 [3] 5.0 mi (9:40 / mi)
shoes: adidas

The attempt was to run 50 minutes along the BART tracks. As I got to the tracks the path was closed off through Albany and El Cerrito for BART Earthquake reconstruction. Even though the reconstruction was not going to take place close to the dirt running path it was all fenced tightly. I had seen signs posted for the past few weeks but never bothered to read them. Now I read them and the construction will continue until September 2012! Yikes! my nearest dirt path run has been taken away from me for a year. So I was diverted out onto the roads trying to figure out where I could go to find some soft surface running trails. As I headed south into Berkeley I remembered an old railroad right of way that I had biked on a few years back. It was not a very good bike trail because of fences that had openings that bikes could not get through easily. But for runners it was OK. Ran along it all the way to University AV and then doglegged back home. Not ideal but at least most of the run was still on trails or grass. Went out in 25:09 and back in 23:10. Feeling better. Looking forward to the Green at Briones Sunday.
