Note

Injury update, mainly for my own reference. My current self diagnosis is that I have a stress fracture of the femur (description can be found here http://www.physioadvisor.com.au/14670650/femoral-s... ). My symptoms fit this much better than a pulled quadricep which I originally was thinking. One of the key features of this injury is that any pain is "poorly localized" which mine certainly is. Another is that the pain increases with activity and decreases with rest which, again, mine certainly does. If I avoid doing anything like pickleball or running or hilly walks, it is typically barely noticeable. Any activity other than flat walking causes it to be much more noticeable. I need to try biking to see how that affects it.

Today, since I've been good about avoiding much activity since last Monday, it is in the barely noticeable category.

Walking (Dog walk) 43:34 [1] 2.2 mi (19:48 / mi) +56ft 19:20 / mi
shoes: Hoka Conquest

Another dog walk on the HJ trail. Three water stops -- two at the same, fairly shallow, stream in Vosburg Hollow, and the last one (which I can tell the dogs find much more interesting) at their favorite swimming hole near Drumm, where they have to negotiate a steep hill to get down to it, and then of course, climb the hill to get back up to the trail. Homer is still able to do it, although he looks quite tentative doing downhill, but is OK going uphill.

Once again, dogs got hosed down before the walk, and survived OK ...

Hojack Trail. One stop for a dip in a shallow creek, and another for a dip in the dogs' favorite (and deeper) swimming hole.

Walking (Dog walk) 43:42 [1] 2.1 mi (20:47 / mi) +6ft 20:44 / mi
shoes: Hoka Mafate Speed

Mid afternoon dog walk, on a sunny and semi warm day. Hosed the dogs off before the walk and they seemed to survive OK.

Note

It may be because I took one ibuprofen before bed last night, but my hip isn't particularly uncomfortable this morning, which is a little surprising because I was aware of some discomfort while playing pickleball yesterday evening. Usually I don't notice anything while playing, but do the next day.

Note

A discouraging observation this morning is that my hip issue seemed worse than previous days. I played a bit more than an hour of pickleball yesterday, so that may have been the culprit. I also ran a very slow 1.75 miles on Saturday, but Sunday morning it wasn't too bad. Possibly the issues this morning were due to the combination of running plus the pickleball over the weekend, or possibly it means that short slow running isn't too bad, but pickleball, with its more uncontrolled movements, may be worse.

Walking (Dog walk) 29:18 [1] 1.35 mi (21:38 / mi) +1ft 21:38 / mi
shoes: Saucony Excursion TR8 2015

Shorter than intended dog walk. Homer was really dragging. Cheryl noticed he was limping yesterday evening, so it may be related to that. It wasn't particularly hot when we set out this morning, and he wasn't panting noticeably, plus he's gone on walks in much warmer weather with no big issues, so I can't blame the weather. More likely just old age! (He's pushing 14.)
2 PM

Walking 30:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Excursion TR8 2015

At Seabreeze, with Cheryl, our son Greg, and his son Fred. We were there for about 4.5 hours, but logged time and distance is a very rough estimate of the walking we did.

We don't go there very often, but Seabreeze is really an outstanding amusement park, which we're quite lucky to have so close to us (10 minute drive). It was a perfect day -- around 80-82, warm enough for Greg and Fred to enjoy the water park stuff, but not uncomfortably hot for those of us who stayed dry. Despite it being perfect weather and one of the last days before school went back in session, it was not that crowded. When we first got through the gate, for example, we saw that there was essentially zero line for the Jack Rabbit, so how could we resist going on that right away.

Pickleball 45:00 [3]

Three games of pickleball at the Rec Center, partly because I wanted to play and partly to do a double check of any cause-effect between playing pickleball and hip muscle/tendon/whatever issues. Got killed the first game 11-1, but managed to win the next two games.
