9 AM

Strength 25:00 [3]

Leg workout in the fitness room before pickleball.
10 AM

Pickleball 1:30:00 [2]

Indoors at the Rec Center. Lots of people and a fair number of quite good people, but for some reason I didn't find myself playing with many of them. Still, some good games, and some less exciting ones.
7 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 50:41 [1] 2.77 mi (18:19 / mi) +6ft 18:17 / mi

Evening walk with Homer, to Finn Park, to the field but not around it, then back to Maple, then Rt 104 path to Bay Rd and home.

9 AM

Walking (Dog walk) 55:16 [1] 2.76 mi (20:03 / mi) +119ft 19:16 / mi

Morning walk with Homer and with Hugo, the Wheaten Terrier from across the street who was our house guest last night and this morning.

Passed up the chance to play pickleball -- after 2 hours of generally pretty competitive play yesterday, plus doing some very unusual (for me) running yesterday at the Trail Challenge, I felt more inclined to do a long easy walk with the dogs than to venture out to the Webster Park courts. Cheryl did go, and called me soon after she arrived to whine that there were only 3 players there including her, and was I SURE that I didn't want to come play? I said, yes, I'm sure, and the dogs will appreciate a nice walk ...

2 PM

Pickleball 2:00:00 [3]

Indoors at the Rec Center. Some very good players present (like Joe and Mike Roth), and no one really weak, so we had some very good games. 14 people for most of the session.
6 PM

Orienteering race (Trail Challenge) 25:27 [5] ** 3.94 km (6:28 / km) +156ft 6:06 / km
spiked:10/10c shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Ellison Park 4K Trail Challenge. Finished 2nd to Tyler which I was surprised at. (Not surprised at losing to Tyler, but surprised that I didn't have other people in front of me.) Did a fair amount of running; it will be interesting to see how my knees feel tomorrow.

Stina's course was about as close to the target distance as possible. I didn't feel like I did any extra running, and I came in within 1% of 4K.

Only sub-optimum route choice was taking the trail that was mostly underwater (sometimes up to nearly a foot deep) between #3 and #4. There was an alternate trail on slightly higher ground that I could have taken, had I known about the extensive water hazards on the straighter/leveler trail that I chose.

After I finished, I offered to disqualify myself because the rules said "No swimming or wading", and I was most definitely wading (although nowhere near swimming). Stina assured me that wading through water that was present on a mapped trail was not grounds for disqualification, though.

Walking (Dog walk) 23:00 [1] 1.28 mi (17:58 / mi)

Walk with Homer over to the next neighborhood and around the block.

Walking (Dog walk) 1:12:21 [2] 2.67 mi (27:04 / mi) +254ft 24:50 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Ellison Wetlands, with Homer. I'm really out of shape. The hills that I used to find challenging when running, I'm finding every bit as challenging now when walking.
2 PM

Tennis 30:00 [2]

Tennis, with Cheryl, with brand new rackets that just arrived yesterday. We both agreed that we were playing better with the new rackets than with our 30+ year old ones. Forehand and net play were OK; backhand needs a lot of work.

9 AM

Strength 25:00 [3]

Rec Center fitness room. Entirely leg-related workout. For the first time, the weight I was able to do w/o knee discomfort dropped slightly from last time for leg extensions and leg curls. Hope that's not significant.

Pickleball 1:45:00 [3]

Indoors at the Rec Center. Fairly small group, but had a couple of real competitive games with Kelly, Kevin, Bill, and me.

Sunday Aug 25, 2013 #

2 PM

Pickleball 25:00 [2]

At the Rec Center, indoors. Played one real game, then did a drill with Mike S. which was playing singles on half the width of the court, to encourage coming to the net and therefore hitting touch shots. Good drill, although be probably scored 4 times as many points as I did.
3 PM

Biking 1:37:00 [3] 23.8 mi (4:05 / mi) +243ft 4:02 / mi
shoes: Dave Scott Ironman Centurian (

Brought my bike to pickleball; headed out going east to Slocum Rd, down to Rt 104, brief ride into the nearly abandoned plaza at Slocum and Rt 104, hoping to get some ice cream or a shake at the small ice cream stand in the center of the parking lot, only to find that it was out of business ... :( Then down to Ridge, into the village of Webster, down to State Rd, to Plank, to Hatch, and back home. Started out pretty slowly as I wanted to go longer than normal, but sped up a bit in the last 1/3 or so of the ride. Great weather for biking.

Pickleball 1:45:00 [3]

Indoors at the Rec Center. Quite a few good games.
6 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 46:48 [1] 2.5 mi (18:43 / mi) +15ft 18:37 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Walk with Homer to Finn Park and back, with a stop at the creek. Homer is quite unimpressed with the amount of water in the creek these days, and as a result has little interest in lingering there.

Forgot to start the GPS until about 0.3 miles into the walk -- added in the estimated missing distance.

Pickleball 1:19:17 [2] 1.1 mi (1:12:08 / mi) +1ft 1:12:04 / mi

Strength 31:00 [3]

Fitness room workout, mostly legs again.

10 AM

Pickleball 45:00 [3]

Webster Park. Couldn't get there until around 10 am, so only got in 3 games, but two of them were quite good. Not that I played well of course.
4 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 41:45 [1] 2.25 mi (18:35 / mi) +8ft 18:31 / mi

Late afternoon walk to Finn Park, with Homer and Hershey.
6 PM

Course setting 1:15:00 [1] 2.5 mi (30:00 / mi) +300ft 26:57 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Distance and time are rough guesses as I kept forgetting to re-start the GPS when I left the car.

Hanging out streamers for the TNT training tomorrow.

Sunday Aug 18, 2013 #

3 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 44:16 [1] 2.52 mi (17:34 / mi) +10ft 17:30 / mi
shoes: Asics Gel Venture 3

Late afternoon walk with Homer over to Finn Park.

When we got back, there were 3 dogs socializing in our yard -- Hugo, the Wheaton Terrier from across the street, and Joey and Hershey, two dogs belonging to a lady in rural Canandaigua who we trade dog-sitting duties with. Thankfully, Homer gets along just fine with Joey and Hershey, and tolerates Hugo (who just absolutely loves every person and dog but can be over-exuberant). So it was fun for everyone.

Strength 30:00 [3]

10 AM

Pickleball 1:45:00 [2]

Webster Rec Center. Had 12-13 people there. Wide range of levels. The first 3 games or so, I wound up in games that weren't all that evenly matched, they weren't all that much fun, and frankly I was playing pretty badly. I took a break, then got into some much more even games, had more fun, and played better generally, up until the last game when I teamed with Mike S., and both of us were way off, and lost the game 12-10 against a team that wasn't bad, but whom we should have beaten. All in all, though, not a bad morning.
2 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 1:00:48 [1] 2.24 mi (27:09 / mi) +197ft 25:03 / mi

With Cheryl and Homer. Walking around Ellison Park, mainly the golf course area, with current map in hand. Homer got to meet two friendly dogs, take a look at the dog park, and see a couple of horses up pretty close, plus go for a few swims in the creek.

Pickleball 1:15:00 [1] 1.26 mi (59:31 / mi) +1ft 59:28 / mi

Pickleball at Webster Park. Small group, only 6 -- Steve, Joy, Mike and Debbie S., Cheryl, me. Not a whole lot of exciting games. But maybe that was OK because I was playing pretty lousy. Most interesting game was when Mike S. recruited Sam Barnabas, who was there playing tennis with his (very excellent) sons, one other young man who won the Roch. District Tennis Tournament 10 years ago, and that young man's father. Sam was sitting out; Mike knew him and talked him into trying pickleball, with Mike and I playing with him. Talk about a natural. Not too surprising since Sam's a solid tennis player and also an excellent badminton player. Unfortunately, Same could only play for about 15 minutes with us before he was summoned back to the tennis court.

Again wore the GPS for the heck of it (and was pleased to see that I covered 1.26 miles), but I forgot to turn it on once when I was playing, and then also forgot to turn it off when I was sitting out, so it's not much of a record of time played.

Strength 35:00 [3]

The usual fitness room workout. The weights I'm lifting with leg exercises are steadily increasing, actually faster than I might have thought. The two arm exercises I do (lat pulldowns and shoulder press), on the other hand, are pretty stagnant. Guess I should be more encouraged about the leg progress since that's where my main issues are, than discouraged about the lack of upper body progress.

WRC Fitness room workout. Mainly legs as usual, but with two arm exercises thrown in (lat pulldowns and shoulder presses).

Walk/run (With Homer) 28:26 [2] 2.41 mi (11:48 / mi) +43ft 11:36 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Tried running for the first time in many months! I've been getting stronger in the legs, and more flexible, from the exercises I've been doing, and I haven't had any knee issues while playing pickleball in a while, so I decided to see how running went. Started out doing 30 sec of running interspersed with 90 seconds of walking, but that felt a little wimpy after a few reps, so I increased the running to between 45 or 60 seconds and the walking to 75 or 60 seconds respectively. Knee felt fine, but the real test is whether it bothers me tomorrow, and then whether I can do regular workouts (like every other day) like this and not have any knee problems re-appear.

First significant running that Homer has done in quite a while, and he seemed to hold up OK. A dip in the creek at the turnaround point helped a lot.

Pickleball 1:45:00 [3]

Outdoors at Webster Park. Had 9 players at the max. Joe Roth made a surprise appearance (I had thought he had gone out to Calif to backpack and then to see his granddaughter, but he's leaving this Wed.). All of my matches involved Joe on the other side of the net, so I had a reasonable workout. Players there were Joe, me, Cheryl, Mae, Tom, Ken, Dan, Andy, and apparently one person I'm not recalling.

Pickleball 2:00:00 [2]

Indoors at the Rec Center. Some competitive games, and some lopsided games. Competitive games generally involved some combination of Mike S., Mike R., Pam, Fran, Brian, Burt, and me.

Course setting 1:10:00 [2] 2.78 mi (25:11 / mi)

Picking up the remainder of the controls. Thanks to Ed, Mike, Brian, and Rafael, all of the controls in the Log Cabin Rd area got picked up after the meet last night. It would have been totally impractical to get the more distant controls, though; would have been some major night-O involved. So my plan was to head back this morning, pretty early, to get the remaining 13 controls. I woke up and the roads were wet and it was rainy lightly, and I was still pretty wiped out from yesterday, so I couldn't get motivated to head right out. Big mistake. By the time I got there, a little after 9:00, the rain had turned into a downpour. I set out anyway, got a loop of 4, then got a couple more that were fairly close to Zoo Road. Then the downpour intensified, and I spent some time sitting in my (very wet) car waiting for it to subside, which it finally did. Finally got the remaining ones.

GPS is being very balky, and won't download tracks. For a while it wouldn't even power up. My guess/hope is that it wasn't happy about being out in the downpour, and just needs to dry out a little. (Although I think they're supposed to be waterproof enough to withstand even a pretty hard rain.)

Durand O meet course setting.

As usual, took way longer than I had expected, for a reasonably compact area. As a result, I was kind of stressed the last hour, and made a couple of errors as a result, both of which fortunately I realized and was able to correct before anyone went out. Steve asked whether I had streamered everything, and I hadn't -- even though I know that it makes control placement a lot easier and error-free when everything is streamered. I did streamer many points, and in some cases I'm pretty sure I streamered a point and the streamer disappeared. So streamering isn't a sure-fire way to avoid errors and to make setting out controls easier, if they disappear.

It didn't help that I took a break around 4:15 to go to Bill Gray's for a milkshake -- they sell shakes for half price between 2:30 and 4:30. That was probably about a 20 minute side track. When I decided to take a milkshake break, of course, I thought I was in pretty good shape time wise. As is was, I got the last controls set out by around 5:50, and then the two misplaced controls (very close to each other fortunately) corrected by 6:00.

Pickleball 45:40 [3] 0.81 mi (56:22 / mi) +4ft 56:06 / mi

Pickleball at the Ellison Park courts. Only 5 there, but good competition, I would say I was the weakest of the players. Joe Roth, Mike Roth, Mike S., Glenn Pearce, and myself. Played three games, lost two, won one. Losing games were: Mike S. and me against Joe and Mike Roth; and Mike Roth and me against Mike S. and Glenn. Winning game was Joe and I against Mike R. and Glenn.

For the heck of it, wore my GPS, although I forgot to start it until around 5 minutes in.

Walking (Dog walk) 45:06 [1] 2.57 mi (17:33 / mi) +115ft 16:50 / mi
shoes: Saucony Progrid Hurricane 11

Walk with Homer to Finn Park and back. Stopped at the stream but for some reason he didn't seem real eager to go in. Stream was pretty low so maybe he figured it wasn't worth his while since he couldn't really swim. He was still happy to get hosed off once we got back home though.

Monday Aug 5, 2013 #

9 AM

Pickleball 1:30:00 [2]

Webster Park. Group included Joe Roth and his son Mike, both of whom I got to play a number of games with.
5 PM

Walking 41:00 [1] 2.16 mi (19:00 / mi) +200ft 17:28 / mi

Checking out a few more control sites at Durand. Didn't wear a GPS, mileage and climbs are estimates.
7 PM

Strength 25:00 [3]

Leg and other exercises at the Rec Center fitness room.
8 PM

Pickleball 30:00 [2]

At the Rec Center, after the fitness room workout.

Two games: Sue and I vs Paul and trailsnail, and Mike S. and I vs Doug and Pam in a very tough game; they made some errors near the end and we came back from an 8-6 deficit to win 11-8.
