Tennis 45:00 [2]

Tennis with Cheryl, at Webster Park. My backhand was marginally better than our last outing; at one time, she hit about 5 shots in a row to my backhand and I managed to return them all. So maybe there's some hope for regaining a minimal level of tennis skill.

Pickleball 15:00 [1]

After playing tennis, we decided to try switching to pickleball, just to see how tough it is to go from one sport to the other. Conclusion -- not that easy at all.

Orienteering 50:00 [0] * 1.0 mi (50:01 / mi)
shoes: Asics Gel Contend 2 April 2015

Cobb's Hill white course, walking with my son Greg and 6-year-old grandson Fred. Greg and I decided that we were going to let Fred do the bulk of the navigation, with us only making suggestions when truly needed. He did OK. I would say he did it 80% on his own, and with maybe about half of the legs, he had no help at all from us. For the last 4 controls, we said that we'd walk about 25 yards behind him and let him do everything, without us even looking at his map. He did OK on two of the controls, but had to be bailed out twice.

He's not athletically inclined in general, showing pretty much no interest in attempts to get him into soccer and tee ball, but he seems quite excited about orienteering. He's already asking us how many White courses he needs to do before he can do Yellow. We said it wasn't really related to the number of White courses, but how confidently and mistake-free he's able to do them.

Tennis 30:00 [2]

I asked Cheryl to play some tennis, partly because I just wanted to play tennis, but also to test out my wrist and my hip area.

We both played OK, considering how seldom we play. We kept the ball in play reasonably well when we were hitting it around. My forehand was actually pretty decent. Backhand much less reliable. We tried some serves; that was a little harder on my wrist, especially when I tried to impart some spin, but wasn't terrible, certainly better than last time I played, a few months ago.

We ended by playing 4 actual games, me winning all 4, but the last one being quite close.

Biking 44:28 [2] 10.55 mi (4:13 / mi) +111ft 4:10 / mi
shoes: Dave Scott Ironman Centurian (

2nd bike outing. Tough to tell if biking is compatible with my upper leg / hip issue or not. It feels fine while biking, but last time I biked, a few days ago, it MAY have been a little worse for wear later. Tough to say for sure, so this is another trial to see if any conclusions can be drawn. In any event, it was a gorgeous day for biking. Upper 70's, sunny, low humidity, not much wind.

Pickleball 1:00:00 [2]

2nd day in a row of playing pickleball. Only did drills tonight though, and I don't think I ran a step. Still had a workout, though. Skills we worked on: serve return, 3rd shot, cross-court dinks, and overheads.

Pickleball 1:00:00 [2]

First pickleball in something like a couple of weeks, to see if my hip/upper leg could tolerate some playing. I made a concerted effort to not do any running, but there were a few times when I got caught up in the excitement of the point and did a couple of running steps here or there. No real issues with my hip during play or now, but the question is how it will feel tomorrow.
