Pickleball 45:00 [4]

Played a few very tough games with combinations of Mike S., Joe R., Doug, and Kevin. Didn't win at all, but had some enjoyable points and games.

Then played some much lower level pickleball, as Cheryl and I were trying to teach the game to her sister and brother-in-law. Made some good progress, but it was so non-strenuous that it's not worthy of being logged, even as intensity=0.

Strength 25:00 [3]

Slightly abbreviated fitness room workout, squeezed in before I had to leave for another activity.

Walking (Dog walk) 56:01 [1] 3.46 mi (16:10 / mi) +96ft 15:45 / mi

Walk with Homer on the Hojack trail. Trying to tire him out so he'll be well behaved when our out of town company arrives mid-afternoon or so ...

Walk/run (Dog walk) 22:33 [2] 2.15 mi (10:29 / mi) +13ft 10:26 / mi
shoes: Brooks Ghost 5

Went for a short walk/run with Homer before heading to pickleball. Once again, Homer was really dogging it for the last 10 minutes or so, in spite of it being only 50 degrees out. Guess I'll have to try him again on Hojack to see if that venue gives him more energy.
10 AM

Pickleball 2:15:00 [3]

Indoors at the Rec Center. Good group, including Angel and Kelly, probably the best male and female players there today, and many other good players.
2 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 52:16 [1] 2.77 mi (18:53 / mi) +50ft 18:34 / mi

Mid afternoon walk with Homer, upon Cheryl's request ... Almost-new route for us, over to DeWitt Rd and then into the town well fields off of DeWitt.
I used to run quite a bit on those trails, but some are now overgrown, and most are semi-unfamiliar because it has been a while.

Main aggravation was having to wait for traffic for a while to cross Bay Rd, both directions.

Powder Mills, again. Mostly in the seldom-used (and some of it not even mapped) NW section. Unfortunately, not a whole lot of great O terrain in that section. But might be worth including on the map and using from time to time, just for some variety.

Pickleball 30:00 [3]

After the fitness room workout, I got drawn into playing some pickleball. We had 5 -- Ken, Mike S., me, and Doug and Kevin, the recently-converted racketball players who are quite excellent despite being relatively new to the game.

They stayed together as a team, and each combination of the other three of us tried our hand against them, with no success.

Ken and I lost something like 11-5, and then Mike and I also lost 11-5. And I can't say that either Mike or I was playing unusually bad. Those two are just good.

Pickleball 1:55:00 [2]

Indoors at the Rec Center. I think we had around 16-18 people for 3 courts, so some sitting out but not so much to be annoying. Lots of nice games.

Orienteering (Sprint) 20:46 [3] 1.56 mi (13:19 / mi) +186ft 11:58 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

No major problems although a few times where I slowed down or stopped to read the map carefully because I know that the trails in the Washington Grove area can be pretty confusing, so I didn't want to lose contact. Didn't go very fast going either up or down steep hills. Other than that I did a fair amount of running.

Originally came up as a DNF when I downloaded, with #2 missing. I realized what had happened, in fact I kind of figured it out while I was on the course. The box at #2 hadn't been woken up yet, and I've never been in a situation before where I'm the one who wakes controls. I put the e-punch in the box for about a second which is usually longer than I need, pulled it out, and thought, "Hmmm I don't think I heard a beep ... let's try that again." So I repeated the above, still wasn't sure if I heard a beep, but figured, well I know I punched so I'll just continue on. After I was well away from that control it occurred to me that maybe the control hadn't been awakened yet. In fact I encountered a couple of other controls where I had to leave the e-punch in for 2+ seconds before it beeped. So sure enough, that's what happened on #2. Stina was very kind and gave me credit for the control anyway.

Finished 3rd, which I was pleasantly surprised at. Split analysis by AP was kind of interesting -- most splits I was somewhere between 4th and 7th place, 3rd on one or two, and 2nd on one of them (how, I can't imagine). So surprising that I came in 3rd when most of my splits were in the 4th-6th place range.

Pickleball 1:15:00 [2]

At Cobb's Hill, it was starting to rain more persistently; trailsnail and discussed whether to do the score-O, or go join the pickleball play in progress in a nice dry gym. The dry gym won out ...

Pickleball 45:00 [2]

Still at Webster Park. Still Cheryl, me, Mike and Debbie S. Warmed up for maybe 15 minutes to transition from tennis mode to pickleball mode, then played 2 games. Cheryl and I won the first one fairly easily, which is rather surprising, then they beat us in the 2nd game.

Walk/run (Dog walk) 20:01 [1] 1.84 mi (10:53 / mi) +35ft 10:41 / mi
shoes: Brooks Ghost 5

A walk/run mid morning before I had to get ready to head out somewhere for the afternoon. Increased the amount of time I ran and decreased the walking time, to 1:15 run / 0:45 walk, while reducing the speed of the "run" portion a bit from the last couple of outings.

Homer apparently didn't like this increase in running time, as he was really dogging it on the way back, so much so that I curtailed the run/walk a little bit sooner than I had wanted to, and reverted to a strictly "walk" mode (time and distance not recorded).

Walk/run on the Hojack Trail, with Homer. He stopped for a swim in the creek at about the turnaround point.

The hourly forecast said no rain until 1 pm but I really didn't believe it, based on the appearance of the sky and the radar. But still I was hoping we'd beat the rain. No way, however ... it was raining steadily but light to medium for about the last 10 minutes, resulting in a somewhat wet car (not from Homer as he has his blanket, but from me).

Pickleball 1:05:00 [2]

Walk/run 21:01 [3] 1.94 mi (10:51 / mi) +8ft 10:49 / mi

I've been encouraged enough from my few running outings that I decided to buy some new shoes. First running shoes of any kind I've bought in more than a year, and first road shoes I've bought in something like 2 years. So I took a trip down to DSW, tried on a few shoes of brands I've worn before, but nothing felt quite right. So I tried some more expensive shoes of a brand I haven't had in many years, and they felt quite good, so I splurged for them.

Of course, I just had to try them out right away. Did 1 min walk / 1 min run. Shoes did feel OK although that's not much of a test.

Mid to upper 80's, very humid -- so fine!!!!

6 PM

Walking 30:00 [1] 1.76 mi (17:03 / mi) +1ft 17:03 / mi

Cheryl had a haircut appt at the place on Park Ave near Berkeley that she goes to, and she asked if I could come along with her, and go out to eat at a restaurant on Park Ave. So I went out for a walk while her hair was being cut.

Lotsa people on Park Ave. tonight; running, walking, eating at the outdoor tables, etc.
9 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 31:00 [1] 1.72 mi (18:00 / mi)

Late-evening dog walk. Still a bit warm, but a nice breeze so it felt reasonably pleasant. Took a longer than normal walk (for the last walk of the day). Out to Maple, then north on Maple for about 5 minutes, then headed back. Maple was unusually peaceful -- the whole walk north on Maple, no cars passed me in either direction, nor could even be seen in the distance. And only 2 cars encountered on the way back.

Strength 35:00 [3]

Fitness room workout at the Rec Center. As usual, my main focus was on legs, but I did the two upper body exercises (lateral pulldowns and shoulder presses) that I occasionally, but not regularly, do.

My upper body is disgustingly weak ... and not really improving (although it probably doesn't help that I often find an excuse to not do those exercises).

The weights I can do on the leg workout machines, by contrast, are all steadily improving. My be just wishful thinking, but I do think the workouts are helping my knee issues.

Walking the last half mile home after the run/walk, as Homer seemed to have lost interest in the running portion, plus I didn't want to push things with my knees on pavement.

Orienteering race 1:04:17 [3] *** 3.77 mi (17:03 / mi) +76ft 16:44 / mi

Green course at Gen. Country Village nature center. Great terrain, great map. Sadly, not a great performance on my part, in particular on #10, where I made a 10+ minute error by running well off of the map and taking a while to realize it.

It took me a while to get into the scale of the map. I recalled that it wasn't 1:10000 but carelessly forgot to know ahead of time exactly what it was. So things were coming up a lot sooner than I expected for a while.

No issues with 1 or 2. For #3, I planned on heading in the general correct direction but aiming off to the right to the E-W stone wall, then follow that to the N-S stone wall, the junction of the walls, and the control. I aimed off a little too much which wouldn't have been a real problem, but then I spotted a control and of course, just HAD to check it even though it was pretty clearly not at a wall junction. So I lost a minute or so by doing that.

No real problems going to #4; took a slightly rough bearing and then used the shape of the hill before #4 to adjust to where I needed to be, and came out right on it. Also no problems with #5. Again, used the hill before #5 to adjust my route.

#6 and #7, similarly not difficulty. Followed the long spur down to #6, then a compass bearing, and using the side of the hill that #7 was on to adjust the route slightly.

I got off on #8 for some reason -- came out on the trail north of where the spur was. Just careless compass work I suspect. Might have lost a minute.

No problem with #9.

#10, major problem. For some reason, I decided to not take a direct route (which had no opportunities for trail running/walking), but instead head more south and pick up the trail that runs along the S boundary of the park. I apparently crossed that trail w/o realizing it -- not sure how that could have happened, obviously carelessness. So I wound up off of the map, roughly (I think) in the vicinity of the word "ditch" in the legend. I spotted in the distance a plowed field and thought that was the edge of the nature center land, but in fact I was well onto private property at that point. I was puzzled because there were some features I encountered that seemed like they SHOULD be mapped (like a decent sized clearing, and two tree stands). FINALLY it occurred to me that I might be off of the map ... I headed north, finally saw boundary signs, and when I crossed the boundary, things started making a bit of sense. I was finally on that trail (along the S boundary of the nature center), but I didn't know where along the trail I was. So I ran W under I hit an intersecting trail, then knew where I was, and from there navigated to the control with no trouble.

AP split analysis says I lost around 7-8 minutes, but it had to be more than that. I took 17 minutes on the control, while Ravi took 6 minutes, and for most other controls, he and I were pretty comparable -- sometimes I was a bit faster, sometimes he was.

No additional disasters. Had some brief confusion in the area around #12 (control code 185) in the area in the SE portion of the map that had a lot of rough open and green mapped, but didn't lose significant time.

All in all, a great course on a great map in a very interesting new venue. Thanks to everyone (mappers and course setters) who made this meet possible.

Hojack Trail walk/run. Went SE from Klem this time, to Holt Rd and back. Side trip down a mowed 10 meter or so wide patch that went along a very small stream, for Homer to have a few drinks from.
10 AM

Strength 18:00 [3]

Fitness Room workout at the Rec center. Made it short because I had Homer in the car, having gone straight there from the Hojack Trail. Not really concerned about his well-being, as it was no more than around 55 out and I had each window rolled down about 4 inches, plus I found a tiny bit of shade to park in. More concerned that other people would see him in the car and then THEY would get concerned, call in the police, etc etc.

Did slightly higher weights on most of the apparatuses (apparati??) than I've done in the past, so it was a moderately intense workout even though short.
5 PM

Pickleball 45:00 [2]

Pickleball, and a pickleball picnic, organized by trailsnail (thanks!). Had lots of people -- maybe 25 at the maximum?? I probably only played 3 games but it was still great getting together with the whole group.

Homer got to go for a swim in a nice deep section of a creek at the midway mark.

At Genesee Valley Park, with Cheryl and Homer.

Two days ago we attended a wedding celebration at the Roundhouse at the park, and I found out that Cheryl had hardly ever been there (and didn't realize that the canal intersected with the river in that park). She liked the little bit that we saw on Saturday, so we went back for a somewhat longer walk today.

Homer got to go swimming twice in the Genesee River.

Multiple stops for various reasons; estimated time spent stopped subtracted from total.
