Pickleball 45:00 [1]

Pickleball at Webster Park. For the first 15 minutes it was just Jayne and me, and Jayne didn't seem real eager to play if there was no one else, so we more or less chatted (basically learning her views on various things, and a little about her daughter who visited this past weekend). Then Donna showed up and we played cutthroat for a while until Debbie showed up, at which time we played a game of doubles. At the end of the game, it was 9:30 and I had to leave to drive Cheryl to work by 10:00, as we're down to one car today. So not a real great morning on the pickleball courts. Would have been much better, of course, if trailsnail had been there, if she hadn't come up with this excuse of a broken clavicle to get out of playing pickleball. :)

Pickleball 1:15:00 [1]

Outdoor pickleball, on a rather confusing morning. First we were going to play at Webster Park, but since it rained, the courts were wet. Then our ringleader got information that said that the indoor courts at the rec center were available essentially all day, so we decided to play indoors. Then we found out that, oops, the indoor courts weren't available until at least 10:00 and possibly not even then, so we decided on the outdoor courts at the rec center. We played for around 15 minutes when we got kicked off by a group of lady tennis players who had the courts reserved at 9:00. So, back to the original plan of Webster Park. Some puddles needed to be removed, and it was way windier than I like, but we had some good games. 7 people in all.

Note

2 hours of painting. Finished painting the house siding, which meant I was able to remove the extension ladder from the garage, which I suspect the tenants will definitely appreciate.

Mapping 37:07 [1] 1.64 mi (22:38 / mi) +196ft 20:20 / mi

I had a very small amount of time, and I needed to go over to Irondequoit anyway, so I did a map walk with my current draft of the map to just make mental notes of where the map was OK (many places) and where it needed more attention (a number of other places).

Pickleball 1:30:00 [1]

Outdoor pickleball at Webster Park, with Jayne, Liz, and trailsnail.

Way windier than I like.
10 AM

Note

1.5 hours of house painting at the rental house on Marion Street. Working on the garage trim. Garage looks way better than before I did today's painting, I have to say. It will definitely need a second coat. Plus, all I did was the trim that's the most visible (the trim facing the road). Still, it's nice to see how the trim, in a contrasting color to the siding, makes things look so much better.

Walk/run 47:15 [3] 3.16 mi (14:58 / mi) +255ft 13:54 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Pre-"running" the 5K Trail Challenge course designed by Tyler. "Running" is a bit of a misnomer, as I didn't run whenever I was moving uphill, when the trail was technical, when the trail was going steeply downhill, or when I was tired and didn't have the energy. Plus, I was streamering most of the control points I got to, so there was some time spent just standing and streamering. Still, for my current level of fitness, it was a good workout.

Mapping 11:25 [1] 0.45 mi (25:23 / mi) +5ft 25:07 / mi

8 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 35:14 [1] 1.98 mi (17:50 / mi) +67ft 17:17 / mi

Late-evening dog walk. Temperature was around 84 at our house, but it was very windy (gusts up to 33 mph according the the airport weather report) so that made it tolerable. Actually less comfortable back in our non-air-conditioned house than out on the walk.

Lawn mowing 25:00 [1]

Actually, not really lawn mowing since there is no longer anything that resembles a lawn in our back yard. I'd call it "yard mowing". Basically trimming down the weeds and some weed trees (some of which were almost a foot tall) so that yard (not lawn) looks a bit less scraggly.

Pickleball (Left handed) 1:20:00 [3]

Indoor pickleball at the Rec Center. 10 people in attendance. To support my observations about people in general seeming to play worse outdoors, I felt like the people I observed today, as well as myself, were playing a lot better indoors. Still not totally sure why that is.

The bad news is that the fairly small amount of right-handed pickleball playing yesterday, even though I almost totally avoided hitting any backhands, did aggravate my elbow, evidence that I am nowhere near ready to return to even limited right handed playing. Kind of discouraging. But very slightly offsetting that discouragement is that I do think I'm gradually getting a bit better playing left handed. So maybe any pickleball future I have is as a lefty, if I'm unable to get past the tennis elbow problem with my right arm.

Pickleball 1:20:00 [3]

3-person pickleball -- Cheryl, trailsnail, and I. Some reasonably worthwhile play, though.

I tried some right-handed playing (maybe about half the time, I was playing right handed), for the first time in a long time. I used my light-weight paddle with the larger-diameter grip, and attempted to hit any shot on the left side with a left-handed forehand rather than a right-handed backhand. No pain or even discomfort while playing, but the key will be how it feels later today and tomorrow.

Walking (Dog walk) 21:31 [0] 0.99 mi (21:39 / mi) +21ft 21:13 / mi

Aborted dog walk attempt with Hugo. I decided that maybe he would consider it positive to go on a long walk with me, with no Homer along. My intent was to take him to Bay Rd, then the 104 path to Maple, then into Finn Park, and back home. He certainly was not on board with that plan. It was a chore to get him to walk even a half mile away from home; sniffing like mad, looking a bit scared to go any further in scary unfamiliar territory, etc. So finally I gave up and turned around to head home at the 0.5 mile walk.

I know that his owner has walked him over to Finn Park and back, but via the more direct route, so maybe that's where I should have taken him.
3 PM

Walk/run 22:11 [3] 1.92 mi (11:33 / mi) +33ft 11:22 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Walk/run to test out a couple of injuries from the last O meet. I hurt my ribs in a fall while running on a trail, when I tripped over a root that had to be all of about half an inch high, stumbled for a few steps, realized I was going down, and tried a tuck and roll. I rolled onto my left arm which was propelled into the side of my chest. I was a bit shaken up but not in any great pain, so I continued on. Later that day, it didn't feel bad, but the next day, it was more uncomfortable. No real pain 95% of the time, only when I move in certain ways. It bothered me a little while running today but not that much.

A more worrisome issue was that my right knee was bothering me most of the O courses, and later that day when I moved in a certain way. Today, it was only very slightly noticeable while running. So I'll cross my fingers that I didn't do any major damage to it (or even minor damage) by doing the O courses.

Temperature was only 94 at our house (I heard it is 97 downtown), with a fairly modest dew point of 66 so not real high humidity, and a very brisk wind, making it actually very tolerable. I'm guessing it would have been less so if I was running steadily rather than mixing walking with running.

My initial target was my usual 30 seconds running, 90 seconds walking, but I felt more energetic than my previous outings, so the runs were more like 40-45 seconds, with the walks being correspondingly shorter.

Walking (Dog walk) 43:55 [1] 2.51 mi (17:30 / mi) +114ft 16:47 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Hurricane 11

Walk with Homer to Finn Park and back. He and I needed a walk, and he and I also needed a break from Hugo, the 4-month old Wheaten Terrier whose owner (who lives across the street from us) is spending a week in Cape Cod.

After the first few hours with Hugo (which was by mid Saturday morning), we have very definitely eliminated Wheaten Terriers from any consideration we may have given as far as a future dog acquisition. He is very high maintenance, much more work than Hershey and Joey (combined) were when we were sitting for them.

Orienteering (Sprint) 17:55 [4] 1.42 mi (12:37 / mi) +78ft 12:00 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

At Mendon, starting near the NW corner of the beach parking lot.

Not much in the way of navigational challenges or substantial route choice dilemmas, so it was mainly a question of running speed and endurance (which I have neither of these days), and the ability to keep up as fast of a pace as possible on the long slog on the barely-existent "trail" between 6 and 7.

On the latter (speed on the non-existent trail through tall grass, some marshy ground, and fallen trees), I didn't do very well at all. Dave Levine and I compared splits, He beat me by 1:24 overall, and by 1:36 on that leg alone, so w/o that leg, I wind up beating him by a bit. But hats off to him for beating me soundly on that leg. Plus, as I pointed out to him, by dawdling on that leg, I was more rested for the rest of the course, which I beat him on. So if I had been able to push harder through the cruddy "trail", I would have been slower from that point on, and he still most likely would have beaten me.

Orienteering (Score-O) 1:03:49 [4] 4.31 mi (14:48 / mi) +363ft 13:43 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

The time limit was 75 minutes, but I was aiming to be done in 60 minutes, as my long-time friend and previous tennis partner (back when we were in our 20's!) was playing a tournament match in the 60+ division at 2:00 in the Picklefest at Ontario Beach Park. I know and have played with his partner as well, so I wanted to cheer them on, take some video, and check out some of the other action. Plus, the same long-time friend's wife was playing in the women's 60+ division, so I was hoping to see her play (which I did).

I wound up being 3 minutes "overtime" vs my goal of 60 minutes.

Probably an OK strategy for my limited running speed and endurance, although not perfect. I headed for 171 first, but it wasn't all that close to the start, was kind of out of the way for the rest of my strategy, and was only worth 10 points. Better would have been to go to 192 (closer to the start, not quite as much out of the way, and 20 points).

After that I did: 163, 175, 174, 186, 194, 185, 184, 183, 161, 193, 155, 156, 162.

I'm not sure if I could have done much better given my limited running endurance. I had originally hoped to get 166 and maybe 173, and I'm pretty sure I could have if I had used 75 minutes, but I could tell when I got to around 185 that there was no way I was going to get those.

Navigation was reasonably clean but not perfect.

I attacked 175 from the trail bend just to the east of it, and I came out maybe 30 meters south of the flag. Either the flag was located a bit north of the circle, or the map isn't quite right, because I came upon the (or at least "a") ruined stone fence, and just beyond that there was some fairly open woods. I thought I needed to go further south, based on those observations and what the map was telling me, but I saw another person to the north of me, and I looked in his direction and saw, a fair distance off, the flag. So not a lot of lost time, maybe a minute at most.

I also didn't hit 174 real cleanly, probably because there was no real good attack point from the bottom of the hill. I came to the white wood area towards the SW tip of it, and the flag was at the NE tip. No major lost, maybe 30 seconds or so. Then there was a nice, totally unmapped, trail leading from the open woods down the hill to the east, towards 186, so that was a pleasant surprise. (But not totally unexpected, as I recalled from Medved races that there were a couple of small but well established trails that were on that hillside.)

All in all, a very interesting and challenging course.

Walk/run (With dog) 49:33 [2] 4.0 mi (12:23 / mi) +311ft 11:32 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Walk/run, with Homer, on the Hojack Trail.

We had two encounters with unleashed dogs, neither of them pleasant, one of them particularly non-pleasant. I usually think the best of dog owners, and when I see an owner with an unleashed dog, my first assumption (which is actually almost always correct) is that this is a very well behaved, mellow dog that can be trusted off the leash.

The first dog was a golden retriever, a breed which I think highly of. It was well ahead of its owner, a lady who was on a bike, and barked fairly aggressively at Homer, but didn't make any move towards us. I held Homer back a ways until the owner got there, and she assured me that he was a very nice dog, so I cautiously approached him with Homer in tow, telling Homer that this was a nice dog ... Homer seemed receptive to a civil meeting with the dog, but the dog started showing its teeth and still looking menacing. The lady apologized and said the dog was normally very friendly, and she was surprised at his behavior. I kept Homer away from him, the other dog didn't attack, and they went on their way and we on ours.

The other one was much worse. A lady was walking with a black, somewhat heavy-set dog, off the leash. The dog instantly starting running from a good 50 feet away at Homer, growling, and attacked Homer. Homer, of course, retaliated, briefly anyway, I pulled Homer back, the "fight" lasted maybe 1-2 seconds, so no damage done, but pretty scary, since Homer isn't one to back down from an aggressive dog, so it could have gotten into a major dog fight. The lady semi apologized, but she didn't seem nearly as contrite as she should have. I yelled at her "You need to have your dog on a leash!" and she just replied "Sorry about that." But showed no sign of putting it on a leash.

Pickleball 30:00 [1]

Outdoor pickleball at the Webster Rec center. I was playing pretty badly, but it seemed like everyone was a little off. I observed to trailsnail that it seems like most of the group there today was playing distinctly worse than they all played indoors, and the reason isn't all that obvious, at least today. There was a light breeze but nothing significant. The sun was low enough that it was hardly ever in your eyes, and the court wasn't so bad that we got many if any bad bounces. I speculate that it's something almost psychological about being in the wide open outdoors rather than a more confined space indoors, which might make it harder to have a perspective on the flight of the ball, where the lines are, etc. Who knows.

Lawn mowing 25:00 [1]

Front yard only. Parts of it kind of needed it, other parts, it was tough to tell where I had mowed and where I hadn't. But it does look a little less scraggly after the mowing (but also a little more brown in spots).
11 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 48:13 [1] 2.84 mi (16:59 / mi) +78ft 16:33 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Hurricane 11

With Homer and Hershey. Over to Finn Park, with a stop at the creek, then continuing around the field, and back home. Lasts day with Hershey and Joey, unfortunately for them, as they both really like walks, and their owner isn't into giving them walks. And now she's recovering from surgery so she'll be even less inclined to do so.

I didn't turn on my GPS in advance, so it didn't acquire satellites until a number of minutes into the walk. Non-recorded distance was estimated.

Walk/run (With dog) 30:45 [2] 2.38 mi (12:56 / mi) +67ft 12:36 / mi

Second attempt at doing some running. Again, approx 30 seconds running / 90 seconds walking, repeated many times. My knees felt very slightly creaky but nothing bad by any means. Homer was starting to drag a little during the last few running "intervals", but he kept up, with a little encouragement.

Walking 1:00:00 [1] 2.78 mi (21:35 / mi)

Corn Hill festival; walking to and from car (parked only about a half mile away, for free, on the street near Washington Square Park), plus some very slow walking at the festival. Total time was around 3 hours but so much of that was standing (or sitting) that I thought putting down 1 hour made more sense.

No tracks from this walk even though I had my GPS, for some reason. I reset the GPS after Corn Hill and before Cobb's Hill mapping, but I didn't think that meant the GPS was supposed to delete the tracks. It did keep the distance and time records at least. Also, if I was only going to have tracks for one of my outings, having them whilte mapping is certainly far more important than having tracks for meandering around Corn Hill.

Pickleball (Left handed) 1:45:00 [1]

Indoor pickleball at the Webster Rec center. Good group, 14 at one point, including trailsnail, Cheryl, and Paul. I played strictly left handed. My backhand is getting a little better, as is my play at the kitchen line, but I totally blew way too many very easy forehands. Still, I was playing well enough for it to be enjoyable. Still looking forward to eventually playing right handed again, of course.
9 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 25:30 [3] 1.0 mi (25:30 / mi)

Late-evening walk with the dogs and Cheryl. We decided to push Joey a bit and bring him on the 1-mile walk we did, over to the next neighborhood and around their block. To our surprise, he did pretty well; he wasn't so slow that he held up the other two dogs significantly. Maybe all of the walks we're taking him on, even though pretty short, are getting him in somewhat better shape. Of course, it also helped that it was a cool evening, around 70 F.

Mapping 1:07:00 [1]

First field work for updating the Cobb's Hill map.

I forgot to bring along my GPS, a pretty important thing to have had along given my main goal was to verify and update where needed the complicated trail network in the Washington Grove area. Still a reasonably productive outing.

The current versions of the Cobb's Hill map are quite confusing -- there's a version dated 2009 which shows all of the Washington Grove area as white woods, which is most definitely not the case. But the trails seemed to be mapped pretty well. Then there is a version dated 2004 which shows a fair amount of green in the Washington Grove area (I didn't verify it was correct and current, but it has to be way more accurate than showing it all as white woods), but the trails seem to be mapped somewhat more crudely than the 2009 version. In addition, the 2004 version uses the "fallen tree" symbol a lot, which I don't remember being on the map, and is definitely not on the 2009 version of the map. So a lot of information from previous maps, but not consistent, and not a case of the most recent map being more accurate than the older version, at least not in all cases.
11 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 23:00 [1]

Dog walk with the two fast dogs (Homer and Hershey), through the woods trail at the end of our street, over to the next neighborhood, around the block, then back through the woods trail again.

Another trip to Cobbs Hill, this time with my GPS, with my goal to walk the trails, not paying any attention to updating the map at this point (but observing places where the map needs updating).

Second lap was in the car, as a check as to how well the GPS tracks register with reality.

Walking (Dog walk) 23:09 [0] 0.87 mi (26:42 / mi) +56ft 25:10 / mi

Cheryl took Homer and Hershey, the two speedier dogs, to Ellison Wetlands for a walk (at least I assume that's where they were headed).

To appease Joey (the more slug-like dog), I took him for a long walk ("long" relative to his standards).

I'm actually wondering if this is the longest walk he's ever been on. He was discovered abandoned at the Canandaigua YMCA by his present owner, very heavy and not in good health at all. So I'm surmising that his previous owner wasn't into taking him for walks.

His (and Hershey's) present owner, while a very nice person who absolutely loves her dogs, just isn't into taking the dogs on walks. They have a moderately large fenced yard on the outskirts of Canandaigua, and the dogs have a door where they can go in and out as they please.

So I think it's reasonable to surmise that Joey's 0.87 mile walk I just took him on is the longest he's been on in his whole life.

Pickleball (Left handed) 1:05:41 [1] 1.42 mi (46:07 / mi)

Pickleball at the new courts at the lake with trailsnail, Paul, and Cheryl. I played totally left handed. Very badly the first game, then I switched to a heavier paddle which I know from past experience I play better with, and my game improved somewhat, to the point that it was enjoyable rather than total frustration.
2 PM

Walk/run 22:01 [2] 1.75 mi (12:35 / mi) +58ft 12:12 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

My knee has been feeling reasonably OK, even when doing a 15-mile walk, so I decided to try to ease back into running, intending to abort any attempt at running at the first sign of pain.

Today was 30 sec running / 90 sec walking, repeated 11 times. Both knees felt fine, but the test will be if there are any issues later today or tomorrow.

88 degrees, sunny. So fine!!

Pickleball 15:00 [1]

Went up to Lake Ontario Beach park with trailsnail for the dedication ceremony for the 6 very nice pickleball courts that were recently completed. We played one game while there. Lots of pickleball players, probably 60-80 in attendance. Nice (and fairly brief) speeches by Maggie Brooks and Joe Robach.
6 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 17:00 [0] 0.5 mi (33:59 / mi)

Walk with Joey, the slow-moving of the three dogs currently in residence at our house. I figured the two speedier dogs would enjoy their walk much better if we weren't encumbered by Joey's slow pace.

Longer and much faster walk with Homer and Hershey.

Note

2 hours of painting. South side of the house is very nearly finished (about 15 minutes of painting left, but I couldn't do that today because in order to paint that spot I have to put my ladder on an area I painted today). North side has maybe 1.5 hours left. Then the garage will need to be tackled. Progress is being made at least.

First time on the bike in a while. A very short ride, to see if biking adversely impacted my elbow woes. Way too soon to say for sure, but I did feel some tightness in my right elbow towards the end of the ride which was totally absent from my left elbow, so there may be some negative impact. Hope not.
