Basil Marella sprint. Bad, very bad. Especially one control, which took me nearly 9 friggin' minutes (should have taken around 2). I was in dead last place last time I checked.

I was certainly thrown off by not having trails on the map, which would appear to mean that I depend on trails way more than I should.

Straight-line distance was stated to be 2.24 km.

AP says the climb was 15 feet. It wasn't huge, but it HAD to be more than 15 feet.

Basil Marella Score-O ("pro Score-O", which is very clearly a misnomer for myself; "pro" meant no trails were shown on the map).

I got all of the controls but certainly not in a real efficient manner. Had to hunt pretty hard for a few of them.

feet got them all in 20 minutes less time than I did, and he's recuperating from a serious knee laceration, so that was rather humbling. Also, it looked like about 5-6 more mortal people got them all in a shorter time than I took. Still, this was much better than the Sprint.

PS: What's even more humbling is that feet did both the Sprint and the Score-O without having a compass -- and with no trails shown, and in most places, not much in the way of contours.

More LPGA walking. No GPS today, distance is an estimate. Time is also an estimate of the actual walking time.

About 30 minutes and maybe a mile of walking before I went on duty as a standard bearer, then about 5 miles and approx 2 hours of walking during the round itself.

I really lucked out, mine was the third from the last duo to tee off, which meant they were definitely competitive (competing for 2nd place, that is; there was no competition for first, as Tseng finished something like 19 under par). My two golfers were Christie Kerr who finished tied for 3rd with 8 under (thanks in large part to an eagle she got on hole 17), and Stacy Lewis, who was looking very good on the front 9, improving from 5 under at the start of the round to 8 under at the turn, but then she shot 2 over par on the back 9 to finish at 6 under, in a tie for 5th place.

This round was SO much more pleasant than the grueling pro-am round I had to work, which took 5.5 hours, and featured some really bad golf. This round, in contrast, was a speedy 4 hours in length, and had two quite excellent golfers. Much easier to watch.

Another day at the LPGA, as standard bearer. This was way more enjoyable and less tedious than the pro-am, although by its nature, golf isn't very fast-moving, so there was inevitably lots of standing around still. The time is a very rough estimate of the amount of time actually moving. The total time was a little over 5 hours, including time spent walking to and from my car.

Lots of time spent in the sun, with some walking in between time spent standing. Actual time was 5:47, but I tried to estimate the time spent actually walking (even though the standing around part was pretty tiring by itself).

Volunteering at the LPGA as a standard bearer (carrying around a sign giving the golfers' names and their current score vs par). Normally I like this task; this is my 4th or 5th year of doing it. But today was the pro-am, which meant one pro with four amateurs (in the case of the group I was with today, VERY amateur). This meant the play was quite slow, with the round taking about 5.5 hours (in actual competition, it's more like 4.5 hours).

The volunteer who I was paired with turned out to be a runner (the topic came up immediately upon us meeting each other, when he saw the Forerunner on my wrist), who did his first marathon 10 years ago when he was 50, and at this point has done 40 marathons. His goal is to do a marathon in all 50 states; he says he has 16 left. So at least we had some interesting conversation.

It was really a brutally tough day, even though only 5 miles was covered. I remarked to him at the end that this seemed as hard as any marathon or marathon training. Probably due to a combination of a lot of standing around, and the lack of being able to really exert yourself, but yet getting totally drained for no real training benefit.

I'm on duty Thursday (first day of competition) and Sunday (final day), both of which I'm sure will be far more enjoyable than today (well, barring getting caught in a thunderstorm or anything like that, which is definitely a possibility). On Sunday, my tee time is around 1:30 pm which should put me with a very competitive pair of golfers.

New shoes, very different than anything I've worn before. Very little motion control and not much cushioning, but lots of traction. Ankle high. Trailsnail found that Sierra had these for around $40 so I decided to give them a try. They didn't seem to cause any issues in this initial short run. They would certainly be far less likely to be pulled off the feet in deep mud like normal cut shoes would be.

Mendon Sprint. I did OK, not great. Took the much longer but easier and much less climb trail route to #1. No issues with 2, 3, and 4. Slightly overshot #5 to the left, but ran into the linear rock feature and figured out where I was. Somehow got way off line to the north coming out of 11, and went past the N end of the marsh rather than the passage point marked on the map. But that might not have been too bad, because I could have wound up having trouble finding the passage point.

Finished 8th out of 22, losing to a couple of people I normally beat, but beating a few people who really should beat me.

Straight line distance was 2.1 km, and clue sheet said 105 m of climb (AP analysis of GPS track said 77 feet).

Mendon Score-O.

I had no real strategy, considering the unusual nature of the event, with a number of "stealth" controls not shown on the map, but revealed by map segments at other controls. I had no real idea of how they were going to be revealed until I got to the first control that revealed them. There were small map segments showing some of the stealth controls, with a pen at the control to mark them down on your own map. I immediately found two problems, one being that it seemed to take me forever to look at the small map segment and figure out where on the big map it fell, and the other being that there was one pen at the control, but many people waiting to write down the stealth controls. Peter Dady brought his own pen, a very wise move. He finished 2nd, quite a bit better than he normally would, beating some very good people in the process. I'm suspecting that wasn't a coincidence, that his wise decision to bring his own pen really paid off.

At the second or third control where stealth controls were revealed, I encountered a third problem, which was that I was sweating so much that my attempts to mark on the map resulted in the map getting soaked with sweat, and I realized if I had persevered, the map would dissolve eventually and that would not be good at all.

So what I tried to do, after writing down only two of the stealth controls, was to focus only on stealth controls that had high point values, and attempt to remember their locations. And then make an effort to hit as many high-point value controls that were on the original map as possible. That actually worked moderately well.

I wound up with 471 points, 140 of which were from four stealth controls, only one of which I had written on my map. A big blunder was that the only other control I wrote on my map, before giving up because of sweat, was 188, worth 41 points. I could have gotten it, I was close to it when I went for 185, but I just didn't see the scribbles on my map, and really just wasn't thinking.

On the plus side, three of the stealth controls I got were fairly close to the finish, 186, 178, and 184, two of which I stored in my memory, one of which was written down. I got those all within the last 8 or so minutes while I was heading back to the finish area. So that gave my point total a decent boost, which it very sorely needed at that point.

I wound up finishing 7th out of 38. If I had remembered to get 188, that would have raised my point total to 512, and my place to 2nd, but I'm guessing almost everyone, in an event like this, can say after the fact "if I had only done this". Well, that is, everyone except for the Schirminater, who got all of the controls. (Speaking of whom, I encountered him twice during the Score-O, and I was blown away by how fast that guy runs!)

Weight is lower than it's been in a while, but probably not real valid to pay much attention to it, given that I just finished two orienteering courses and didn't have dinner. But I'll record it anyway ...

We had a couple of small trees cut down, and asked to have the wood chips piled at the end of our driveway, to put down on the trail we have winding through our woods in the back yard. Actually, to clarify, and not to point fingers, but I wasn't the family member who asked for the wood chips.

The pile was much larger than I had imagined, and is very much in the way of where we normally keep our boat (barely out of the way of the three cars that reside in our driveway, under normal conditions), so there is some urgency around getting the wood chip pile gone. So I worked pretty hard for what seemed like a long time, and made it through only approximately a third of the pile before I pretty much ran out of gas (and my back was starting to complain).

More wood chip workouts tomorrow, I'm sure.

Two main outdoor activities needed to get done today -- mow the lawn, and finish checking out control locations. Since by mid day, the lawn mowing would have been primarily in the sun, while the control checking out would be primarily in the shade regardless of when I went, I decided to get the lawn mowing out of the way before the sun got too high.

AP calculated my climb as "1 foot" which seems reasonable given that our lawn is pretty flat. Garmin Training Center, on the other hand (which gets elevation straight from the GPS signal, which is notoriously noisy for elevation), said my climb was 734 feet! (But in defense of the GPS elevation, it is at its worst when there is little or not elevation change, when one is probably not real concerned about elevation anyway. When the elevation is truly changing, like when climbing Mt. Marcy or Pike's Peak, the amount of noise is pretty insignificant compared to the real elevation change, so it's quite useful then.)
