Running 1:07:34 [3] 7.59 mi (8:54 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Kahana 10-07 - screw

New Year's Day Freezeroo, at Mendon. I treated this more as a training run than a race, partly because I hadn't been doing a lot of running lately and therefore wasn't in much shape to really race 7.5 miles, and partly because with the very cold temperature and sloppy footing throughout most of the race, I was pretty sure I wasn't going to do a time that I'd be proud of anyway.

Started out the race running with Anne, and I could see that I was pulling her along to a slightly faster pace than she was comfortable with, so I said that I'd go at that pace until around the 5 mile mark, then we'd go at our own paces. But when we got to that point, I decided that I wasn't motivated to push myself for the last 2.5 miles, since a good time just wasn't in the cards for today. And she was still holding the same pace (around 8:55/mile which is pretty good for her). So I said that if she could keep at that pace, I didn't feel any need to take off ahead of her. She kept it up through to the finish.

I suspected that was a PR for her on this course, but when I looked up her time from last year, I saw that she was around 8 seconds faster last year -- kind of disappointing, but the conditions as I recall were much better last year.

I, on the other, was 4 whole minutes slower than last year -- combination of not being in great shape, not being motivated to really race the course this year, and having less than ideal conditions this year.

Note

Got the results of today's race, to compare with the Jan. 1, 2008 race. Relative to other runners, Anne's time WAS quite a bit better this year than a year ago:

2008: 1:07:29 221st out of 328 overall (67th percentile) 6/12 in age group
2009: 1:07:38 169th out of 287 overall (59th percentile) 4/11 in age group

My guess is that the 59th percentile overall finish may be the best that Anne has ever done in any race; I may do some digging to see if that's indeed the case.

In my case, my own 59th percentile finish isn't anything to be real pleased about, but it was in line with my expectations for today.

Paddle tennis 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Tried paddle tennis for the first time, with a lady I've known for decades who's really into just about every racket sport (tennis, squash, ping pong, and now paddle tennis). She gave me a pretty good lesson on some of the basics, at Midtown. It is a pretty tough game, I have to say. I can't say I got a real good workout, but I'm sure I used muscles that I don't normally use, and I expect to be sore tomorrow.
