Downhill skiing 1:09:09 [3] 12.32 mi (5:37 / mi) +8400ft 3:25 / mi

Skiing at Bristol! Got a later than optimum start, unfortunately. I had an 8 am appt to have my car inspected (inspection expires today). I brought my ski stuff along, hoping to be on the road from Monro Muffler by 8:20 or so. But I was told that the rear brake pads and assorted related items were shot and wouldn't pass inspection, and that putting in new brakes would be 1.5 hours. Not much choice but to wait. So I hit the slopes a bit after 11 am.

Absolutely positively gorgeous day! Upper 30's, sunny, snow everywhere. Unfortunately the skiing was quite tough. Everyone said that it was great earlier (freshly groomed overnight). When I got there, snow was somewhat pushed around in piles, and very heavy. Not terrible but a lot of work. Still I'm glad I went. Just wish I had gotten there at 9 am instead of 11 am.

Pickleball 20:00 [3]

Rec Center; this was the week between the previous ladder league and the next ladder league. So our side of the gym wasn't reserved which meant it was open gym. There were some basketball players who wanted to play, thus we could only have one court going. There were 8 people competing for that court, which meant playing half the time. I decided to bag it after one game, and let people who had driven a lot further than I did get more play in.

Walking (Dog walk) 40:16 [1] 2.03 mi (19:49 / mi) +2ft 19:48 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Around the big block, with Homer and Hanna. The Rt 104 path was totally untracked so we were breaking trail, making this walk a bit tougher than usual.

Walking (Dog walk) 37:09 [1] 2.07 mi (17:57 / mi) +5ft 17:55 / mi

Walk around the big block, with Hanna and Homer. Nippy day (20 deg), bit of an annoying wind from the west (18 mph).

GPS was FUBAR for the first 3 minutes or so of the walk, then it seemed OK.

Walking (Dog walk) 54:25 [1] 2.8 mi (19:26 / mi) +14ft 19:21 / mi
shoes: Montrail Mt Masochist Mar 2011

Mid-day walk with the dogs to Finn Park, around the field, and back. Only a few icy areas. Nice day, almost spring-like relative to recent weather -- 30 degrees, sunny, not too windy. I was even overdressed.

Pickleball 1:25:00 [5]

Pickleball at the Rec Center with the morning group, which consists of some very good players, esp. Doug, Kevin, Pam, Mike S., and Sean. All probably 4.0+ level players, some may be pushing 4.5. (5.0 is the highest the ranking scale goes)

I was definitely in the weaker half of the players there (besides those five mentioned above, there were me, Paul, and Mark Y., plus Jack for a little while).

Played harder and more competitively than I have in a long time. Very good workout. I thought I played decent, not great, not bad. I could use more outings with that level of competition.

Walking (Dog walk) 35:54 [1] 2.01 mi (17:52 / mi) +1ft 17:51 / mi

Walk with the dogs, around the big block. Pretty chilly (19 degrees) but not terribly windy so it was tolerable.

Walking (Dog walk) 34:19 [1] 1.72 mi (19:59 / mi) +5ft 19:56 / mi

Mid-morning moderate-length walk with Homer and Hanna.
1 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 18:30 [1] 1.03 mi (17:57 / mi) +7ft 17:51 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Another doggie walk. Shorter this time.

Hanna got to meet a dog on the street who is a bit of a bully to some of the other neighborhood dogs. Her name is Daisy, and she's not big, maybe 30 pounds; looks like she might have some boxer and/or pit bull in her. She gets along great with Homer because Homer will play rough with her which she likes. She's met a couple of dogs who we've dog-sat for, and had reacted very aggressively to them, so I was worried about how she'd do with Hanna, but the first meeting actually went well. Both dogs were wagging their tails high in the air and looking like they wanted to play. So hopefully they will be compatible.
2 PM

Pickleball 1:25:00 [3]

Open play at the Rec Center. Had a decent number of good games, including being in over my head on the first game, playing in a foursome with Sean, Pam, and Mike S.

Walking (Dog walk) 39:20 [1] 2.08 mi (18:55 / mi) +2ft 18:54 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Walk with Homer and Hanna around the big block.

Hanna has turned out to be somewhat high maintenance in terms of getting her to do her potty stuff. She tends to refuse to do anything on short walks, even on multiple short walks. Thus, long walks are usually needed. It's probably a ploy to get long walks. Whatever the motivation, it's clear that Homer as well as Hanna really do enjoy long walks.

Walking 39:21 [1] 2.34 mi (16:49 / mi) +3ft 16:48 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

A bit of course setting for Roch. Map Adventure.

Grossly inaccurate GPS trace for most of this walk. I don't think I've ever seen a trace this bad.

Pickleball 1:00:00 [2]

Rec Center open play.

Downhill skiing 1:00:00 [3] +14000ft

Ski morning at Bristol! Great weather (pretty windy but sunny and moderately warm) and great conditions. Skied on my Rossi Exp 88's.

Pickleball 50:00 [4]

Ladder league at the Rec Center. Three competitive games; I won two and lost one. I scored the most points in our foursome in the 3 games, which unfortunately means that I move back up to court 1 for next week and play the truly competent players. My experience with that last week is that I will wind up quite humbled.

Strength 1:15:00 [3]

Open play at the Rec Center. After two not-so-fun games, I wound up in a foursome with Pam for my last three games, and we had adequate-to-decent partners each time, so those games were very enjoyable. And since I was always on the other team from Pam, I got a good and challenging workout.

Course setting 45:00 [1] 1.0 mi (45:01 / mi)

Setting out controls in a very wet, snowy, and slushy Highland Park, for the training session at the CCE. With trailsnail.
12 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 41:45 [1] 2.16 mi (19:22 / mi) +2ft 19:21 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

A walk around the big block with Homer and Hanna.

Pickleball 20:00 [0]

Aborted attempt to play pickleball at the Rec Center. Due to a misunderstanding of the available gym time, we had only about 25 minutes between one group who had reserved the gym, and the next group. To make it worse, the two games we did have time for were decidedly not fun, which is what usually happens where there are 3 solid players and one extremely weak one ...
3 PM

Strength 15:00 [2]

Short fitness room workout after pickleball was curtailed.

Wednesday Mar 12, 2014 #

Pickleball 1:30:00 [3]

Webster Rec center, open gym. Eventually 8 people there total, although all of my games were with the same foursome -- trailsnail, Paul, and Debbie S. Lots of very competitive games (except when we did guys against girls :) ), had a good workout. Wound up playing two games with each of the three possible partner combinations.
3 PM

Walking (Dog walk) 21:49 [2] 1.13 mi (19:18 / mi) +5ft 19:13 / mi
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Homer and Hanna said "Blizzard schmizzard! We want to get out for our walk!" Went over to the adjacent street which is is much more open and therefore more windy and blizzard-y than our street. Also a short jaunt through the woods, on the trail that had some nice drifts in spots. So fine!!

Only encountered a single car in our journey! No real surprise there, though.

Walking (Dog walk) 1:32:13 [1] 4.33 mi (21:18 / mi)
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Urban walk with Homer (not Hanna), checking out possible control points for RMA.

Hanna seems to have an issue with her front left leg; she limps around the house sometimes, and it seems to be a bit worse after I've taken her for a reasonably long walk. On the walks themselves, she doesn't seem to limp much if at all, but that might be because she seems to really love walks. In any event, I decided it wouldn't make sense to take her on a 4+ mile walk.
8 PM

Pickleball 50:00 [5]

Ladder league, on court 1, with the best players -- Doug, Pam, Burt. It was clear that I didn't belong! I got 3 points the 1st game, then 4 points, then 4 points, by far the lowest point total of any of the foursome. Not only wasn't I ready skill-wise for this level, but I wasn't ready endurance-wise either. I'm just not used to playing at that level of intensity. We played a 4th game that didn't count, and Doug and I lost 11-0 -- quite humbling. Part of the problem is that I was running out of gas. We had time to play a 5th game but I had to beg off, I just didn't have it in me.

Walking (Dog walk) 47:14 [1] 2.46 mi (19:11 / mi) +7ft 19:08 / mi

Walk to Finn Park, with Homer and Hanna. Upper 20's but fairly brisk wind from the west which was noticeable on the way back.

Pickleball 1:20:00 [2]

Rec Center. Quite frustrating -- some of the best players in Rochester (along with a couple who are arguably among the best in the country) were here today, along with some very weak players including at least one person who had never played before. Since we've yet to establish a system that works as far as getting good players playing with other good players, and beginners or novices playing with each other, everyone was randomly mixed together resulting in lots of games that were not much fun for anyone involved. I think I played 6-7 games, of which two were competitive (four solid players) and a lot of fun. The others, not so much.

Walking (Dog walk) 45:25 [1] 2.31 mi (19:40 / mi) +8ft 19:36 / mi

With Homer and Hanna, over to Finn Park and back.

Fortunately, Hanna walks reasonably well on the leash, and for a dog that is about 30% overweight (weighs 90 pounds, supposedly (we'll find out for sure when she visits the vet this afternoon) and probably should be more like 70 pounds), she seems quite peppy. No problem at all keeping up with Homer's typical walk pace, at least.

Pickleball 55:00 [3]

Ladder league. I played unusually well (for me, that is), winning all 3 games (each with different partner combinations).

Walking (Dog walks) 1:10:00 [1] 3.5 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon hiking boots

Multiple dog walks, estimated time and distance. Acquired a new dog today from Lollypop, a 5-year old lab mix that we've named Hanna. Wanted to give her plenty of walks to hopefully avoid housebreaking incidents and to try to get started on a weight loss program for her (she's about 20 pounds overweight). Fortunately, she seems to love walks, at least as much as Homer does, and despite her weight, she's quite energetic (but not in an annoying way).

Seemed like a heat wave -- around 26 degrees when Homer and I set out for our walk. I tried to push the pace a bit faster than usual, although only dropped below 16 min/mile on one of the three miles.
