Pickleball 2:00:00 [2]

Webster Rec Center. 12 people total, lots of good games and some good non-game drills.
2 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 45:51 [1] 2.35 mi (19:29 / mi) +3ft 19:27 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

Mid afternoon walk with Homer, over to Finn Park, but didn't go past the parking lot because the trail looked like it had had zero traffic (foot, ski, snowshoe, snowmobile traffic -- nothing), and I didn't feel like slogging through, and breaking trail in, about a foot of fairly heavy snow. Then we went around the big block, to Bay Rd, and back home.

Again used my new Garmin Forerunner 10. I found another aggravation with it.

When you first turn it on, it doesn't automatically look for satellites. Presumably to conserve battery power. When you push the button that says you want to run, it then starts looking for satellites; then you push the run button again, once satellites are acquired, to actually start the clock. This seems slightly irritating but not terrible.

So today, around 10 minutes before I was ready to head out, I turned on the watch, pressed the run button, put it on our porch, and it started acquiring satellites, things seemed OK.

Then, 10 minutes later when I was finally ready to start out, I picked up the watch, and it was back in the standby mode -- ie, not ready to run. No satellite acquisition. So I pressed run again, and it again started looking for satellites. WTF? I thought ... I had told it to do that 10 minutes ago.

All I can think of is that it has a "feature" where, once satellites are acquired, if you don't start running soon, like in a minute or 2 or 3, it decides you really didn't need/want satellite acquisition, and it turns off the mechanism to stay locked in with satellites. So you have to start all over again when actually ready to run (in my case, walk) -- trying to give the Garmin plenty of time ahead of when you're ready to go out to capture satellites does no good at all, apparently.

Pickleball 2:30:00 [2]

At the Rec Center. Some very nice games, others not the greatest, but all in all, a good time.

The highlight was the last game I played. Scott Lipitz, probably one of the best 4-5 players in Rochester (he's a young guy, maybe mid 30's) showed up towards the end, along with a young lady named Cheryl who was also quite good. Mike S. and I played against them, and did more respectably than I would have imagined, losing something like 11-7. It was quite educational playing against them, and actually a lot of fun too. Neither one was terribly overpowering, but they had a great touch game, pretty much never missed, and could put it away decisively when given the opportunity.

Pickleball 1:15:00 [2]

At the Rec Center. 6 people; trailsnail, Paul, Cheryl, Lin, Doug, and I.

The most intense workout was when Doug and I were sitting out of doubles action and we played a game of singles. Lots of fun, wouldn't mind playing more singles from time to time, but definitely a workout.
2 PM

Snowblowing 45:00 [1]

More cleaning up of the driveway and walk, and clearing out the neighbor's driveway where the plow had left a pile of snow.

Pickleball 1:30:00 [2]

Good group at the Rec center -- 17 people at the max, I believe we had, on 3 courts. My heel didn't bother me much but it was a little sore after 1.5 hours, so I decided to stop then rather than continue to the bitter end and risk setting back my recovery from whatever it is that ails my heel.

Overall, my touch game was working a bit better than it usually does, which was nice.

Walking (Dog walk) 13:10 [1] 0.67 mi (19:39 / mi) +2ft 19:36 / mi

This was mainly a trial of a new GPS I got for Christmas, a Garmin Forerunner 10. I wanted to make sure AP could read it OK, which it can.

I'm not overly impressed by the Forerunner 10, but I can't say I wasn't forewarned. It is a significantly dumbed-down version of other Garmin wrist GPS units. For example, it's possible to see your current pace, but there is no way to display your overall average pace, which I find more valuable, because the instantaneous pace can be all over the map just from momentary poor reception, inherent errors that kind of come out in the wash over time but can give highly variable current pace readings, etc. There's also no way to see altitude, as another example; GPS altitude isn't real accurate when it involves relatively small elevation changes, but I found it very helpful when climbing Mt. Marcy or Pike's Peak -- it was plenty accurate to get some sense of how many vertical feet I had climbed and how much climb was left.

Based on this one very limited trial, it also doesn't seem as accurate, when comparing the GPS track to where I know I walked, than the 205.

On the plus side, it's more compact than the 205-type GPS units, and has a nicer (more physically solid) interface with the computer.

Walking (Dog walk) 53:46 [1] 2.93 mi (18:23 / mi) +147ft 17:32 / mi

Another urban dog walk, again checking things out for the Rochester map adventure. Shorter than previous ones because my left heel is still ailing a bit. I'm hoping this relatively short walk didn't hinder its healing.

Pickleball 2:00:00 [2]

Again at the Rec Center. My play was, as usual, very spotty. And my heel, which I thought was quite a bit better than yesterday, definitely got worse during play. So I probably need to take a couple of days off ...

Saturday Dec 22, 2012 #

Pickleball 2:00:00 [2]

Webster Rec Center. Four courts, around 20 people total, lots of good games.

I seemed to have done something to my left heel, in about the 3rd game I played, like pulled something. Hopefully it is nothing serious.

Walking (Dog walk) 1:28:47 [1] 4.45 mi (19:58 / mi) +331ft 18:39 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

Yet another somewhat urban walk with Homer, less urban than the previous two because a lot of it was in Cobb's Hill. The weather was less pleasant that yesterday, which in turn was less pleasant the Wednesday, but really not all that bad -- light, wet snow was falling, temp was mid 30's, and there wasn't much wind.

Walking (Dog walk) 1:55:25 [1] 6.08 mi (19:00 / mi) +116ft 18:39 / mi

Another urban walk with Homer, again working on "course setting" for the Rochester Map Adventure. Colder than yesterday but tolerable.

Pickleball 2:00:00 [2]

At the Rec Center. Around 16 people, with 3 courts.

Walking (Dog walk) 1:40:25 [1] 5.27 mi (19:03 / mi) +91ft 18:45 / mi
shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Urban walk with Homer, checking out possible control points for the next Rochester Map Adventure. Homer hadn't done any significant city walks before today, so I was wondering how he'd react to it, although I wasn't terribly concerned. Sure enough, he was fine. At one point, there was an ambulance coming down East Ave past where we were walking, with its siren on very loud. He wasn't the least bit phased, in fact didn't even look up from whatever smell it was he was sniffing on the grass.

Finding control points isn't easy, I'm finding, especially if the objective is to make them at least a little bit interesting. Trivial and non-interesting questions, like "What color are the shutters at house #357", are easy to come by but I'd rather use those only if nothing else can be found. I did manage to find a few moderately OK ones, so the day was somewhat productive. If nothing else, it was a decent morning for a walk; sunny, mid to upper 30's, and not all that windy, at the time I was out.

Mapping 1:26:15 [1] 2.88 mi (29:58 / mi) +75ft 29:15 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Too warm of a day not to get some mapping done (around 50). So I pretty much finished the portion of Genesee Valley Park that is being mapped. Now I need to work on the U of R campus.

Pickleball 1:45:00 [2]

Huge group at the Rec Center, thanks to the fine efforts of trailsnail! We had four courts, and 25 people at the max, which meant 16 people playing and 9 sitting out. Fortunately the games go fairly quickly, usually, so people sitting out don't need to sit out for all that long. Overall, I played so-so, definitely losing more games than I won, but that was partly due to what opponents I wound up playing against (and what partner I had), and partly due to my lackluster skills today.
2 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 51:38 [1] 2.99 mi (17:17 / mi) +115ft 16:40 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Mid-afternoon walk with Homer, over to Finn Park, around the big field, and back.

Mapping 1:29:25 [1] 3.05 mi (29:21 / mi) +111ft 28:23 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

More Gen. Valley Park mapping. Making good progress on the central area (just south of the canal); pretty much done with that area.

Like yesterday, it was only marginally warm enough -- my hands got very cold for a while, when I was in the open areas. Once in the more wooded areas and out of the wind, it was no problem.

Mapping 1:07:44 [1] 2.17 mi (31:15 / mi) +46ft 30:38 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

Genesee Valley Park. Had only a short amount of time between when it got (marginally) warm enough for my fingers to write, and when I had planned on playing pickleball. Still, I got a fair amount done, spending most of the time in the area of the Genesee Rowing Club, where there is a building where none existed before, and a number of new gravelly roads.
4 PM

Pickleball 1:30:00 [2]

Th afternoon walk-on session. Around 14 people. Wide range of abilities. Some good games, some not so good ...

Wednesday Dec 12, 2012 #

Pickleball 1:20:00 [2]

At the Rec Center. Mike S., Debbie, Jayne, Kay, and me. We had some good games. Amazingly, I came out on the winning side three times when Mike was on the other side, which doesn't happen too often.

Walking (Dog walk) 1:15:44 [1] 3.92 mi (19:19 / mi) +115ft 18:48 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

Mid-day walk with Homer at Genesee Valley Park, doing a couple of mapping related activities (working on mapping the area under the 390 overpass, where there is a new building that didn't exist on any available aerial photos, plus some other new gravel roads and trails in that area), but mostly walking around with a map in my hand observing. The mapping didn't involve writing anything down (too cold for that), but instead, taking GPS coordinates of building boundaries, getting GPS tracks of trails, etc.
2 PM

Pickleball 1:05:00 [2]

At the Rec Center; just Cheryl and me, doing some practice drills. It is her birthday, she was off of work this afternoon, and that was her choice of what to do! It was partially motivated, I'm sure, from a pickleball instructional DVD that we got, along with some other pickleball supplies. We watched a little bit of it last night and she said it made her want to go out and work on some drills. Also, she got to utilize three of her (very non-exciting) birthday presents -- indoor court shoes, a pickleball shirt, and a pickleball duffel bag.

Sunday Dec 9, 2012 #

Pickleball 1:55:00 [2]

Webster Rec Center. Three courts, 12 people. I was in a lot of good, competitive teams, but sadly on the losing end of the majority ... The last 3 games were the same sides, Cheryl and I against Richard and Joyce. We miraculously won the first game in a squeaker, then lost the 2nd game again in a squeaker, and soundly lost the 3rd game, 11-5. Can't be too unhappy, because I would say they're basically the better team by a moderate amount, so to take one out of 3 from them, and have one of the losses be close, is about as good as we can hope for.

Walking (Dog walk) 49:46 [1] 2.85 mi (17:28 / mi) +134ft 16:43 / mi

Early afternoon walk with Homer over to Finn Park, around the big field, and back. No speed records this time.

Thursday Dec 6, 2012 #

Pickleball 1:30:00 [1]

At the Rec Center. Fun for a while, with only 3 people, Cheryl, Debbie, and me. We played the other 2 against me -- good workout, lots of fun. Then a 4th person came, a lady who is a pretty weak player (way below Cheryl and Debbie's level). The foursome play was a lot less enjoyable than the threesome had been.

Pickleball 1:20:00 [3]

Afternoon at the drop-in pickleball time at the Rec Center. Quite a difference in intensity from this morning! Had a number of very good games with various teammate and opponent combinations which included Mike S. Paul, Bert, Richard, and Joyce -- all very solid players. Then one final game against Bert and Joy (who has become a dependable and steady intermediate player after taking the game up kind of slowly at first), with my teammate someone whose name I can't remember but I've played with quite a few times previously. He's more erratic than any of the other players mentioned above, plus I wasn't playing that great, so we got beaten soundly by Bert and Joy.

Mapping 2:38:15 [1] 5.2 mi (30:26 / mi) +160ft 29:34 / mi
shoes: Hiking boots

Genesee Valley Park, mapping. Mostly on the west side of the river (in the ice rink / tennis court area), which isn't included on the current map.

Extremely unseasonably warm (upper 60's by the time I was done). Wish I had worn shorts. The downside from a weather standpoint is that it was very windy, which can make things awkward when using the usual two-Mylar-sheet approach which Karl taught me and which I nearly always use. The top sheet tends to blow around out of control when lifting it to write on the bottom sheet. But all in all -- an unusually good mapping day for early December.
1 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 26:42 [2] 1.85 mi (14:24 / mi) +5ft 14:22 / mi
shoes: Saucony Cohesion

A brisk walk with Homer, after getting back from mapping. I felt like I should get him out for a semi decent walk on such a nice day, but the weather was supposed to change for the worse, sometime in the afternoon. Soon after he and I set out for our walk, I saw some very threatening skies in the west, so I decided that I'd try to do the loop around the big block at as fast of a pace as possible. I warned him that he couldn't dawdle ... and to his credit, he didn't. I had to give him a gentle tug on the leash a few times to let him know he couldn't do his normal sniffing, but actually not too many times.

Walking (Dog walk) 46:06 [1] 2.56 mi (17:59 / mi) +16ft 17:53 / mi

Early afternoon walk with Homer to Finn Park and back, with a short stop for him to wade in the stream. Nice day for a walk -- upper 40's, very little wind.
