Pickleball 1:30:00 [2]

Indoors at WRC. Way fewer people than yesterday, way more enjoyable ... although we could have used a few more (we had 7 -- Jayne, Terry, Scott, Paul, Cheryl, trailsnail, and me).

Pickleball 20:00 [1]

Very brief pickleball session, indoors at WRC. Probably at least partly due to the rain, we had a bumper crop of players today. Six courts going which meant 24 people playing but possibly another 24 sitting out waiting to go in. It was decided to rotate 4 people in at a time which meant just one game once a person gets on the court, and then it was also decided to play to 9 rather than 11 and first person to 9 wins, rather than the usual having to win by 2.

My knee was feeling a bit off kilter, so I decided after 2 fairly short games that between my knee complaining, and having to wait quite a while to play one game to 9 points and then sit out for quite a while longer, it just wasn't worth sticking around. Figured they needed fewer people today anyway, not more!

Lawn mowing 25:00 [3]

The back yard was way overdue for a mowing, and based on the forecast for the upcoming week, it looked like there may not be any totally dry days for a while. So when the sun came out and got the lawn into a semi dry state, I figured I should mow even though it wasn't ideal. I set the cut height higher than normal due to the grass being quite long, and of course, a little wet. Went OK.

Walking (Dog walk) 44:41 [1] 2.44 mi (18:20 / mi) +14ft 18:14 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

Goal was to walk the 8K TC course I've roughed out at GVP, partly to just check things out in general (make sure all control points seemed OK, see where it is most important to update the map, etc.), and partly to get a real, boots-on-the-ground assessment of the distance of what I considered to be the best routes from point to point.

Unfortunately, I got rained out about halfway through. I was prepared, both clothes-wise and mentally, to encounter some rain, but I guess I was only prepared for either a light steady rain, or short periods of moderate rain. After an acceptable level of rain for the first 10 or so controls (and in some cases, no rain at all), a persistent, moderate-level of rain started falling. I happened to be close to my car, so I decided to bail out at that point.

Course distance so far, start to #12, was 2.44 miles.

Walking (Dog walk) 6:24 [1] 0.34 mi (19:02 / mi)
shoes: Hiking boots

Short walk from where I left the course, back to the car.

Pickleball 45:00 [2]

At Webster Park. We had Jayne, Paul, Debbie S., Debbie H., Scott, Mae, and me. I played 2 games, sat out one, then played a 3rd game, and decided that was sufficient. Good news was there was no wind; not so good was that it was quite muggy.
10 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 54:09 [1] 2.98 mi (18:11 / mi) +16ft 18:06 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Late-morning walk with Homer, again to Finn Park, with a dip in the creek to cool off (for him, not me), and then he got hosed down, which he seemed to really enjoy, once we got home.

Biking 51:40 [4] 13.62 mi (3:48 / mi) +76ft 3:46 / mi
shoes: Dave Scott Ironman Centurian (

Early afternoon bike ride. Tried to push the pace a bit more than I did in my previous rides. Next time, I'm telling myself, I need to back off on the pace and try to get more time/distance in.
9 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 30:04 [0] 1.4 mi (21:30 / mi) +8ft 21:23 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Very nice evening, so I decided to take Homer for a slightly longer evening walk than usual, and thus brought my GPS with me.

Walked over to the next street, which is a much newer area and thus much less wooded than our street, partly to see what astronomical objects I might see that I don't see from our street. Saw one very bright object in the W-NW, around 15 degrees or so above the horizon. First I thought it was a plane, but it seemed pretty stationary. Kept watching it as I was walking, and it seemed to pretty much stay put. Also saw Saturn (magnitude 0.47, thus pretty easy to spot if you know where it is), nearby Spica (mag. 0.98), and Arcturus pretty much directly overhead (very bright, magnitude -0.05). But the object I saw in the W-NW seemed brighter than both.

I checked the star chart on my computer when I got back, and sadly there didn't seem to be anything in that portion of the sky anywhere near bright enough to explain what I saw. So unfortunately, I have to conclude it was a mere airplane, in spite of its apparent lack of movement.

Walking (Dog walk) 48:00 [1] 2.37 mi (20:15 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Mid-afternoon dog walk, partly to get Homer out of the house as Cheryl had someone over. Walked to Finn Park, through the field, to the creek, which Homer laid down in for about 3 minutes to cool off, then back home.

No GPS carried; gmap route:

Orienteering 1:08:30 [3] *** 3.25 mi (21:05 / mi) +130ft 20:19 / mi
spiked:11/12c shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Brown course at Webster.

Problems with #4 (a pit in an area of light green, some of which was medium green (who mapped this anyway?), totally flat terrain; had to re-attack it from a totally different direction and then found it -- apparently others had more trouble than I did). Other than that, no major problems, but almost for sure a couple of non-optimal route choices, and other time wasters.

More later. Time is an estimate; I didn't get my split printout for some reason, and I didn't stop my GPS until at least several minutes after I finished.

AP split analysis said I lost 3:50 on #4 (no real surprise there -- many people did it in less time but others took way longer than I did). Only other lost time was on the "run in" from #12 to the finish, again no surprise because I walked rather than ran.

If I could get RG to work on this computer I'll put my route up. Or I can send my GPS track to my low-powered and very low-priced laptop (which DOES connect to RG) and put the route on from there.
3 PM

Note

My son Greg and his son Fred (4 years old) did Yellow. I'm sure that Fred doesn't really "get" orienteering yet, but he sure likes maps and he's also very connected to how many controls a course has. I'm pretty sure he thinks there is a direct correlation between how many controls and how difficult a course is ...

Anyway, when I finished, I asked him what course he did -- he said Yellow, with 10 controls. He asked me what course I did, and I said Brown, and he immediately asked how many controls I had, and then he asked to see my map.

I'm glad that Brown has 12 controls rather than less than 10, otherwise, I'm sure he would have concluded that my course must have been easier than his.

Pickleball 1:00:00 [2]

Indoors at WRC. First pickleball in a few weeks, letting my knee recover from whatever the issue was a few weeks ago. It had been feeling OK, in fact no issues at all on the trip to Ohiopyle, so I decided to try an hour of pickleball to see if the knee would tolerate that or not. I'm happy that it seemed fine. But I'm also glad I stuck to my plan to only play an hour, to ease back into this activity.

Note

For anyone interested in pictures of kayakers (including my daughter!) going over a waterfall (Ohiopyle Falls, in Ohiopyle, PA), here are some:

Walking (Dog walk) 1:04:59 [1] 3.79 mi (17:07 / mi) +14ft 17:04 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Early morning walk with Homer. His first significant walk in a while since he was staying with the "sitter" in rural Canandaigua, who doesn't do any dog walking. He held up OK though.
10 AM

Biking 25:50 [2] 6.63 mi (3:54 / mi) +17ft 3:53 / mi
shoes: Dave Scott Ironman Centurian (

Road biking. Went out to Webster Park to catch some pickleball action; there was a foursome playing (which included trailsnail), but unfortunately I only saw about 5 points before they packed it in for the day.
11 AM

Biking 28:50 [3] 7.2 mi (4:00 / mi) +139ft 3:56 / mi
shoes: Dave Scott Ironman Centurian (

Biking back from Webster Park. Picked up the intensity a bit, somewhat necessitated by the uphill on Holt Road.

Biking (Off road) 17:00 [1] 3.04 mi (5:36 / mi) +76ft 5:28 / mi

In Ohiopyle PA. Along the rail-trail, pulling a small trailer for 4 year old Fred in it. Biked down to where we could do a short hike to one of the rapids, to meet up with Greg and Andrea (who were on a shredder) and Brian (in a kayak).

Walking 20:00 [3]

Lots of walking around by the river, waiting for the 3 river people to get there, upstream then downstream then back upstream then back downstream. Wouldn't normally log something like this which didn't involve much in the way of distance, but the walking was not trivial as it was totally rocky (rocks from maybe 6 inches in diameter to ones 4-10 feet across). So the walking did involve some physical and mental alertness. The good news is that my knee didn't bother me at all.
2 PM

Biking (Off road) 12:00 [1] 1.8 mi (6:40 / mi) +47ft 6:30 / mi

Biking back to Ohiopyle. GPS wasn't in any hurry to pick up satellites, so a bit was missed at the beginning of the ride back.

Biking (Off road) 30:00 [2] 3.88 mi (7:44 / mi) +170ft 7:25 / mi

More biking, still pulling trailer with Freddie in it. He finally fell asleep in the trailer so Cheryl and I decided to go on a bit longer of a ride than we would have otherwise. I pushed the pace a bit more to feel like I was getting at least a bit of a workout.

Rafting 4:00:00 [1]

Middle Yough in Ohiopyle. With whole family (Greg, Freddie, Andrea, Cheryl). Water level lower than when we did this 2 years ago, which meant more getting stuck on rocks. All in all, a pretty lame stretch of the river; some occasional Class I and even a Class II here or there, but mostly flat. This was done mainly for 4 year old Freddie since he can't go on the lower (for another 8 years or so!). He paid us back by sleeping around 2.5 hours of the trip ...

Biking 1:00:33 [2] 14.17 mi (4:16 / mi) +188ft 4:13 / mi
shoes: Dave Scott Ironman Centurian (

Morning bike ride. Pretty much ideal conditions -- not that windy, nice temperature (mid 60's -- very slightly cool at times but generally just about right). I tried doing more time and distance than last time out.

I swung by the Webster Park courts to see if I could observe any pickleball action, but apparently all of the Webster players were indoors at the Rec Center. No pickleball or tennis going on.

Walking (Dog walk) 43:00 [1] 2.29 mi (18:47 / mi) +8ft 18:43 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Hurricane 11

Mid-day walk with Homer and Hershey, over to Finn Park, but not around the field because that was quite wet .... Hershey really really enjoys going on walks, and it's unfortunate that her owner never takes her on any.

Thursday Jun 13, 2013 #

2 PM

Biking (stationary) 20:00 [1]

At the Rec Center. Not a great selection of stationary bikes there ...
4 PM

Note

I'm a little disappointed that trailsnail neglected to point out my incorrect use of the word "stationery" when I actually meant "stationary" in my bike workout today ....

(I've now corrected it.)

Biking 21:35 [1] 4.74 mi (4:33 / mi) +29ft 4:32 / mi
shoes: Dave Scott Ironman Centurian (

First attempt of the season to ride the bike. Very short ride, mainly a shake-down to see if the bike was OK (it seemed to be fine) and if my knee was OK with biking (a couple of small twinges but nothing worse than walking, definitely not as bad as pickleball). I'll have to see how it is later today and tomorrow to conclude whether biking is OK or not OK though.
12 PM

Lawn mowing 25:00 [1]

Front yard only. A bit concerned about some yellowish/brownish patches, in spite of (or maybe because of?) all the rain we've had recently.
3 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 43:36 [1] 2.35 mi (18:35 / mi) +8ft 18:31 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Late afternoon walk with Homer and Hershey, over to Finn Park and back.

12 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 1:35:00 [1] 4.0 mi (23:45 / mi) +39ft 23:32 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

Walk at Gen. Valley Park with the two dogs, Homer and Hershey. I'm course setter for the July 11 trail challenge, so my goal for today was to start getting some ideas for the courses, as well as observe places where the map needs more work (a number were observed, unfortunately ...). According to the weather map, the rain had passed, but actually it hadn't. It drizzled pretty steadily the whole time out.

My GPS somehow stopped for a while, so I added in a very rough estimate of the distance and time that might have been missed.
3 PM

Note

Knee report (for my own record of progress or lack thereof, mainly) -- it felt reasonably OK but not perfect on the walk. Going downhill was again more of an issue. Fortunately there are very few up or down hills at GVP.

After sitting for a bit when I got home, though, my left knee bothered me a moderate amount for the first few steps after getting up. More so than prior to my walk today. So this may be telling me that I really shouldn't be doing long-ish walks for a while, which is a bit discouraging because in my time off from pickleball, my plan was to do more walking (including some significant time mapping, mainly at Powder Mills) than I normally do. Guess I will now try biking to see how my knee fairs with that, if the rain ever stops.

Walking (LPGA) 4:50:00 [1] 5.0 mi (58:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Last day of the LPGA. Didn't carry a GPS today, but the time and distance are quite predictable ... :) My tee time was a way too early 6:50 am, meaning I had to be on the road from home by 6 am. Very cool for the first few holes, esp. since I decided to go with shorts and a short sleeve shirt, having faith in the weather forecast, that said it would fairy quickly become warm and sunny, and sure enough, it did.

I was impressed at the schedule that the golfers had today -- 36 holes total. The trio that I was with teed off, like I said, at 6:50, and finished their round at about 11:40. Their afternoon tee time was 12:20 -- 40 minutes to firm up the scores in the scorer's tent, grab a quick bite to eat, hit the bathroom, walk from the last green back to the first tee, and maybe relax for about 2 minutes, then get ready to go out for another nearly 5 hours. I concluded that golf is actually more of an athletic undertaking than I had given it credit for. Not to mention the high level of skill and focus needed to be competitive at this level.

Orienteering (LPGA) 5:28:10 [1] 5.52 mi (59:26 / mi) +339ft 56:11 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

More LPGA duty. Knee still a bit problematic.

I find it interesting, and also a bit discouraging, that AP examines my GPS track (with its very slow overall pace, consisting of periods of relatively fast walking interspersed with very long periods standing still), and concludes that I was probably "orienteering".

Walking (LPGA) 5:19:12 [1] 5.24 mi (1:00:55 / mi) +322ft 57:34 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

Second day of my LPGA duty. First day of actual tournament play. Better weather than yesterday, when the golf was canceled on account of the heavy, all-day rain, but still not the greatest weather. Misty rain the whole time, and at times the mist was substantial enough that the golfers and many spectators were using umbrellas. Needless to say, I was quite wet at the end.

My left knee was certainly feeling the effects of the minimal pickleball play yesterday; it was generally bothering me at least somewhat the entire time, the only exception, oddly, was when we were going up hills. Similarly, it hardly bothers me at all going up steps, whereas walking on flat ground definitely causes it to complain. I think my lesson, unfortunately, is that I need to take an extended hiatus from pickleball, like a month or so. And maybe another visit to an ortho doctor, as this problem seems quite different and distinctly more severe than the other problems I've experienced over the past couple of years.

Pickleball 1:00:00 [2]

At WRC, indoors. Played for an hour, felt my knee complaining during the last 30 minutes of it, so decided I'd better not overdo it today. Can't really afford to have major problems with it when I have 3 more days of walking the LPGA course (was scheduled for today also, but the golf was rained out, obviously ...).

Walking (LPGA) 5:22:10 [1] 5.75 mi (56:02 / mi) +287ft 53:31 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

First day of 5, volunteering for the LPGA as a standard bearer. Pro-Am today. Pro was Hee Young Park, who was very pleasant. In fact, everyone was quite pleasant -- probably a result of them (a) doing very well (12 under for the round), and (b) them all being beer salespeople (they all worked for Wright beverage distribution company or whatever it's called).

Walking (Dog walk) 51:12 [1] 2.73 mi (18:46 / mi) +11ft 18:42 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Hurricane 11

Dog walk, with Homer and with Hershey, who lives outside of Canandaigua. Hershey is up for a visit for a few days, mainly to give her some exercise which she doesn't get at home as her owner, who is a bit up in years, doesn't take her for walks. She has a fenced-in back yard with a doggie door so her dogs can go in and out as they wish. Hershey (black lab mix) is a great dog and not all that old, but she's put on a lot of weight over the past year (almost certainly correlated with her total lack of exercise). So her owner joked that Hershey's visit to us was going to a weight-loss camp ... Not sure how much we can accomplish in a few days though!
