An excellent day of orienteering. The first part of the course very steep. Had to stop several times on the way to six to let my heart rate level out. Made a slight error on control 7 when I left the road too early and went right of the flag. Everything else was a spike.

Boggs Long Course.
Arriving at the start glanced at my 18 year old base plate compass to see a large hole and no liquid. Matthias Kohler graciously lent me his thumb compass. Soon discovered that a thumb compass and gloves are not compatible. So I ditched the left glove. A few seconds later the start whistle blew. So I was rattled from the beginning. Very tentative on the first 4 controls. Leaving 4 went too far left and hit the trail at an unknown spot. Decided to go left on the trail to establish position. In about 20 seconds realized where I was and traced my steps back to the ride and down to the control (5). To the long control 6 made a route choice error and a navigation mistake. Back up to trail I had been on continued east for about 300m then cut through the woods. After thrashing around for a few minutes somehow wound up back on the same trail. (Blaming Matthias' thumb compass). Back on track the plan was to attack from the saddle SE of the control. Bad choice. Didn't read the map well enough to see the combination of steep, thick and rocky terrain. Should have sacrificed some distance and stayed higher.
Anyway was going slow enough to have no problem finding the flag.
After that decided to take my time and make no errors on the final 5 controls, which I accomplished.

Boggs Sprint Course. Walked the entire way until the finish chute debacle. Most everything was right one. Took the straight woods route to most controls, while the runners stuck to the trails. Decided to sprint to the finish and clipped a rock (splat). Just a few scrapes.
Like the fact that the woods routes were the best.
