Paddle tennis 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Tried paddle tennis for the first time, with a lady I've known for decades who's really into just about every racket sport (tennis, squash, ping pong, and now paddle tennis). She gave me a pretty good lesson on some of the basics, at Midtown. It is a pretty tough game, I have to say. I can't say I got a real good workout, but I'm sure I used muscles that I don't normally use, and I expect to be sore tomorrow.

Running 46:42 [2] 5.12 mi (9:07 / mi)
shoes: Nike Pegasus Tr Dec 08

Tried out new running shoes (Nike Pegasus Trail); seemed to work OK. VERY windy day. Ran on the Genesee River Trail from Charlotte to Lake Ave and back. Actually fairly well sheltered from the wind on most of the route, with the notable exception of the boardwalk across the wide waters near Turning Point Park, where we were battling gale-force winds both coming and going.

Running 49:40 [2] 5.41 mi (9:11 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Kahana 2 Aug 2008

Road run, in Penfield. Started at the park on 5 ML Road between Plank and Atlantic. Down 5ML to Penfield village, east to Baird, north to Whalen, west on Whalen to 5 ML, and back to the car. Warm (around 40), and the rain that was forecast to be present all day hasn't shown up yet. Kind of sloppy footing when we were forced to run on sidewalks, but when there was a runnable road shoulder, which was most of the time, the footing was very good.

Snowshoeing 49:00 [2] 2.62 mi (18:42 / mi)

At Whiting Rd trail system. Once around the outside loop. Mid teens, very windy, but most of the loop was reasonably well sheltered from the wind (with a few very open sections).

Running 52:00 [3] 4.1 mi (12:41 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Kahana - screw shoes

Ellison Wetlands run, with the dogs. As before, this run felt much harder than the very unimpressive minutes/mile pace would indicate.

Running warm up/down 12:18 [1] 0.67 mi (18:22 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Kahana - screw shoes

Warm up for race.

Running race 28:47 [5] 2.78 mi (10:21 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Kahana - screw shoes

Snow Cheap trail series. Good turnout, something like 130 people I think they said. Wearing screw shoes was very helpful. Anne brought hers but decided not to wear them, and she said she wished she had worn them. Course started at the lodge near Lake Riley. First part was mostly open fields, then it was trails nearly the entire rest of the way, much of it single track where it was tough to do any passing. I don't know if it was because it was dark out or because the entire course was snow-covered, but it seemed a heck of a lot longer than the 2.78 miles that my GPS said.

I finished 33rd overall out of 124 finishers, which was better, percentile wise, than I normally finish in races like this. Not sure what to attribute that to, but I definitely can't complain about that kind of finish. It sure isn't because I've been doing a lot of training lately though ...

I was 4th out of 12 in my age group. If the race had been 6 weeks from now when I'll be in a different age group, I would have been 1st out of 4 ... but I'm not looking forward to the new age group for a couple of reasons, one of which is that I'll be in the same group as Tom Lamme, and when he runs, I'll have no shot at first (he'll probably be between 1.5 and 2 minutes per mile faster). In my current age group, I was only a little more than a minute out of first place (or 20-25 seconds/mile), which at least seems within reach.

Running 48:23 [1] 5.3 mi (9:08 / mi)
weight:175lbs shoes: Asics Gel Kahana 2 Aug 2008

Genesee River trail, from Charlotte to Lake Ave and back. Very windy day; this trail provided some decent shelter from the wind, most of the way anyway.

My weight is creeping up which is not good ...

Running 51:00 [3] 5.28 mi (9:40 / mi)
weight:174.5lbs shoes: Asics Gel Kahana 10-07 - screw

Afternoon run, from home, to Finn Park, through the park to Gravel, N on Gravel, cut over to 5 ML, to Klem, Gravel, Finn Park, and back.

Running hills 49:00 [3] 3.75 mi (13:04 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Kahana - screw shoes

Ellison Wetlands. Pace sounds very slow, and it was, but effort was much higher than pace would indicate. Trails were fairly slick, with an inch or so of fresh snow, often on top of leaves. Very cautious (and slow) going downhill. Because of traction difficulties, uphills were more work than normal.

Screw shoes helped a lot; certainly wouldn't have done this run w/o them. But they can only do so much to help traction when the issue is fresh snow and wet leaves, as opposed to hard-packed snow or ice.

Running 38:12 [2] 3.8 mi (10:03 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Kahana - screw shoes

Brrr.

Anne and I had planned on a run this afternoon, and although neither of us was excited about going out in the cold, very windy conditions, we decided not to wimp out. However, we wanted someplace as sheltered from the wind as possible.

We parked on Whiting Rd in the parking lot for the nature trail system, and headed into Webster Park on the new trail that connects the park to Whiting Rd. Headed south for a loop around the new Midnight Trail, then a loop back to the trail back to Whiting Road. Ran 2.22 miles in Webster Park.

Then we did a loop around the Whiting Rd system, but not the longest loop possible. We avoided the Orange trail that goes to the southern part of the system, because that has several very exposed stretches. I think it was mainly the Red trail that we did, which wound up being a 1.58 mile loop.

All in all, it was in fact pretty sheltered for such a windy day, and quite tolerable.

Orienteering 42:00 [1] 2.0 mi (21:00 / mi)

Scrooge-O, with Cheryl. Distance is a total guess, didn't wear the Forerunner.

Walking 52:00 [1] 2.6 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Kahana May 08

Walk with our two dogs, the neighbor's dog, and Cheryl, in Webster Park, checking out some new trails. Started at Whiting Rd and took the new trail that connects Webster Park with Whiting Rd (and to the Whiting Rd trail system). Headed down to the new "Midnight Trail" that extends beyond the previous southern edge of the park.

Running 54:18 [3] 5.65 mi (9:37 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Kahana 10-07 - screw

Whiting Rd nature trails. Two laps around, plus a short out and back on a grass trail that comes out at Whiting Rd, a bit north of the parking lot. With Anne.

Running 56:00 [3] 6.7 mi (8:21 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Kahana May 08

Started on Hojack Trail, at Klem; ran SE towards N. Ponds Park. Ran on this bird sanctuary trail that starts on the N side of Orchard, a little past the Orchard St parking lot for N. Ponds Park. The trail came out on Rt. 250; then I headed S to the village, took Ridge to Holt to the Rt 104 path, to Hard Rd, to Hojack, and back to the car. Almost beat the rain (but the rain that came was pretty light, and bearable).

This was my longest run in quite a while, which is kind of pathetic that it only takes a 6.7 mile run to be my longest.
