Running (Treadmill) 32:00 [2] 3.0 mi (10:40 / mi) +486ft 9:15 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Evening treadmill workout at the Webster Rec Center. Pace was slow but I did some climb, starting at 1% and increasing up to 5%, then backing off a little towards the end of the workout.

Finally, a run! Nice day for it; temps in the mid 30's, little wind, road shoulders very clear of snow. Ran with Anne. A couple of times she did a walking break while I ran ahead and then backtracked to meet up with her again.

Downhill skiing 2:15:00 [2]

Third and last day at Jay. Once again, very nice weather; sunny until mid afternoon, moderate temps (started around 15 deg, ended up around 35). And once again, not real great skiing -- not too bad first thing when making fresh tracks in the corduroy, but things got icy fairly quickly as it got skied off. But still, a very enjoyable day.

GPS says 38.1 miles, 24,000 vertical feet.

Downhill skiing 2:00:00 [2]

More skiing at Jay Peak. Another nice day; sunny, little wind, but fairly cold.

Didn't start the GPS right away so I missed a run or two. It said we covered 30.4 miles and 19500 vertical feet.

Downhill skiing 2:00:00 [2]

Skiing at Jay Peak, VT. Nice but cold day -- started out around 0, ended up around 15. But sunny all day and little wind.

Not overly impressed by Jay as far as skiing does. Fairly steep with some interesting runs on the upper mountain, but then it really flattens out, with the last few hundred vertical feet involving going as straight as possible so as to not lose valuable speed. Plus, conditions weren't great. Groomed slopes were decent in the morning, but as they got more skied on, there were many hard packed/icy spots. But nice scenery and nice condo to stay in.

GPS said we covered 38 miles (including lift rides of course) and 24000 vertical feet.

Running 25:57 [3] 3.01 mi (8:38 / mi) +28ft 8:33 / mi
max:140 shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochist

A short but relatively fast (for me) run on a very nice afternoon. Hard to believe the contrast between yesterday's weather and today's. Actually the temp wasn't a heck of a lot different -- maybe upper teens yesterday and mid 20's today. But instead of overcast with 30-40 mph winds like yesterday, today had very little wind and bright sunshine.

With Homer. He hung in pretty well until the last half mile or so when he starting losing interest / dragging, but he made it OK, with some encouragement.

We're leaving tomorrow for a few days skiing at Jay Peak, VT, so I wanted to give myself and Homer a bit of a workout before we left him at the dog sitter's where he gets treated well but leads a pretty sedentary existence. And there's no telling if I'll have the energy for much running after skiing, so it may be my last run in a while also.

Late afternoon run with Anne; parked in the Bayside parking lot on Lake Rd, ran over to the Irondequoit side of the bay.

Walking (Dog walk) 30:00 [2] 1.8 mi (16:40 / mi)
shoes: Hiking boots

Rough estimate of mileage, didn't take GPS. Walked from home, to end of Woodland, then everything else was off road and mostly off trail, following a very recently laid track of a snowshoer. Made it over to near Rt. 104, and to near the dead end of Bayview, then basically came back the same route. Nice and sunny when I ventured out; slightly earlier and I would have been in a heavy (but short) snowfall.

Downhill skiing 1:15:00 [2]

Another gorgeous day skiing at Bristol. A bit nippy at first, but nothing unbearable. Very nice conditions everywhere we skied.

GPS said 24.2 miles and 20,300 vertical feet. I missed our first run, neglecting to start the GPS until we were back at the bottom ready to get on the lift for our second ride up.

Running (Pseudo running) 27:40 [3] 2.05 mi (13:31 / mi) +417ft 11:20 / mi
shoes: Screw shoes Asics Kahana 2 Mar

"Running" at Ellison Wetlands, with Anne. Anne stated that the trails there should be well packed down and runnable with screw shoes. Anne was not correct. The only thing packed down (and icy, but runnable with screw shoes) was the road back to the house. Once off of the road, the trails were either tracked, but not enough to be really packed down; or hardly tracked at all. The combination of slugging through snow, and the hills, and me being out of shape, resulted in a very pathetic number of miles and pace per mile. However, the effort was not insignificant.

Walking (Dog walk) 38:14 [1] 2.13 mi (17:58 / mi) +2ft 17:57 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

Mid-afternoon dog walk, around the "big block".

It was sunny and a relatively modest 23 degrees, but there were Laramie-strength winds blowing (gusts to 30 mph from the west, according to the National Weather Service), so the stretch where I was walking on the Rt 104 path from Maple to Bay, directly into the wind, was less than pleasant.
4 PM

Running (Treadmill) 40:00 [2] 4.03 mi (9:56 / mi) +92ft 9:43 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Treadmill at the Webster rec center. Started at a very leisurely 12 min/mile, then gradually sped up to 9:13/mile, before slowing down slightly over the last couple of minutes.

The place was nearly deserted as usual.

Running (Treadmill) 44:00 [2] 4.05 mi (10:52 / mi) +400ft 9:56 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Nimbus 11

Treadmill workout, at the fitness center in the Baytown plaza, as Anne's guest.

Did random hills, from 0% to 4.5%. Varied the speed as the incline changed, to try to keep the calories per hour approx equal.
12 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 58:52 [1] 2.88 mi (20:25 / mi) +13ft 20:20 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

With Homer, to Finn Park, around the field (surprisingly easy walking, due to some nice snowmobile tracks), then back to Maple, to the Rt 104 path for a very short distance, then a (very tough, due to fairly deep, heavy snow) bushwhack back to the end of Woodland and back home.

XC skiing 1:33:33 [3] 6.66 mi (14:03 / mi) +227ft 13:37 / mi

Mendon. Very nice day, sunny, low 20's. There was a bit of a breeze from the S or SW that was a little annoying in the open areas, otherwise, gorgeous day.

XC skiing 48:59 [2] 2.84 mi (17:15 / mi) +110ft 16:38 / mi

Webster Park, with Anne. A few times I felt like I was going at a reasonable clip and getting good glide. But we spent a fair amount of time on not-real-well-tracked trails, which kept the average pace to a pretty pathetic level. Was OK on hills as long as they weren't very steep and I didn't have to either turn or control my speed. That wasn't the case on the last hill; I tried snowplowing, to no avail, as usual, and then wiped out backwards, hitting my head on the (fortunately soft) snow. It was very close to the finish, so a fitting way to end the day ... Anne says I need new skis, bindings, and boots. She's probably right but I'm not sure I want to invest much money in a sport that just doesn't seem to agree with me.
