Running 30:00 [3]2.73 mi (10:59 / mi)
shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail
The weather was terrible for skiing -- cold, strong winds, snow in the air but not really accumulating anything significant on the ground. We decided to bag skiing for the day. I went for a run in downtown Breckenridge, along a bike path along the stream running through town. Not a pleasant day for running either. The footing was OK but not great. Was aiming for a 60 minute run but could only last 30 minutes due to the cold, windy weather. My hands were what just wouldn't stay warm. Plus, the altitude -- 9600 feet -- was a major factor, even though the run was pretty much flat.

Saturday Feb 16

Downhill skiing 2:30:00 [2]
Skiing at Breckenridge. Very nice day, sunny nearly the whole day, upper 20's. Fairly crowded, which wasn't unexpected for President's Day weekend. But we more or less figured out what lift to avoid, and also found that we usually were better off going in the singles line. Once we did that, most of our waits were in the 5-10 minute range.

I took a wicked fall on our last run of the day. I was going down an intermediate slope pretty fast, and saw ahead of me a rise and then fall in the terrain. I was afraid I was going fast enough that it would put me airborne, and I tried to check my speed a bit before I hit it. Wasn't enough, though -- I did go airborne, and was balanced awkwardly as I was getting into a turn to try to slow down. I knew it was trouble, and sure enough, I landed very badly, lost a ski, and my back and then my head slammed into the snow pretty hard. I haven't been a helmet wearer up to now -- but this is making me think very seriously of getting one. I don't think there has been any major brain damage at least. :) But for a few seconds after hitting my head, I really wasn't sure what the outcome would be.

Running 36:00 [2]4.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Kahana Oct 07
Hadn't run in quite a few days, partly because of the weather Monday (not quite as bad as Sunday when I did run, but I just wasn't mentally up for two wicked days in a row), and partly because I worked at Bristol Tues and Wed. Leaving for Colorado for a week of skiing this evening, and I wanted to at least get a little run in today, since I don't expect to run much out in CO. Although if the weather is cooperative, I might get in a few runs.

Ran on the Hojack trail, from Klem to Lake and back.

Large tree down across the trail just west of Drum Rd; passable, but barely.
Walking 15:00 [3]1.0 mi (14:59 / mi)
shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail
A very vigorous race-walk intensity, going through O'Hare airport. Our flight from Rochester was delayed getting into Chicago due to air traffic control issues in Chicago, so we landed around 9:00, with our flight to Denver scheduled for 9:29, and the gate was in a totally different wing, a LONG walk away. Normally I wouldn't log as a workout walking from gate to gate in an airport, but this was definitely a high-intensity, very stressful, effort!

We did make the flight, and are now in Denver, heading to Breckenridge today.
